#soniclab #soma #terra
We were invited to visit Soma Sound Machines at their Warsaw factory and while we were there were shown the pre production model of the Terra - the unique and very sensitive instrument . Terra features twelve extremely sensitive nodes (cant think of what else to call them!) for playing pitches, plus five for modifying the timbre, there are also 7 modifier knobs which globally effect the sound with two being dependent on the algorithm used.
Despite the wooden case, Terra is a digital sound source and has multiple models which are played rather like instruments, each model has 64 variations. As usual, its a rather off the wall concept, but thats what makes Soma the way it is. In practice, its incredibly sensitive and flexible - reminds us of the Eagan Matrix instruments found in the Haken Continuum or the Osmose.
The Terra will be in production very soon and making its way into the stores.

Its Awesome that Vladimir made it with materials as natural organic as Oak wood. The sound frequencies Bends, Goes with the Grain of real Timber Wood.Versus synthetic plasticities that leaves the listener with less than is expected. Its full Soma within variations that pushes, then pulls it's own nuances, or sensitive, yet synthesis vibrations.Through Real instrumental tonal scales, that full on Resonates within alot more soulful, than not usually bargained for.

What if he and other electronic instrument builders would have a video output from the instrument to connect to a variety of monitors to see the what the parameters and knobs are doing? Further in the future the parameters could represent commands to a visual software so the audience would see visuals changing with what the musician is doing.

@@silverblue73 No, with all due respect, amplification and pickups revolutionised music, multi-track recording revolutionised music. If I desperately wanted something like this, I could make it from basic components and bind them via midi, assuming I didn't already have 100 different ways to control that are better suited. Sliders, pedals, pads, wheels, knobs, buttons, slide/tilt axis and keys with aftertouch, to name just a few. If you like it then buy it, workflow is key and we are all different, but I will not for a second accept or pretend that this is a revolutionary product, because it isn't. If in 20 years, every musician is using one, get back to me and I'll apologise.

I use a lot of Soma inventions for my experimental music. These machines grow on you. And: they are meant to be used live. Even the Pulsar, which is rather complex and, above all, very versatile. In the beginning, it all looks a bit too complicated for creating patches and / or playing it manually in a live situation. But the more you try, the more it opens up. Especially in Sessions with other musicians. Also, stuff like the Ornament 8 expands the traditional boundaries of their genres. All in all: thanks to Vlad and his team for providing with this - and combining solid craftsmanship with an adventurous mind. I will get the Enner this year - and I anticipate this new offspring of the machinists of dreams.😉

SOMA speaks to me on a deep level. It goes way beyond music gear. It’s the art, the creativity, the soul, the way Vlad thinks about things, the way he values the expressiveness and contributions of other people, in and out of his company, the way the business is run - the whole way Vlad and his collaborators and employees go about their business just strikes me as inspiring, even compelling. People can disagree about how well this or that product succeeds as a musical instrument, or, more properly, about how well a given product satisfies the more or less arbitrary requirements of a given potential customer, but I would hope everyone can feel the love being put into the venture. For me, the instruments work very well indeed, and this newest one has been calling to me since we first saw prototypes long ago now. I’m in a state of brutal illness, so I am not playing much and I am buying very little music gear. It makes sense for me to buy something that does a lot and acts as a MIDI controller - a one-stop kind of overstuffed “workstation” keyboard - if I am going to buy any 1000€-plus synthesizer at all in my depleted and increasingly money-challenged state. But this Terra forces that idea right out of my head. Terra is a brilliantly designed and deeply expressive instrument and it has Vlad’s mark on it. Forgetting the money, it’s just hard to justify buying an instrument now, when I may struggle to be able play it going forward because of pain and bad health. It tempts me very strongly, however, so I have some serious thinking to do. Thanks a lot, Nick.

Why not? Imagine the sound moving together with the ship and thus with the listeners as well! All together his could come up as an amazingly pleasing, immersive experience. Give up total control and float with the waves..! I'm pretty shure Vlad would like this very idea.

You could also use it to serve cheese at the buffet on the same cruise and create a new kind of inadvertend music genre. I kid the Terra of course, it looks super interesting. Also it seems to continue the proud tradition of synthesizers that can be played by sausage, of which there are definitely not enough of.

Next to Baroque music, I am fascinated by New Music and unconventional instruments that create it. This Terra Synth looks intriguing.
