Island of Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands - the village of Water Pump in the island of Guadalcanal. Here's a very rare tour of a Melanesian village, outside the city of Honiara (the capital of the island of Guadalcanal) in the Solomon Islands. Water Pump is a community in Honiara, Solomon Islands located about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) West from the center of the city.
The name of the village is Water Pump, see more here:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_Pump_(Honiara). Solomon Islands is a sovereign country consisting of six major islands and over 900 smaller islands in Oceania lying to the east of Papua New Guinea and northwest of Vanuatu and covering a land area of 28,400 square kilometres (11,000 sq mi). The country's capital, Honiara, is located on the island of Guadalcanal.

(Cont;d) Another question, Vic. I've stopped the video again at 2:27, after studying the style of architecture where the home is placed on stilts. My question, Vic, is, is there some at least rudimentary understanding of mathematics? After all, I notice some of the living structures are built on slopes, meaning someone would have to make adjustments in measurements while constructing the home. I hope I make myself clear.
@VicStefanu
@VicStefanu 9 жыл бұрын
Jay Young Yes you do and there is a very good understanding of mathematics (architectural rules) when building these structures. After many thousands of years, they know very well how to build efficient huts that will withstand the wind and the heavy rains. Even is they do not understand the mathematical rules that must be applied (in a 'formula' type, that is) they do apply the same rules (unknowingly) gained from experience, does this make sense?
@ccaammiinniiito2
@ccaammiinniiito2 9 жыл бұрын
Vic Stefanu Indeed it does make sense. And you've addressed the issue to the letter. Yes, over the years they've "internalized" a mathematics that allows their structures to deal with all manner of environment. Thank you.
@VicStefanu

Jay Young One example that comes to mind are the remarkable buildings of Peru and especially Machu Pichu. They have been built in such a way so that they can withstand very strong earthquakes (and they have managed to do so over the centuries), something that today (the calculations required for the architecture) will take a sophisticated computer to accomplish.

Vic Stefanu And that's not to mention the exceedingly thin air at such a level! So, yes, some of the true marvels of the world are not in First World countries, are they? All humankind are interesting, in their own way.

Vic, just for your info I have been working on the Wikipedia page for Honiara (particularly the suburbs at the bottom of the page) Anyway Water Pump is one such page and for your info I have added your link to this page. Feel free to edit with your learned knowledge please. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_Pump_(Honiara)

phenss Hi and thank you for your message. Thank you for adding the reference to my video, I am glad and thankful that you did so. I was visiting the botanical gardens that day and I ended up at the village on top of the hill; I asked if I could videotape the village and I was allowed to do so, it was a great experience. There are many more videos coming up from the area of Honiara, did you see the one from Tetere Beach (the cemetery of the US amphibian tanks)?

Vic, I stopped the video which promises to be most didactic at 1:41 to ask you this question. Are hygienic practices common among all humankind, however "primitive"? And two, I ask you is some measure of modesty also common among all humankind, again however "primitive"? For example, I've noticed in tribesmen the tendency to cover the lower extremities? Now to continue watching your video!
@VicStefanu
@VicStefanu 9 жыл бұрын
Jay Young Hi Jay, the customs vary greatly. Some people have toilets inside the huts and some have separate outhouses, you see one in the video here. In Yap (Micronesia) the old ladies would go to the supermarket and walk around topless.. I have seen everything and all varieties, this is a very interesting subject to discuss..
@ccaammiinniiito2
@ccaammiinniiito2 9 жыл бұрын
Vic Stefanu Topless seems, unless I am deluded, to be a Christian/Islamic/Judeo prohibition. Probably not in most other civilizations. However, the covering of the lower extremities out of modesty or whatever seems universal.

Solomon Islanders are very shy people but I'm pretty sure if you politely ask them to have a look in one of those huts they will let you.
