Somali warlord General Mohammed Farah Aideed has denounced a
weekend meeting that apparently ousted him as the chairman of the
United Somali Congress-Somali Alliance faction. Delegates at the
central committee's meeting voted to have Osman Atto replace
Aideed as faction leader. Atto, a businessman once close to Aideed, told a news conference in Mogadishu on Tuesday (13/6) that Aideed was invited to the meeting but did not attend. He said Aideed had isolated Somalia from the outside world and possessed the "wrong leadership."=

central committee was the only group capable of convening a
conference and they have ousted him. We invited him to
participate but he didn't so they made this new appointment. I
think it was the wrong leadership. We could have solved the
problem if Aideed would not have insisted on continuing his
isolation. We could have started dialogue with the other factions
with the participation of the international community. The reason
the recent conference failed was because of Aideed's leadership
and not the UN
