She said, "Daddy, that guy is so cool!" and insisted that we watch about 2 more of your videos. She is a big fan of Corporals Corner and we are heavily considering taking Intro to Survival in the Spring at the Pathfinder School. Awesome content and keep doing what you do man. Started doing things like this when I was a little girl and my family bought a 97 acre farm in central Wisconsin. My father was a tyrant when we were at home in Chicago but for some reason when we were at the farm I was given free rein to do anything I wanted as long as I took my hunting knife and the whistle we all carried that could be heard almost anywhere on the acreage. I could disappear for a couple days on my own anytime I wanted as long as I let them know I was leaving. As my daughters would say, I grew up back when the dinosaurs roamed the Earth so we had no social media at the time. Back then, I used to read the Ernest Thompson Seton books about life in the wild whilst sitting 6 stories up wedged in the top of the nearest spruce or fir tree I could climb and it's extraordinary how much I learned from them. I'd pick the farmer neighbor's brains whilst helping them with the milking with at least 2000 questions every morning before breakfast. Later in life, I read all the Foxfire books about the old ways of doing things in Appalachia. Then the Clan of the Cave Bears, the Gear anthropological stories and Diana Gabledon's Outlander books which gave me even more information because although they were fiction they were extraordinarily well researched on how to use primitive resources. I hope never to have to use the burial processes of some of the Southeastern tribes I learned but I know how it was done. 💀 Have lived in the Pacific Northwest forest for the last 47 years & wouldn't have it any other way. I'm almost 67 but can work and move around like I'm 27. The only time I'm truly happy and at peace is when I'm alone away from everyone surrounded by trees, mountains, and salt water. It's also comforting to live in an area with naturally occurring things to make snug shelters around without tools and where natural resources and food are all around me. P.S If anyone is hungry and finds themselves near a lake with blue gills, they are the dumbest fish on Earth and will bite almost anything. Just watch out for the bones and you'll need at least 25 of them to satiate your hunger.

It takes real dedication to get out in 10° weather with it snowing and DIG into the frozen ground, and spend the night in freezing weather, just to make your videos for your legion's to watch. Thanks for all that you do.

I am 75 yrs. old and have used the overturned tree roots for shelter for most of my adult life. Never had one to rise up on me! Also shaving off the face of the roots as you did will get get rid of most creepy crawlers that might be surviving the winter in the crevices. Much better than a shallow rock cave. Let the heat and smoke start warming up the rock and every creepy crawler that's there will come out all night long! Love the way you created the inside fire pit. I never get to old to learn! The way you created the different levels to avoid a water problem was very well shown and should be used if rain is forecast. For long term usage, it is a must. Needless to say I loved the video and look forward to many more!

Your dig reminded me of a great foxhole my battle buddy and I dug in similar clay soil. It was an OP with a commanding view over a road intersection. It had two seats cut out, a table between, a cut out for our comms, a cut out for ammo boxes, extra deep grenade sumps, and really well camouflaged overhead cover of logs and living shrubs. We just got creative and had fun with it. That clay fireplace idea would have been fantastic had we been allowed, hehe.

At first sight of the thumbnail image I knew that I was seeing something special, something very special indeed! You recognised the benefits of the uprooted tree base and the hollowed out earth for the natural shelter potential that they had, whereas others would've passed by without noticing! Your simple, basic hand tools and your skills and carried gear, knowledge and determination enabled you to dig out, smooth out and fit out the best, most sheltered, heated base camp that I have ever seen! This not only enables you to survive, but to positively thrive! The pride, satisfaction, warmth and comfort at having such a well considered and well constructed base camp would boost one's morale by a considerable order of magnitude! This is living WITH nature rather than working against it, letting nature help you, and your skills and experience enable you to recognise and respect what's already there in nature, just waiting to be found and appreciated. You can dry clothing, cook, brew up, rest, recover and recuperate, and enjoy time in your unique shelter, rather than just struggling to get by! To say that what you've done is inspiring is a huge understatement, what you've shown your extremely fortunate viewers is that they can work with nature and create a shelter beyond their wildest expectations! A good many viewers wouldn't want to leave such a perfect shelter and would prefer to make it their base camp! Thank you for teaching, inspiring and showing your viewers what may be achieved with the right mindset and their carry tools and gear, and hard work, it is truly appreciated!

Talk about memories, when I was a kid my buddies and me built an underground fort very similar to that. Not only did we have the exact same type of fireplace, but we even dug most of it with a 'Nam era E Tool like that, LOL. We did eventually scrounge up some scrap tin for a roof. With the fireplace blazing in the winter it could be -20 outside with the wind howling and still nice and toasty inside. Little did our folks know we heated the thing that way for 2 winters before some Karen seen smoke one day and called the cops. That was the end of our awesome hangout.

Im 70 years old and have been doing primitive camps for over 50 of those years. Never too old to learn. The day you dont learn something new you might as well just pack it in and say goodbye. Love your videos. Always glean a nugget or two. Thank you so much!

Seriously, the shelters with the integrated fireplace/chimney are my favorites. The last one, the teepee style, leaning against the tree, with the door, was also amazing!

Dude, been watching you for almost a year and that might be the most OUTSTANDING shelter build ever. I know people will say it's not practical for a quick shelter, but who cares - it was just awesome. 4 walls and a roof with a wood heater in a day?!? Nice work - definitely inspiring!

Damn dude, worked your butt off digging that fox hole in the cold. Sure glad it paid off in the end. The fireplace is outstanding AF and no wind in there, yeah, good to go. Water seepage I can see being a problem given the substrate. Corporal style chili, yummy. Nicely done CPL. K, see ya next time.

This shelter build is the very definition of badass. The very first episode of Dual Survivor featuring Dave C. and Cody L. had a similar circumstance building a shelter against a stump of a fallen over tree in the dead of winter. But you took it one step further . . .

You are THEE master of shelters out of natural materials . If a tree falls in the woods and nobody else is around to see it , you could build a three bedroom townhouse out of it .

As a kid, we built several of this style shelter with the rocket stove. We would ld use scrap lumber for the sides and roof then cover with dirt. Kind of like a split level bunker. It's funny that the skills I developed as a child I use in the Marine Corps.
