What did you just teach? so basically the method is we're supposed to just eye whats larger, the hydrophilic vs the hydrophobic region? and whatever region is "larger" determines if its polar or not? Is that the method?

here's a toughy... most to least soluble in water: 1,2 dichlorobenzene, 1,4 dichlorobenzene, benzene, and n-octodecande

How do covalent compounds dissolve in non polar solvents? Don't gimme the "like dissolves like". I want to know what actually happens

Yeah, this. Just using a very basic "just remember this to pass the test" concept isn't real teaching.

I think the shape of Na and Cl should be interchanged. Because halogens have smaller atomic size than alkalis.

sodium actually loses its 1 electron in the outter shell, therefore losing that shell, so it becomes signficantly smaller, in contrast to chlorine who completes its shell with that electron.

When you say hydrocarbon, do you mean carbonic acid or all compounds that contain hydrogen and carbon? Such as alkanes, alkenes and alkynes? (asking because I learn chemistry in another language)

Doesnt Benzoic acid dissolve in water? since it has 2 polar atoms and less than 10 nonpolar Carbon atoms?

I have a question: if a compound has both a hydrophillic part and hydrophobic part like, how can we know if the compound is water soluble or not?

Hi. Good question. Those compounds are amphiphilic. fat molecules are usually amphiphilic or both (polar and non polar). These compounds pack tightly together in polar environments so the non-polar ends are close together and their polar ends exposed outward in polar environments. The reverse would happen if in non-polar environments!

Why polysaccharides are not soluble in water if sucrose, an oligosaccaride is soluble in water? Both have similar OH groups.

i think that is because polysaccharides are too big to dissolve they form 'colloids'and also due to polymeric character , sucrose is small enough to dissolve

He says 24 seconds in “you don’t usually describe ionic compounds as been polar” but every other source says you do?, can anyone clarify what he means?
