Today I'm playing through Pokemon Gold with only a Dunsparce. This strange land-snake deserves more attention, so today we're going to give it to her! It starts out with only the damage dealing move Rage which I don't have good memories of from Generation one...
I do a lot of Pokemon Yellow Challenges as well as occasional Pokemon Red and Blue videos. I expect to expand my content into Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire in the near future! In addition to these challenges I'm planning to start longer form Nuzlocke series in the near future.
Consider supporting me on Patreon! I'm trying to collect the original 151 Patreon's right now, and you could be one of them!

Used a held Berry vs Falkner because I forgot your starter starts with one. RIP, failed the challenge right away. Haha. I decided not to reset just because he was incredibly easy anyways, I didn't even heal before him.

It the main pokemon in Manipless runs and gold and Silver which aren't as active as Crystal. In the any % glitchless Crystal Run they use Totodile until burnt tower, Where they then catch the freed raikou with a manipulated Master Ball won from the lottery. Also in HGSS Cyndaquil is the standard starter but they do the same thing as the crystal run and catch Raikou using it for the rest of the game. HGSS Manipless catches a level 40 magikarp and evolves it.

@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon it's a ridiculously overpowered move, especially in gen 2. It can turn the weakest Pokemon (I'm looking at you, Shuckle) into a gym sweeper. Maybe for the video, try to find out what the weakest, most frail Pokemon is that learns it, and see how far you can get with it. It might end up being a baby Pokemon.

@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon I may be wrong, this js purely based on memory, but I've always been loved and therefore been disappointed in Donphan. It looks so cool to me, and in the anime it's rollout was really impressive to me. So in game, i've always wanted to play it with Rollout. I can't remember which is correct if any, but i've never managed to make it work. Either its Gold/Silver version exclusive, or its not available till Blackthorn, or it can't even learn Rollout. OR it can and I've done it, only for it to not do well at all to the point where I swapped it out anyway. All i know is i want a bulky, rollout-based OHKO Donphan that i can play the whole game through in a solo run and i've never fully realised the dream.

Not “getting stuck,” exactly, but another thing about unclear tile graphics: younger me playing Red and Blue thought that the man blocking the entrance to Cerulean Cave looked like he was wearing a tall black hat. Like the guards at Buckingham Palace. The tile for the entrance to the cave was lined up with that man’s sprite in just the right way that it looked to me like they were a single image.

I know it's an older video, but in case you aren't aware, since it might help with future Johto videos, in Gen 2, the catch mechanics are rather buggy. Consequently, the only status conditions that help with catch rate are sleep and freeze. All other status conditions appear intended to buff catch rate, but the check always fails. Technical explanation: the game loads the enemy status conditions into the 'a' register, then it checks that register for sleep/freeze, then if that check passes, it factors in the condition. If it doesn't, it moves on to check the contents of the 'a' register for any status conditions (in practice, poison/burn/paralysis, since it won't reach this point for sleep/freeze), as this can be done simply by checking if the enemy status is 0, i.e. no status condition, but there's a major issue: the check for sleep or freeze is done using the 'and' opcode, which is sensible given the options available to implement the check as well as the way the data is structured, but the 'and' opcode modifies the contents of the 'a' register. If the enemy pokemon is neither asleep nor frozen, the result will be 0, which sets the zero flag (intended, as the conditional branch to account for the status is triggered when the zero flag is not set, which will happen if the pokemon is asleep or frozen). But after that, they needed to reload the status from memory back into the 'a' register to make the burn/poison/paralysis check work. Since they forgot to do that, when they use 'and a' to check for any status condition (i.e. burn/poison/paralysis since sleep/freeze are already handled), it always returns 0, since the contents of the 'a' register are guaranteed to be 0 at this point, because if the 'a' register did *not* contain zero, the game would have taken the conditional branch to account for sleep/freeze and thus would not have reached the check for burn/poison/paralysis. Therefore, it's literally a one-line-of-assembly bugfix to restore the effect of burn/poison/paralysis on catch rate. There is a comparison instruction that doesn't overwrite 'a', but it may have been more convenient/performant to use 'and' due to it being able to combine the checks for both sleep and freeze in a single instruction for the check and thus only a single conditional jump instruction (otherwise, it would have to check for sleep, then jump if sleep, then check for freeze, then jump if freeze). It would also probably work fine if sleep and freeze were ordered differently, as then you could just check for it being greater than/less than a certain value instead of equal to multiple possible values, but that's not how they're ordered and there might be some other situations in the code where different orderings may have been optimal. (That said, using 'and a' to check for zero makes sense for performance if you don't need to re-use the current contents of 'a' later, as it's 4 cycles compared to 8 for 'cp 0' since on the Gameboy the instructions using a registers' contents as an operand are usually faster than the ones using fixed numbers for reasons I don't know).

Dunsparce is not a snake. It's a BEE. I have taken care of snakes for 12 years. Dunsparce is yellow, has a stinger tail, has stripes, and wings. IT'S A DAMN BEE!!!!

So as someone who works in horticulture re:Ilex, I have two answer's to the pronunciation of it. 1. Botanical Latin has no official pronunciation rules, and as Ilex is the genus for hollies, there is no official pronunciation so there is no official right or wrong pronunciation. 2. The regional pronunciation for the United States is generally Eye-Licks (it is a word I get to hear several times per week)

I think you should occasionally allow yourself a breed move on one of your challenges. For example: I bred ancient power on to my dunsparce a while back. Named it MVP. And eventually went for a set with: - return - glare - curse - ancient power And leftovers. Way over the top. But loads of fun xD since you're aiming to just buff The Sparce into oblivion and then hit hard with return. (and yeah! I tried to make dunsparce work on my theme bug team. ... basically "cheating" because ofcourse it's not actually a bug type) Anyways, really cool choice! Dunsparce often gets ignored or overlooked. And I think people underestimate how much fun it can be if you really try :D so... a like. just for that!

I always loved bugs, despite their general lack of power... Then generation five came along and introduced so many powerhouses. The grand crown of this selection was my beloved fire moth, Volcarona. I have destroyed try-hard teams of legendaries with it. Bugs rule.

Talking about weird tiles. I got Pokemob Blue for Christmas as a kid. I had not seen any gameplay, I just knew I needed a Pokemon game as a kid, it hadn't been out that long either so I hadn't seen friends playing it. I got stuck in the first house. The tile for stairs looked like stairs, so that was obvious but the rug in front of the door to exit the house just did not click with me and I couldn't figure out how to leave the players house. I remember thinking I had a broken copy of the game until I figured it out

25:07 something to remember is that in Gen 2 your moves get a 12.5% damage modifier based on your Gym Badges. Each Gym Badge gives a boost corresponding to the type the Gym is themed after. For instance the Hive Badge badge gives all your bug type attacks a boost. So this would actually give Return a boosted power of 172. Yeah normal types are the kings/queens of Gen 2 when you consider just how early you get the Normal Badge, and how strong Return is :)

I revisit a lot of your older videos lately. It is amazing to see how much this channel, the crew behind the channel and scott himself improved. I know, that you want to revisit these runs as well. Im curious how much you can be done here for example, since Crystal is now the go-to Gen 2 choice instead of gold. For some Pokémon this means other moves in their set. From all the older Gen 2 runs I would love to see Dunsparce, Corsola and Ledian the most.

Lance his Aerodactyl has always changed the rules; it's the true final boss! ..Least it has been for all my gold / heartgold runs, he's my venomoth LOL My own rage aside, Dunsparce is a fun pokemon to do a run with! I finished mine just now, and I learned from my slugma run that speed is.. SLOW! ;) That's why I always borrow the quick-claw and show Dunsparce CAN go fast! All aside, awesome run man, your content is really shaping up so much! I'm willing to say you've become one of my three favorites, so keep that up! :D I don't know if you take suggestions, but I figured to try a Hoppip run myself. It seems a pokemon to really struggle! ;)

Also, that thing you mentioned with rage is actually a strategy some speedrunners use against Miltank. Setup rage against clefairy, hope for a doubleslap, then destroy the cow. That being said, it's kinda unreliable due to metronome compared to fury cutter who also helps against bayleef, but so is every attempt against clefairy.

@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Also, that baton pass would be a reset in almost every run due to stomp flinches. Overall the battle is a nightmare for both casuals and speedrunners; for casuals a cow with 95/105/70 bulk, reliable recovery and attract hax is absurd; meanwhile speedrunners have to praise that RNG from stomp and metronome don't ruin the setup on all three versions of the fight.
