This is a USIU-Africa student project. We investigate why the Somali-dominated district of Nairobi, Eastleigh, has become a trade hub for all of East Africa despite the very poor infrastructure of the district.
Our interviewees are Somali community leader Hajji Hussein, businessman Muhammed Ibrahim Shakul, anthropologist Dr. Paul Goldsmith, and professor Macharia Munene (USIU).

Im kenyan and have grown up with Somalis and they are generous and ambitious people, they might have political problems in their countries but they also build the Kenyan economy by paying taxes. We are all brothers and sisters Mashallah !

Somali people are accomplished business people and a great source of revenue for the in-coming government. The question of what makes them good business people was not fully addressed. As far back as 1331, Ibn Batuta described Mogadishu as "an extremely large city with many merchants." That, puts the Somali people in the front line as far as commerce is concerned. They see opportunities faster than other communities.

Somalis are a thorn to Indian and British retail business interest in East Africa, by living side by side with their fellow Africans and linking them to alternative markets and goods from Asia, they have side stepped the Indians and white retail businesses who rather keep a sterile distance from Africans, while still wanting to make money from them. Some Kenyans have now setup similar business in Eastleigh as they have learned from the Somalis.

Al-Shabaab terrorism almost ruined Somali reputation in Kenya but at least now, Al-Shabaab influence is on the decline. It is up to Somali businessmen in Nairobi to inhibit such terrorist inclinations to ensure their safety and prosperity as a people.

The unsanitary place the garbage and sewer water sitting everywhere which is not healthy I think is it deliberate because I seen South Africa where somalis have businesses is like that the government doesn't clean up or fix the road. Because as Somali people we like clean presentable where we live and work. I think is time Somalis came back home.

Unbelievable how Somalis get harassed, simply working for their family and contribute to the country's economy. And not committing crimes or steal but just working hard to provide for your family. In South Africa they get harassed and vandalized their business and Turkey too.

The fact you don't do certain jobs doesn't mean you demean those who do it, Now the problem with you people is chest thumping ,if you all that prefect Somalis wouldn't be dying of hunger in somalia in millions as it happens to date , relying on foreign powers to aid the country or support military or education there ,learn to appreciate others who around you, it doesn't cost anythng, some Somalis in Kenya ,or USA or canada or south afrca are also doing fine becoz of the conducive environment they find there ,infractrcture, security, political instability ,strong institutions ,no political intolerance or kicking out refugees like Turkey ,Saudi, denmark and South africa were doing, all the great countries that Somalis are in are great with or without them . learn to appreciate your freindly host country , not every country will welcome you ,you can look at Mynmar, China, or North KOREA

What I meant by not kissing ass is not feeling inferior or less than the white man actually he is my biggest supporter. I desire the best of everything. Somali is in the condition we are in is because we fight each other we did it to ourselves. We have to stop killing each other and destroying our cities and country. We are an ancient kick ass people. Good Luck!

Without Kenya's well educated working class, tea , coffee and other crops make Kenya's promote these businesses. There is a big customer base considering Kenya is the biggest economy in East and Central Africa even before Somalia came to Kenya in the 90's. Indigenous Kenyans are the one who bring foreign exchange to the country and Somaliland are beneficially because they aren't in agriculture, manufacturing and tourism which bring Kenya foreign exchange.
