The Solomon Island prehensile-tailed skink or monkey-tailed skink (Corucia zebrata) is one of the coolest lizards on the planet. They are big, adorable, and interesting, but is it the right pet reptile for you?

This was my first ever reptile back in 1997. I saw her at a pet shop and it was love at first sight. It cost every penny I had to get her and an enclosure/bulbs etc but I had 17 amazing years with her and she was amazing. When she saw me she’d run (not fast but as peppy as she could be lol) and climb up my leg. She loved sitting on my head wrapped up in my hair while I did my homework or did errands around the house.

I got a good chuckle from the outtakes on this one. They sure can be a bit snippy, especially when they are young. I've always read getting bit by an adult feels like getting your hand slammed in a car door. I'm hoping to avoid that with our pair...lol. 🦎👍

Heads up about pathos plants. They contain calcium oxalate crystals which act as hypodermic needles when the plant is bit into. Clearly this isn’t an issue for the lizard but if you own a curious cat that might try biting into the plant you should avoid Pothos. It won’t kill your cat but it will make there tounge swell up like a balloon and make for a very few painful days for your kitty.

Worked with one of these guys, she wasn’t so nice either and she had to be misted daily because she didn’t drink from her water bowl. I’ll be getting to work with her this summer at the zoo I interned at again! ❤️ I heard they have tight knit social groups out in the wild and don’t easily let new skinks into their group 🤭 But their faces? Unbelievably adorable.

The fact that you don't have to feed one live food is HUGE. I used to have one. Never got bit. Sometimes when you would wake him up, you could tell the skink might bite. Usually once the skink was up and about, they would not bite. They will climb on you and the claws can be a little long. The facial expression of this skink is great, like a little dinosaur.

The next reptile I get asides from my ball python I got recently is a prehensile tail skink- saving up for it 'cause yeaaaaahhhh- they're definitely pricey- and I know the sized enclosure I would want to make for it as it's final enclosure- and want to be living somewhere else first. I know I don't want to be here long term and that would be a pain to move! I've only seen one at a pet store a friend managed... hung out with him allllll day, but he was way outside my price range then. Lucked out and he was pretty friendly. I really do want one at some point...
