Polypipe Building Products have 6 different waste systems which are broken down into 3 connection types: push fit, solvent weld & compression (mechanical).
The uses of these systems depends on the type of application, where you are based in the country or just simply preference. Regional variance at the moment seems to have a large influence of plumber preference with push fit being popular in the north and midlands of the UK. Whereas in the south and Scotland, solvent weld is the preferred choice of system.
Push Fit is a great system if you need to change something or make a small error after you've connected the pipe and fittings. You can take the system apart again, restart and make adjustments as required.
Solvent Weld is essentially the opposite to push fit. If you get something wrong after you've glued the system together, you'll have to cut the fitting from pipe and use a new fitting. However the advantaged of solvent weld is that the system is a solid one piece. So overall solvent weld is a bit more specialist taking slightly more time to install but has advantages to being one solid system.
Compression fittings sit in between solvent weld and push fit. Solvent weld and push fit are completely different systems which aren't compatible. Compression on the other hand, works with both push fit and solvent weld. It works like push fit in that if you get the install slightly wrong you can take it apart and start again.
