I’m 36 and have lived in Myrtle since 98. Call me weird, strange, or whatever you like, but I love the smell of the paper mill. There’s even times when we have a steady S-SSW wind and the smell wafts up to garden city and surfside lol I love it.

Having lived in the SC Lowcountry for eight years, these videos really take me back. I still have family and middle/high school friends near Charleston. Love to vacation on the beach at Isle of Palms.

I docked at the Grand Dunnes in North Myrtle Beach, Ruth Cris Steak House. Then on to Georgetown in the morning. Had to spend 7 days there, nasty weather, October 2008. Then on to Charleston, docked on the Mega Dock.

I live in Myrtle Beach and am moving to Fort Pierce next year. Watching your trek along the ICW. That smell you encountered is the Georgetown PaperMill. Acourding to the wind you can smell it for miles.... Enjoy....lol.

Loved hearing you saw Waccamaw! I grew up just south of the swing bridge in Socastee halfway to Bucksport. I have a friend here on Long Island that does transports up and down the seaboard, and we always talk about our shared experiences from Sandy Island to Little River.

# 5"33 I took a 5 ft piece of 3/4 " chain, tied it on a line, then tied it to the anchor line. It shrank the scope considerably. Used that in a few hard storms too.

Thanks for taking the time to make and post these videos. Really cool stuff! I was shopping for boats with the dream of completing the Great Loop and the almighty algorithm led me to you. I’m thinking a 42’ Regal with triple outboards would be the perfect vessel for my trip. Run the 2 outboards and save the middle one for spare in emergency.

Tommy, very much enjoy your videos and look forward to viewing the the rest of your adventures. Hopefully you guys are settled in down there. We have a 2021 bowrider boat with a 200 HP OB. Would love to take the ICW down from NJ to West Palm area one day. Do you think there are enough hotels/motels along the way (or within walking distance) where we could cover maybe 150 miles a day. And approximately what percentage of the trip is no wake which would dictate how many daily miles could be covered? Thanks. Dan
@AdventuresofHappyOurs
@AdventuresofHappyOurs Жыл бұрын
You will need to plan quite a bit to hit a hotel room each night. If bad weather rolls in(frequently) plans will need to change on the fly. I’d say about 20%-30% is no wake or slow speed zones. Would be exciting run on a bow rider. Grab a sleeping bag and sleep on The hook!

Wow autopilot thats really interesting thats its on a boat of that size.i might consider that when we upgrade to a bigger boat, curious what a autopilot cost for a complete installation? Love all the footage and education sending good vibes from NJ
@AdventuresofHappyOurs
@AdventuresofHappyOurs 6 ай бұрын
Thanks Ken. You can get autopilot on just about any vessel nowadays. I’ve seen them on single engine outboards. Costs are upwards of a few thousand to start.

# 2:05 right along about there we saw a sperm whale in the shallows, just sitting there. I did not want to notify the coast guard because they may or may not show. And I knew a bunch of bothersome people would show up harassing that animal. It was about 50 ft long. Thoughts about moby dick got me to wondering that these animals are not known for a good disposition and that I had no place to hide if one of the local asholes got that thing pissed. So we left for the anchorage near the steel mill that stinks up the whole place all the way to Bucksport. Go back to Thorofare creek you may see that 30 ft gator. yes, 30. It surfaced beside us after we anchored in that creek. I did not believe my wife, but I saw it the next day. yes, 30. another one of that size was seen in FL some years later.

Love the series / Playlist man. I'm waiting for the boat market to cool off a bit, but I'm hoping to snag a boat and make the hike from NJ to SWFL next year. Question...how has your experience been having a single-helm flybridge when boating with the family? Do you that they spend most their time up top with you, or down inside?
@AdventuresofHappyOurs
@AdventuresofHappyOurs Жыл бұрын
A bridge with ample comfortable seating up top with the Captain will be inviting to most. I anchor overnight often, but If you don’t need a cabin for that, I suggest open air boats in swfl like a center console or bow rider.

@@AdventuresofHappyOurs my friend who went from a 36' fly to a Leopard 38 sail cat told me the most important question in choosing a boat is determining how you'll most often use it. Seems you're saying the same thing! Appreciate the reply...love the videos

How do you dock and manage the lines solo?
@AdventuresofHappyOurs
@AdventuresofHappyOurs Жыл бұрын
The few times I have docked solo I ask the marina for assistance at the slip. Leaving the dock in the mornings I was able to do solo due to favorable winds and currents. When I anchor, I don’t need to worry about it. Lol

you are smelling Plough Mud (pronounced "Pluff"). the over thousands of years the barrier island accumulated of new sea grass growing upon the old. what results is layer upon layer of coastal mud rich with biological material all in a constant state of decay and renewal. at low tide in particular the pluff mud gives off that smell. there is no swamp gas. the mud and sea grass are essential to the unique ecosystem of the coastline and help absorb the impact of massive hurricanes that pass through there.
