After years of dreaming, 2 cancelled trips, 5+ hours of driving, 6+ hours of paddling & portaging, I finally make it to OSA Lake in Killarney, on my first solo backcountry adventure with my working line German Shepherd Dog, Nova.
This is Part 2

Thanks! I am actually one of those weird people who love the rain, but definitely not keen on the idea of thunder & lightening while out in a canoe, haha! And, yep those mosquitoes love me

Hi Andrea. I forgot to ask... - Which Nova Craft do you have? Is it the Prospector 15/16? - Which material did you get, fiberglass or TuffStuff? - Is it just the standard yoke or the deep dish for portaging? - What is the longest trip you ever done by canoe? - Have you ever done fast moving water/rapids? While Nova is less expensive than a Clipper canoe made in BC here, Nova Craft can certainty climb in price pretty fast with accessories and materials.

It's a Prospector 16 in Aramid Lite with ash trim, standard yoke. Not sure longest trip distance wise, but for time, the longest I've done so far is 3 days. I'd definitely love to do much longer. I've only done very tame rapids in the Saugeen River, Ontario. I think they would mostly be class 1 or maybe 2 in a couple spots. I don't have much rapids experience... yet!

Nice video and cute pup! Very close to the same name as my pup lol. I’m pretty jealous, I still haven’t managed to explore Killarney yet but it’s on the bucket list for sure! Hope to see more videos from you in the future!

Hi Alex! Thank you so much for your comment & subscribing! Love Nova Craft, and the Bob Special looks like an awesome canoe. I don't fish, but it's something I've been thinking about learning. How about you?

@@andreabrand23 Yes i have found the bob to be a good solo canoe and even decent light tandem tripper. Don't know if you have tripped in Algonquin but that is my mecca.Like to fish for brook trout there , some lake trout and even bass and pickeral.

@@alexs3447 I think there's something about the quartzite mountains in Killarney... this most recent trip, I was on Little Trout Lake, and did day trips to Queer Lake, hiked the portage to Tim River & a bit of the one to Little Misty

Oh goodness I miss thunder and lightening. I would canoe in most weather except when high winds. I always brought breathable rain gear. This is the weather you don't want to paddle in. Thunder and rain in itself is nothing to worry about. However, lightening strikes are as lightening is unpredictable and can strike with no thunder or clouds in the sky. Apparently, 20/30 feet is the average range one should not be caught in. The sound of the thunder within that range of contact would be a danger as it could do damage to your hearing. Nevertheless, a typical lightning bolt has tremendous energy and is why it can break bones and melt sand into glass. When it hits a tree, it radiates out in and along the ground surface and can injure or kill you up to 30 feet away. And even further if the ground is wet. You inside the tent was more of a threat as a tent offers no protection from lighting. In a forest situation, one should seek shelter in a low-lying area under a thick growth of small trees or bushes. You are a beautiful looking lady and I sure wouldn't want any harm to come to you. But true enough as you decided, being on the water would not have been a great idea during a storm. I relied on extended forecast weather conditions to anticipate any early changes, topographic maps and waterway alerts/markings such as rapids, what class, or if dams, and water falls. 🤗+♥️-🇨🇦. Can't wait for part 3 sweety. I so miss canoeing.

Thank you for all of the wonderful information! I also don't mind canoeing in rainy weather, as long as it isn't stormy. I've always thought thunder was a good indicator for how far away a storm may be? Although, I did not know that a lightening strike could travel along the ground that far! Thankfully, my tent site was on a lower part of the island, but I wonder if having a rock surface underneath would make any difference in that sort of situation? Perhaps worse, depending upon the material it's made of?! Either way, I truly appreciate your lovely comments! Working away on part 3 as we speak :)

@@andreabrand23 Hello again dearest Andrea. What makes lightening treacherous is wet surfaces as it acts as an electrical conductor no matter where you are standing or what you are standing on. So if the ground is wet and you are standing on the wet ground and lightning strikes while you are within its average range, you become an electrical conductor (causing electrical continuity) and thus, bzzzzzzzz...a hot female toaster. Now that I have frightened you with my shocking tale be told, I look forward to watching the rest of your beautiful travels on OSA. I too did a lot of labored breathing when I was carrying a 90L backpack plus a canoe on my back on portages. I though my legs were going to explode and lungs jump out of my chest...lol. 🤗 ♥️

@@musicbycandlelightmbc3225 Just got back from another Killarney trip, & encountered even more lightening! Was thinking of your comments while safely tucked away in the woods! I haven't tried carrying both pack and canoe at the same time, as I always double carry the portages... but this does allow for a lovely hands free walk back down the trail :)
