I went to a street fair last year and they had this out as a challenge. Took me about 5 minutes to solve it. They were impressed, apparently I was the first one of the day to do it. I agree with your rating. All I did was line up the pieces in reverse order and put them all in. Once I did that, it was pretty easy to see which ones were the same height and fix the others with trial and error.

These puzzles always look easy until you actually try them. I own a 36 cube puzzle which follows a similar idea. If you try to solve that one with trial-and-error, you will succeed until the last few pieces which then are "impossible" to place. That one adds colours in addition to the heights though, so it might be slightly more difficult than the pin puzzle you presented

I had a different idea as to how to solve it (potential spoilers ahead, I guess...) I would leave all the pieces in and only take the piece that appears to be highest and swap it with the piece that appears to be lowest, then just keep doing that. I don't know if it would solve the puzzle, but that would be my method to try.

Not a bad approach but he would probably get stuck switching the same two pieces all the time if the tallest and shortest are 2 mid-sized sticks, one in a very shallow hole and the other in a very deep one.

What would've really been cool is if there were certain pins that were smaller or bigger so that they'd sit differently in holes in addition to their height. Or maybe if the holes had certain ways you had to set in certain pins, or they wouldn't work.
@Sylthsaber
@Sylthsaber 6 жыл бұрын
This one is Interesting, the other thing i would try and do with it is see if there is a combination in which the height of the pins is parallel to the base. so like when you lay your board on the top it is the same angle as the diagonal cut.
@Naratis
@Naratis 6 жыл бұрын
immediately looking at the puzzle I thought it would be incredibly easy to just test each hole with the longest puzzle piece then put the pieces in order relative to that. Might not be the fastest method, but it would be a super easy one EDIT: what you did was basically what I was thinking!

+David McGill That might be a more interesting way to solve it. Set yourself the rule that the only move you can make is to swap two adjacent pieces. Then try and find the smallest number of moves needed to get them level.
@FranciscoGoodface
@FranciscoGoodface 5 жыл бұрын
@@BunnyTVS exactly, it would be a rule to add in order to make it more complex, but what he did (extracting all pins at the begining and order them by size) breaks the rule and makes the solution faster.

I'd give it a 1 out of 5 and I'm no puzzler at all. As soon as I saw it I figured out a method pretty similar to yours, just a little less try and error. I'd use any stick (could as well be the longest pin) to measure the depths of all the holes and reproduce the puzzle drawing it on a piece of paper. Little bit more work but I would get them all in the right positions on the first time.

I solved a puzzle in a video game based on this concept just yesterday, (same day the video was published what a coincidence). The platforms were open, so it was slightly easier, but due to it being a video game, there were some constraints on what you could do. I would be interested in whether you would consider this puzzle any more difficult if you could swap any two pieces at a time, but otherwise had to keep all the pieces in the puzzle. (The constraint I had.)
