I did this on my Solo some time ago. I used pan head bolts about the same diameter as the ones he used and used washers and vinyl locking nuts. I had to drill out the tapping holes on the backing plate to do that. It takes some guts to start cutting up you Solo. This video does a good job of showing how to do this. I had to do it with out this. I did have some help from someone who already had done it though. One side note is do not freak out when the hatch does not sit flush before screwing it down. It will be OK. Excellent video

Nice job good video two suggestions one use your drill bit to drill out The notches for the latches makes a nicer job a little easier second put blue painters tape on the bottom of your jigsaw that way you won't scratch the whole great video thank you

I am curious as to how the hatch sits after a while. Does it warp after a while? I am concerned that the curve of the skiff will tend to separate the hatch from the boat surface since its only held in place by screw without nuys and washers on the inside

Hey Hector, The backing plate/gasket acts like a large washer sandwiching the the deck between the hatch and square backing plate see 11:45

@@LiquidSurfandSailcom thanks for the reply! The reason I asked is that I installed a hobie round 6 inch hatch, 'too dammed small' and I can see that just beyond the hatch the boat surface dips. I think I will end up with the bigger hatch eventually. Again, thanks for the info!

You said silicon but you didn't do silicon

Don’t you put bedding compound between the joints?
@LiquidSurfandSailcom5 жыл бұрын
We use Silicone or closed cell foam gasket but unless you plan to use you Skiff as a submarine it's not really needed as the amount of water needed to run over that hatch to cause any significant leakage is massive.

Would like to know what brand and size of the hatch and where it could be purchased? Also maybe the cost?

@@LiquidSurfandSailcom I found the hatch on amazon but where do you get the bucket that goes inside the hatch?

no cost ? that Hobie hatch cost some big bucks look online found one for about 40$ used silicone and nut and screws. Then just find a 5$ container to fit inside hatch way cheaper. anything Hobie is way over priced, try to look at more diy stuff.
