In this episode of Adventures with Purpose, we are truly humbled in the experience of heading to Warrenton Missouri to lead the recovery efforts of Nathan Ashby.
---------------------
The good news...
We found and recovered Nathan when we found his truck 25' underwater in the Missouri River.
Crazy... RIGHT?
----------------------
#scubadiving
#foundtruck
#missingperson
----------------------
So how did his truck end up in the river?
At this time, it is an open investigation and the family may never have answers.
Thankfully, Nathan has been recovered and his family can now begin the healing process knowing he is now home.
Our role was made possible because our viewers along with Nathan's family and friends reached out to us after seeing us on KZfaq and Facebook, making us aware of a Missing Person story from Dateline NBC.
We are humbled and thankful for this opportunity and experience to bring closure for his family.
The last thing we wanted to do was find a truck in the river with Nathan inside.
What's our next dangerous underwater mission going to be?
Who knows, maybe we'll be coming to a community near you to solve a cold case from your river as well.

It seems like the most dangerous part is dealing with the lines. They are getting tangled up and if you are ever tangled in them it’s all over. I hope that something is figured out to make dealing with the lines safer. I also hope that you are swimming with some sort of cutting device to save yourself.

This video brought back memories of a similar incident that happened to me and my crew several years ago. I will never forget it. A special need 13 year old boy fell through the ice on a winter camp in Marion county Iowa. He went there to meet new friends because he had trouble socializing. The last day he walked out on the frozen lake to pose for pictures for his new friends. Suddenly he dropped through. Just dissapeared. vanished. The sherrif called me because he was looking for some one that was overhead-environmend and dry suit certified. The shop I usually went to gave him my number. I called some friends that I had dove with frequently before and trusted that were willing to volunteer. We had to wait 3 weeks before it was safe to dive. Set a plan and did a circular search based on where he went under. We found him laying on the bottom with his arms crossed accross his chest. Long story short. When he was brought up we realized he was protecting an 8x10 group photo of him and all his new friends. We turned the body over to the medical examiner and sat together around a camp fire still in our dry suits. No words were spoken and the sherrifs deputy approched us with an envelope for each of us. We were paid $400 each for our efforts. As we sat there one of the guys said, "Are you all thinking what I'm thinking?" We all knodded. We all got up and approched the boys mother and handed her our envelopes. "We hope this helps" She broke down and hugged us all and thanked us. I think about that a lot even now. I'm 62 but I would do it again in a heart beat. Brovo to you and your team for bringing closure. Thank for bringing that memory back.

As the Capt said there is a real and present need for divers and dive teams around this country. Being a 20+ yr firefighter, peace officer and recreational Master Diver. I saw the need locally, many years ago, In an incident not too dissimilar to yours. I took it upon my self to become a Public Safety Diver at my own expense to fill that need. Not only to file cases on the bad guys and keep our waterways clear of debris that could potentially cause more personal injury or property damage. But more importantly to bring closure to the family's of those who lost their lives in a marine environment by recovering their loved one/s. Having that closure, and being able to lay their loved ones to rest. Brings a level of peace to the family that few truly understand until you see it. When you see that peace in their eyes and hear it in their voices.....It was worth every second! You and your team are a model example of professionalism! When I have been in those shoes before, I don't impress easily! Jared you, and your team, have impressed me! Be Safe Brother. As you were gentleman...

You aren't aware of how these departments budgets work. Once you spent a couple of decades into budgets and realise that these budgets must be planned years in advance (at least two more) and these budgets must cover everything (salaries, fuel, equipment and other standard cost) imagine planning for you annual household budget and then someone comes to visit and wrecks your car and expects you to pay for all the repairs to your car and the other damages they caused and you say, "I can't, I don't have enough money" and someone says to you, "I just hate your attitude" this is pretty much what your comment is saying.

@@janemarsee3311 so if someone in a sheriff's area goes missing and say, they believe he drove into a river, the sheriff can then say "sorry, we don't have the money to look for them?" That's not someone coming to visit, that's actually what they're budgeting for. That's their job. Maybe if they've tried to find them and couldn't, you could say that but outright refusing to try? That's not acceptable. Then it's ok for the sheriff to be a jackass when they hire outside help since the sheriff decided they couldn't do it?

Was an EMT for three and a half years in Albany. Never forgot the first time I saw a dead body. Never forgot the unmoving dead weight that it had when I picked him up to put him on the floor to begin CPR. In my experience, it's not the body that affects you, it's knowing that it's someone's loved one. I'm a medical student now, and working with corpses doesn't affect me in the slightest anymore, but seeing people go through the worst kind of pain, losing someone they care about, still does.

As a firefighter in an inner city I can vouch…my team has the option of getting dive certified as rescue but because I’m in CO we have a lot of lakes, tons of white water from the Rocky Mountains so the outer city EMS units for example in Golden, CO you have to be certified as a diver for rescue and recovery due to all of the things that happened in this recovery that Jared and his team did. If you are not familiar with how quickly you can get caught up in a bad situation and drowned…you have no business doing these types of things. I’m going on 19 years with the fire service for structure and wildland and there are 14 dive teams in surrounding areas that do our recoveries and assist us in water rescue. You guys are awesome! Thank you for bringing safety to the forefront of all the recoveries you do and thank you for being selfless, and awesome people with huge hearts ❤️

As a career firefighter/medic on the dive team for over 25 years, I have to comment on these guys. First, the Sheriff is correct about the tight restrictions "agency" divers are governed by. Black water diving is dangerous, even in calm water. Add swift current and the danger escalates. Jarad and his crew are more proficient at this type of diving than most agencies. Watching Jarad and this team here, brought different emotions, but most of all was how proud they made me feel watching them. Even though we never met, I felt a closeness to these guys and just wanted to thank them and give them a hug. Strange ? maybe to some. But, we all do the same things, for the same reasons, whether it's 100' underwater, or inside a 1300* structure fire. But these fine men "offer" their help and expertise and make personal sacrifice to do it. That says so much about the character and conviction they have. My mother's brother has been missing for best part of 10 years now, and she has said on so many occasions the not knowing hurts and she just wish she knew where he was, even he was dead. Helping people find missing loved ones, yes I understand finding them passed away is terrible, but I do honestly believe in your message that it helps people to move on, now that they have finally found an answer. That not knowing part can hurt much much much more than finding out they have passed on.

I love how everyone is praising the sheriff for being so humble, gracious and honest about the need for their expertise, advice, knowledge and experience. He was so appreciative and genuinely grateful for everything that the AWP team did to bring Nathan home and give some comfort to his family, finally allowing them to grieve. The one thing that bothers me though is that we are all so happy and also surprised that this sheriff was so wonderful and willing to take the expert advice from the AWT team and approached this situation without any ego whatsoever. Isn’t is so sad that normally there is pushback from the sheriff’s, with massive amounts of ego, condescending comments and just being completely ignorant. They are probably not wanting AWP to find anyone because it will look bad on their police department. It absolutely infuriates me that they are more concerned with potentially damaging their own reputation rather than giving these missing people and their families so form of closure. I hope they look back on the videos they are featured on and are truly embarrassed of their disgusting, pathetic, egotistical behaviour. They’re should watch this amazing sheriff and learn something from him. It’s such sad world we live in but thankfully their are some decent sheriff’s who genuinely care about the citizens in his community.

@SkyCop Wife We know all that we are not stupid, but an "Intelligent" or compassionate Sheriff would fully embrace any, or all, help from the public, or a private company, to help solve a case (because they work for the public, not the courts or Federal government, A Sheriff is elected by the people, for the people). These cases would have gone nowhere had it not been for the professionalism of that company, and the suffering families that hired them, so a bit of common sense and compassion would be the appropriate response from any Sheriff concerned in one of these cases. It's plain to see, that ego's are involved in many of these cases, and that is borne out by the differing responses of Sheriffs they deal with. If it was purely just because of "the law" or protocols, they would all have a uniform response. So, no, it's not a clueless, moronic response at all.

As a former firefighter, he made me tear up. I had to tell a father the same thing, at a 3 car collision involving his daughter. She ended up being one of two that lived, but when he fell to his knees crying, I lost a piece of myself. I will never forget that, nor any of the other times I had to recover a body or treat a dying patient. That shit just doesn't wash off, like the soot and ash. It stains your soul...

Don’t EVER give up on that dream! Since I was 10 years old I wanted to be a Forensic Pathologist. Unfortunately, an abusive man had me in his clutches from age 15 to 24 and I didn’t get to go to Baylor to continue my education and accomplish my goals. I was lucky enough to get training by the leading pathologist in a large city and participated in several summer programs at the University morgue. Those were the best years of my life. I learned the most amazing science I’ve ever seen. However, that’s as far as I got. I’m 35 now and my biggest regret in life is not fighting harder for my dream. I really wanted to help people and solve murders to bring justice to the victims. Granted, my mother ended up becoming brain damaged and paralyzed and I had to give up everything anyway (I take care of her all by myself), but the fact that I gave up eats me up inside. Don’t let anyone or anything get in the way of your dream. Harness that passion and allow it to keep you focused. You CAN help people and you CAN make a difference in the world. We as a community are so PROUD of you! Keep working hard and achieve your goals!!!

This video showed better than all the other videos the real danger these divers go through in order to get a dead person home. Strong currents, zero visibility, cold waters and in an unknown underwater terrain with a failing oxygen tank. That is enough to scare the most hardheaded of us. You guys are heroes. Plain and simple. It must be heart wrenching for the police to not be able to help the family. Their heart is at the right place but the fundings are not. Any district neighboring to waters, rivers etc have need of double the amount of funds than they are receiving. But do they get it? No. I hope the family finds peace and closure now that their brother is “home”. May he rest in peace.
