Basic knife fighting angles using the Heaven grip. To add complexity to the drill, start each angle with a thrust and end with a slash on the same plane. Hope you enjoy and get a lot of practice in! Please support the humble martial arts channels, by liking, commenting, sharing & subscribing! Thank you, as always!

Question: what is the purpose of placing slapping the left hand on the right bicep? Thanks!
@SakanLam
@SakanLam 7 жыл бұрын
It develops the skill of opening & closing, 'abierta & serrata'. First is the benefit of using the arm weight for counter balance, the second is the purpose of scissoring the opponent's attack as a counter. In other words, passing or checking the opponent's hand and slashing the arm. Great question, thanks!

Sam B The knife is an aluminum bowie trainer from Smoking Sticks Arnis. Honestly, I'm in no position to give you advice on what live blade to carry and use, because I don't use them myself. I practice these drills for coordination and to keep the art and heritage alive. However, I'm sure a reliable folding knife would be sufficient enough. Thanks for commenting!

Good point. A proper instructor is invaluable to your training. If one is not available, it's best to practice drills like these to develop coordination and muscle memory first. Once the instructor appears, then you'll be ready to advance!

@@SakanLam Oh. a barong tagalog is an 17-18th century traditional filipino clothing. According to some, the spaniards wanted to make the barong tagalog thin so that filipinos cant hide their weapons especially knives. And as for others the barong tagalog was influenced by spanish polo clothing and the filipinos improvised it. Im just curious wether you are wearingbone or not since it does look similar. I also dont know about thai shirt styles but I tgink it looks awesome.

And I am only relying on good eskrima training sites like yours and otgers to give me some insights about our culture. Sadly eskrima is only taught outside and within tge military and law inforcements, and our PE teachers are only teaching us the points and blocks-theres no emphasis on the martial art itself.

@@SakanLam Mabuhay Guro. I am an old man now. I am still wstudying FMA almost forty years. I was exposed to impact hitting first back in 1989 via a Khemetic Art called Kupigana Ngumi. My teaching was further enhanced when Supremo Balthazar Z. Sayoc taught me Pentjak Silat. Your explanation of impact striking in conjunction with striking greatly added to my comprehension. Not many FMA stylists use impact empty hand technique. Only when they Gunting. I was shown to use impact on every movement possible, even ricocheting off of the impact to follow into a trap or strike. You helped enhance my knowledge base. I'll be 70 in six years. I am the present. You Guro Lam, are the future. You must keep spreading the art. It will stay alive. Supremo Sayoc once told me privately, "KALI is a life within a life. Kevin, you must dedicate yourself to it" I salute you Guro. Mabuhay

@@SakanLam Here's one you'll like. Back in 1998, Tuhon Christopher C. Sayoc who founded Sayoc Knife Fighting, 'All Blade, All The Time' told me I should begin calling myself a Tuhon...just because of my knowledge base! (Tuhon has a similar rendering in Indonesian called Tuan. Tuhon/Tuan means god.) I responded 'Tuhon, the only thing I'm a master of is the Number 2 meal at Wendy's... He bursts out laughing and says "Yeah. It's the Number 3 for me these days!" Man, those were good times. As your Manong, or Uncle, you have demonstrated more than enough knowledge and technique to call yourself such. Guess how I became a Manong?......everybody else died and I was one of the guys left!. I'm old little brother. Soon Guro Lam will become a Tuhon. You are worthy. The old timers would place their right hand on your head and wait to sense something. If the vibe is bad, they wouldn't teach you. This was old old school. Only people like me still do such. Thanks Sakan Guro. I shall always remember how, not Dan, not Vunak, not Bruce Lee, but Guro Sakan Lam helped me really fine tune my empty hand impacts. The Sayoc's always taught that 'we can learn something from everyone. Much Respect. Mabuhay
