CASE NOTES
================
Donnie Messier
Missing Since: October 5th, 2006
Missing From: Waitsfield, Vermont
Sex: Male Height: Unknown Weight: Unknown
Race: White
Age: 34 years old
Case Description:
Messier was last seen at a party in Waitsfield, Vermont at 2:00 a.m. on October 15, 2006. He left the gathering driving his red 1997 Ford F-150 dual cab pickup truck and has never been heard from again.
The vehicle has the Vermont license plate number BGG890, a dual exhaust, a moon visor, a black tonneau cover, and the NASCAR numbers 27, 07 and 08 displayed in the rear window. A photograph of it is posted with this case summary. Since his disappearance, Messier's bank accounts, credit cards and cellular phone have been inactive.
Messier was reported missing on October 18, three days after he was last seen, after he missed two days of work at Green Mountain Coffee Roasters without calling in. His family described him as a hard worker and a "homeboy" who rarely traveled anywhere. The only out-of-state trip he had ever taken was in the fifth grade, when his father's work briefly took the family to Florida.

So frustrating that a lot of police departments won’t even let awp help or even talk about things together and see how it should be done. No reason that truck shoulda been pulled out upside down

Out of that patch of bank from which they could have gotten an angle on it, they had to pull it THROUGH the ONE TREE in that stretch. Lots of space on either side of the tree, and a skinny young one at that, and they pull the truck up through it.

Not sure what state your from but I am from Vermont. The police are really good about coming fast when called. And they usually let you off on a ticket. But not all of the Middlesex Barracks are bright or care. I do know 2 personally but they are the exception & didn’t work on this case. I knew Donnie (not well but I did email AWP about his case). Anyways, I think the Vermont State Police dropped the ball from the beginning. There was some reason why they pulled it the way they did (an issue with the rotator & then having to get a tow truck instead). The tow guy got injured. He’s good from what I last heard. They also had VSP dive team search that part of the river from what I heard. They probably didn’t want to look bad & that’s why they took over & didn’t want help. I personally don’t think they did enough or even cared after a few months. His family are great people & Im glad they kept fighting to find him. I hope they do. This case has bothered me from the beginning. I just started the video & paused it to comment. So I don’t know yet what this video shows.

Let me get this straight: Jared ensured LE knew the truck must be kept level as it came out and that AWP could do that for them. LE took a pass on *free help from the most experienced recovery team in the world,* did the second-worst possible thing, then the worst possible thing, topping it off by using a tree to scrub out anything left. We watched with our mouths hanging open, expecting them to bypass the flatbed altogether at that point and just drag the truck down the highway behind the rotator like honeymoon cans. Kudos to AWP and Downunder Dan Diving, who did a beautiful job. *Sincere condolences* to the family. Massive side eye to LE.

This isn't about who's man part is bigger, this was about bringing home a young man to his family, to give them closure, peace of mind, and to show their Final Act of Love by laying Him to Rest! Seeing that truck come out upside down broke my heart. At that point, LE should’ve scrapped looking inside of the vehicle altogether. Watching them not even bother to cut that tree which scraped whatever evidence was inside infuriated me. They did a disservice to the family. I’m angry that Donnie’s family, including his parents, had to watch them disgrace the last peace of hope that they had to lay their son to rest. There was no regard for that. Wrecker position was wrong, the divers didn't stop the pull when the vehicle started to tip, a medium duty wrecker was used which was entirely under powered for this kind of recovery. I'm honestly speechless as to why people who have a certificate think themselves more qualified than those with experience. I know -- the way they basically just dragged that truck upside-down (spilling out whatever's left inside) RIGHT...THROUGH...A...TREE, at the end, there. It took AWP to find it after all these years...and then it gets delayed again and mistreated at the very, very end by those who couldn't find it in the first place. That's really bad -- and sad. They just had to involve themselves SOMEWHERE in the recovery -- and totally messed it up, in the process.

I'm a licensed SCUBA diver and I was utterly appalled to watch how the ego's of law enforcement completely fucked up the recovery. AWP are the world class recovery experts, second to none... and they were relegated to standing 100 feet away... and could only watch it all fall apart. I was utterly devastated to see the truck come up, upside down... that's why the remains were lost. AWP would have brought it up as a nice tight secure bundle, right way up.

What a complete FUBAR Of what would've been a much smoother, and respectful, and a 1000% better job of preserving any remains of Donnie to bring a more complete Closure to His Family, and Friends. The Only Good that could possibly come This From a LE perspective, would Be To Make a "How Not" to remove a submerged vehicle from The Water Training Video and Then move onto Team AWP Demonstrating The way That They have done The Recovery. Because The Vermont State Police should be,throughly ashamed of the outcome of this particular incident and especially after Milking The Likely Overtime Cow and The Totally desecration of Their supposed Crime Scene . Team AWP Told Them what type of Recovery Vehicle they were going to need, but instead They show up with their truck that probably has the license plate reader that they drive around apartment complex and Walmart parking lots in search of vehicles to Repossess . So how many Hours were wasted on that. And As For The AWP Team I,can only imagine what Your True Feelings are Compared to What You really Feel, and say on camera and Maintaining your professional Composure. You need another Channel, a place where You can vent your true inner Feelings, which I, imagine that you do inside The Motor home, in your own post Recovery debriefing. Keep up your Spirits, and doing The Great work that You do. There Now I, feel better now that I've Vented a bit. And if you're ever near Globe Arizona I,would Love to see you do some scanning on Roosevelt Lake and see how many vehicles you would find in That Body of Water. Another Job well done, and boy was I,shocked when Carson did The Original dive and I, saw The Color Red appear. Jared told you to cut get longer hose, set up propely on shore to sift through the scrreening for remains and cut those 2 trees down to extract the vehicle. The news crew who reported on this absolutely gave their viewers false informarion because the incompetent police team did NOT find this man's watery grave AWP found him at the request of the family to intervene and find him and AWP did exactly that. This was infuriating to watch and heartbreaking to learn the family still has to conduct further searches on their own for the remains of their family member. Unbelievable that the police didn't bother to ask AWP for advice about how to pull the vehicle out correctly. They should be ashamed. I hope other law enforcement agencies see this and understand that when you have access to experts who have done this kind of thing dozens of times, you don't try to muddle through a recovery like this without help. @@asya9493 What I would suggest is the AWP team get some type on Federal Govt. Licensing as a contract underwater forensics recovery team. The reason many LE agencies are reluctant to use them, is if the case ever went to court as a homicide, that would open the door for the defense to question why LE let a bunch of untrained civilians make the recovery instead of the "Licensed Professionals"? Even though they have vastly more experience and expertise, than the "Professional" LE team, AWP is still considered armature private citizens and would be a big risk of tainting a homicide trial. Even if they didn't taint the recovery, that would still be a major hurdle for the prosecution to explain to a jury. They need some type of Federal or National Accreditation in underwater forensics recovery team and many more police agencies would use them.

@@stevengibson2251 It's so sad the state of politics and governmental control we have been willing to accept over the years, as we become even more technically advanced. Growing up, I remember how many technical jobs were done on an apprentice basis, but very little licensure. Then as I got older I saw how litigious and antagonistic a segment of society became. People talking about corporate wrongdoing, and narrowing it down to some base notion without considering each individual circumstance, with the action groups and lobbyists seeing dollars signs in the lawsuits, and government agencies seeing a way to get their hands in the cookie jar. Now statewide and nationally there is a wide swath of regulations that have come year after year, decade after decade... Along with it, these government agencies at local, county, state, and federal levels have all required some sort of form of licensure. These aren't overseen by actual professionals who ensure that those licensed are quality. They control a political dynamic for the most part. These guys getting a license for what they do don't make them BETTER, nor does the licenses that these government agencies' employees have make them more professional. You see it time and time again. I'm self employed and I have to get a business license in the city I run my business as well as a Health Dept license... I don't have to have more TRAINING to get those... it doesn't make me a better business owner... and the Health Dept doesn't provide me with anything or do anything to make my business more "healthy" to the public. I still run my business the same way I would without those licenses. NOTHING CHANGES! The only thing that has happened is that the agencies, over the years, have started using it as a political weapon they can wield at you if you don't follow their political dogma. Besides that, the agencies who provide the licenses just have a steady stream of income that they use for internal shit, and not for actually DOING anything of importance.... as in... the law enforcement that was always in charge of this case let it sit for decades, and NEVER made any attempt to do what AWP does, leaving the family to wonder WTF happened to their loved ones. They are the sole people licensed, hired, and tasked to DO these jobs... not AWP... and they're getting paid to ACHIEVE these goals. Their licenses haven't made them more successful, more competent, more proactive... I don't get why so many average Americans now believe somehow a license is the end all and be all and somehow instills competence... all it does is bail out the LITIGIOUS nature this nation has developed into... and hamstring real progress. Everything AWP does shows that at every turn... AWP has a lot of PROFESSIONAL detractors on this end regarding "licensure"... Again. It's sad.

They can "practice" on dumped insurance fraud cases or vandalism. I'm not surprised they didn't find any remains considering they likely dumped them all in the river. It was careless, it was disgusting and it was unnecessary when ya'll had a plan in place to recover the vehicle as intact as possible to preserve it. They tried to make it seem like the first priority was maintaining the integrity of the "crime scene" and then extracting the vehicle... THE VEHICLE IS THE CRIME SCENE. And they flipped it, dumped it, dragged it and yanked it through a damn tree. They didn't give a crap about the integrity of the scene, they were sour you solved a 16 year cold case in days and they didn't want you taking any more credit so they thought their dive team could do just as good of a job... when really the whole thing was a circus once it got in their hands.
