Solo Winter Cold Camp - Ramona Lake, Western Uplands Trail, Algonquin Park
myselfreliance.com/winter-back...
For two days last week, I took some time alone to backpack from the trailhead of the Western Uplands Backpacking Trail at the Oxtongue River Picnic Ground to Ramona Lake and back. The hike north from the parking lot was made easier by a party of hot tent winter campers that broke trail to Guskewau Lake, but soft deep powder beyond that point to Ramona Lake required the use of snowshoes. The temperature was -24C when I set out and dropped to -29C that night, but it proved to be a comfortable temperature for hiking and for sleeping in my -30C sleeping bag and Outdoor Research bivy.

The only trail I haven’t been on. We used to camp Algonquin when the kids were babies.

Another great video, Shawn. I love winter camping and get a thrill out of traveling the same lakes and portages on snowshoes that I’ve paddled on previously. I’ve been to that part of Algonquin you were in but never in Winter. Thanks for sharing the beauty. Now I need to go back there in the snow! Thank you for explaining your diet, calorie count and clothing. I also tend to overheat easily - weird for a woman with a slight build. Great to hear your suggestions for ditching some of the layers. I’m often doing that when others with are shivering and getting blue lips. Lots of good stuff in that video!

Listened to your comment of your legs overheating due to long john. What I have found for winter hiking that works very good for me. I have uninsulated Gortex wind pants with nylon liner, they have full length side zips, very easy to control how much heat you retain by running zips up or down or anywhere in between. This works good for me depending on temperature using light weight, or midweight long johns, or even 2 layers of long johns

Those trees the bears are in are American Beech, they are eating the Beech nuts ;) I absolutely love the way claw marks scar into the smooth bark. Whenever I find myself in a grove full of clawed up Beech I get an eerie feeling like I'm not alone. - Love it!

I've seen quite a bit of Algonquin Park by watching Kevin Callan's videos and others. Being from Minnesota, this reminds me of being "up north" in the Boundary Waters. Such beautiful land. Thank you for taking the video!

A lot of the time I wear cold weather riding gear. They most of the time they have great stuff for cold weather. Check them out it may be something that will work for you. Most of the time out here in the Yosemite area it only gets down to around to the low teens. Once in a while down to 5 or 6 degrees. One time it got down to 12 below now that was cold.
