I always feel very lucky regardless of the conditions, bad weather also can make great stories, and in reflection, fond memories. Thanks for the message, you do right by researching this, the first thru-hike is always one you plan, plan, and keep on planning, everyone does the same. But, at the end of your hike, things will all fall into place very easily and you will become, in a way, a very different person. The distant one will always be so special because things will never ever be the same again. Enjoy.

Hey, thanks. I absolutely love my new Atom+ with my setup lighterpack.com/r/exfqwk So wish I had it for the CDT instead of the Arc Haul. I've had 6 days food and there was enough for at least 10? without using the outside pockets. The caveat though is that not only do you need UL gear, but perhaps more importantly, ultra compact! calorifically dense food is super important, follow through the lighterpack links. Atoms can be customised like mine, but unsure wether they currently do the Atom+ in DCF, may be a C-19 thing🤷

Good point about ultra compact - I believe I've dialed in my setup pretty well to where I would like it to be except for the pack itself, but it's not as compact as yours. Maybe a "small" wait penalty to go for a 45 or 50 liter version of Atom + will be worth it in my case to assure I can do longer stretches without resupply..

8 years! 2021 has got to be the year then. I found the lofoten 1 far too small in the foot box so that my bag was always getting wet in rainy weather, perhaps I should have persisted with a better regime at eliminating this, but my heart was elsewhere as it didn’t have sufficient headroom either. I did have the lofoten 2 conversion but never tried it. I liked the plexamid because of the DCF, it’s increased size, and the fact that it had a vestibule which I like to keep wet things in after a rainy day to reduce moisture buildup inside the tent. Depending on how tall you are, the Altaplex could be an alternative, but the duplex is fine if you like a huge space; but that is wasted I think if you’re solo. I only need one trekking pole which i rarely need to hike with, so wouldn’t wish to bring another just for a duplex. TBH I haven’t seen the trekkertent, looks similar to a TarpTent ProTrail Li which i may consider going forward. You’ll find little issue relating to camp site selection because of the footprint of any of these tents. Just do it :-)

Yep, the Lofoten 2 is not a two person tent and I think has the same footbox size as the 1 so yeah with my puffy down bag, it touches the sides as well. But I do love how quick it is to set up and the side entry even though I can't sit up in it! I use two trekking poles and for a long hike (if not using the huts due to the pandemic) I would like the extra space of the duplex I think? I also heard that the plexamid is a bit trickier to set up than the duplex because of the one pole design....although I would grab one if it went on sale!

Yes, it worsened during 2020-21 due to the pandemic, since it became a really popular trend to start hiking and a lot of people with little-to-no experience headed out without any concept of preserving nature as it was found. Hundreds of tents was just left behind along the Kungsleden during the season by people who abandoned their hikes.

Hey, sorry for the lateness, I’ve been camping in the English Lake District. Great that you’re doing this, packrafting sounds an awesome idea, but not for me. The waves across the big lakes would make me nervous, I crossed some which were around 1m waves/swell. As to the daily walking times, I was taking it easy by leaving camp at about 7:30 and had plenty of rest stops and generally got to camp about 5-6pm. Only once did I walk to 7pm. I’ll perhaps update my itinerary with exact details in a few days time. Enjoy your 25kg pack😱

@@_javelin Thanks. Ok good for me. I will probably have a routine like 6am-10pm so around 4-5h more and will "loose time for filming+inflating the packraft+packrafting itself but only 1 way :) If waves are too strong I've 3 options: wait / take the rowboat (6 out of 7 crossings) / packraft around very close to shore. Going South to North: more chance to also have 2 rowboats south when I arrive at a crossing because more people. I just finished measuring the entire route very details with 2 sidetrips (Skierfe + Kebnekaise) and I'm around 508 km. I will of course not take the bus. Ideally paddle the LULE river over 30km which will be fun, walking over the dam. If the weather is super shit (aka windy), I'll walk the road. I had a videochat with a guy last week and he and his group took it easy (hours like yours) and did it in 15-16 days. So I guess my timing is not bad. I think I'll leave with 12kgs of food. around 700 gram per day.

It was actually the CDT I did last year, but same as the PCT in that Giardia is ever present (which I caught in the Wind River Range) I never want to get that again. But the Kungsleden doesn't have problems to my knowledge with water born diseases. So drink happy from the streams.

@@_javelin So the Befree is your preference over the Squeeze if appropriate for the water supplies where you're hiking?

@@turkeyphant There's no great technical difference, on the one hand the squeeze is good IMO for long thru-hikes in that you can cheaply and easily replace the smart water bottle when you're out for a long time as they get skanky. Also if it gets clogged I can backflush it with a coupler. The BeFree for me has a slight edge on shorter hikes in the UK with a much lighter setup as i can also use it with 2x500ml 42mm soft bottles from various others like OMM, Hydrapak etc in my fastpack shoulder pockets. There is so many conflicting opinions on how good each one is, especially regarding flow rate after time. Some disregard the BeFree as you can't backflush, but I only ever use it in "clean" water anyway, so it's not had a problem so far. Also the softer 42mm bottle "may" prove to be more delicate.

Jon I’m sure the company has lofty ethical goals, sawyer has the same and does a huge amount to help developing countries too. On trail all you need is a device that is durable and effective, I notice that they claim to remove 99.99%, sawyer 99.99999%. I haven’t ever seen one, but if I did, I would like to see how durable it is, how easy it clogs and how easy it is to clean out over 3000 miles.
