Your “play the melody first to get ready” is incredible for any instrument. Obviously it’s great for improv, but I’m realizing it’s just as great when you’re writing a solo for an original song. Jump up 2 octaves and see how the melody feels, and then find something that feels like you’re adding to the conversation. I’m gonna add this to my guitar tool box. Thank you

Most of the feedback I got was that you learn through experience and just have to try until you figure it out. That feedback never helped me, but watching your videos makes me love the idea of playing sax again and explains your process in a way that clicks in my brain. I know your videos are reaching and inspiring developing musicians and it makes me so happy thinking about how many people you are helping 💜

Do it. I made that change back when I played and I loved it. Just note that it's Bb. So where you'd play concert Bb scale starting on G fingering, for tenor, it's played like starting on C fingering from alto. That's how I figured it out (from nobody telling me first 🤣) You should be able to navigate from there. Then you'll be able to play soprano with ease too (also Bb).

Hey that was cool man :) I like the way you listen to your own play while playing at the same time. Master Yoda would say: "Hm. This young fellow - awesome - his ear must be... may the force stay with him." 👍♥️🎷

I love your videos because they accurately capture what it's like to be a musician who has years of experience. A lot of the time beginners start off with a pretty specific idea of what they want, and then get jaded at some point when they reach a level where they can play pretty much whatever they want but are playing things they wouldn't have played as a beginner. I found this, I wanted to play only progressive rock and jazz fusion, so I was pretty bummed playing disco and pop. In reality, at that point you have to kind of accept the subjectivity of music, and start having fun with it all and learn lessons from everything you play. Videos like this capture that sort of loose grip you often have on the music you're playing, and the thought process going behind jamming that a lot of people who don't necessarily have experience just assume is talent, or "feeling the music" (which obviously happens when you're in a flow state, but it's pretty rare when you play day-in-day-out).

honestly it couldn't be better without you completely ripping everyone off lmao. But that just go to show how flexible and able you must be to fit in in any situation you get caught on. Great stuff!

Thank you for explaining your mindset. It’s really helpful just to musicians in general not just saxophone players. I play guitar and I struggle with improvising solos. Explaining the mindset of improvisation is extremely helpful .

I’d have had words with the vocalist after! Perhaps it’s expected you can just improv on the fly like that. But if not it could trash the song. Surprises like this when playing are not fun.

I disagree, they often lead to the most musical moments. This kind of playing is expected for horn players
