I once stopped for a pedestrian on a narrow 2 lane city road and behind my truck, as the pedestrian was crossing, a car started to go around me. I immediately honked my horn to warn the pedestrian and pulled left into the next lane enough to block the car. It just happens the car was a cop car (no emergency lights or siren) and boy was the officer mad, but he had not seen the guy crossing in front of me. He ended up getting an ear full from the pedestrian who was pissed off that a cop would have hit him if he had gone past my truck. At least the cop was man enough that when he realized what had happend, he apologized to both of us and we all went our separate ways. This is why that on small city streets, when I stop for people crossing, I always stop with plenty of room to be able to block people trying to go around when the pedestrian(s) are crossing. I have a big truck.

I'm from the Netherlands and what strikes me is how wide the streets are in the US in comparison to the Netherlands. At the pedestrian crossing our streets are also divided into multiple sections so you don't have to cross all the way at once.
@BrokenCurtain Жыл бұрын
That's also a recent development, btw.: there were massive protests in the 1970s because the streets were overtaken by cars, so the Dutch demanded change. There's a channel here on KZfaq that talks about the differences in urban planning between the USA and the Netherlands: "Not Just Bikes". Basically, the USA has been designed for cars since the 1950s while the Netherlands focussed on making their streets safe for children to use.

Especially with 6 lanes of traffic to contend with. Here in Oz, we have some pedestrian crossings that are across multiple lanes on busy roads (like this one) controlled by the pedestrian in which a push of the button will give the traffic a red light so the pedestrian can move to a traffic island where another button will stop traffic coming the other way. This way the pedestrian can cross safely - since they are actual red lights for the cars - and also you don't end up with 4 or 6 lanes of traffic stopped all at once, just 2 or 3 lanes at a time.

I remembered trying to cross a „crosswalk“ in the US once. Even after pushing this button for a flash warning no one reason stopped, it was such a hassle crossing that street. I think the problem that no one really stops for pedestrians is because American cities are built just for the car and they aren‘t walkable at all. Plus, infrastructure is so carcentric that of course some paint won’t stop anyone. In my city in Europe, walking is the most used mode of transportation (around 30% of overall traffic), because of walkable neighborhoods, parks and pedestrianized streets and an overall density. Some cities even have 50% foot traffic. If the US wants to stop it’s cities from becoming financially insolvent, drowning in car traffic and being highly excluding and neglecting of the poor, they need to tear down their freeways, allow and encourage other types of housing like mid-rised building blocks and mixed used areas and redistibute public space to people walking, cycling and taking public transit.

@@bobbobbly7900 Well there is your problem, you would let a 40 kilo child cross that street alone, that would make them about 8-10 years old, You would be guilty of child abuse, or neglect. Yes I noticed it was a 4 lane road. I never said it was of no consequence, drivers should pay the price for disobeying traffic laws. YOU as the parent are responsible for that child, just as much as the driver is responsible to stop!! Actually to your point, if EVERYONE followed the law, we could remove all lights. Unless the intersection has traffic lights, the pedestrian has the right of way. That's how it works here in Sweden. However, you should always be aware anway, as there are complete morons in traffic here too. Once when I was about to cross the street at a pedestrian crossing, I heard and saw in the corner of my eye, that literally when I had taken my first step into the street, a young fellow hit the gas to speed up so that he could pass me on his lane before I reached it. He reckoned I'd stop in the middle of the road to let him through, but I challenged him and forced him to break hard and come to a full stop - and boy was he pissed. Honking angrily, yelling and swearing and waving that middle finger all over the place. I just told him; if you wanna talk about it, get out of the car - otherwise, just buzz off. He left. The fact that I was nearly double his size may or may not have persuaded him not to try anything. To make it clear; I would never throw the first punch, but he didn't know that. I'd just give him a bit of a scare. Hopefully, he learned something.

It's six lanes of traffic at regular town speeds with no traffic calming or pedestrian refuge. If someone set out to make a dangerous road crossing that drivers would ignore, this video is exactly what they would make. Traffic engineers have come up with solutions to these problems, and it's not handing out tickets. Here’s a crazy idea! Not everyone wants to or has the means to own a car. There should be a lot more crosswalks NOT ONLY at regular intersections. Many municipalities have crosswalks which allow you to push a button to activate visual hazard lights when a pedestrian needs to cross. This works great in areas with low pedestrian crossings. Why are people putting blame on pedestrians when there’s plenty of options to keep everyone safe? Is the little bit of extra money not worth it to save lives at crosswalks?

This is such a sticky situation. I realize that in theory it sounds great and is intended to protect pedestrians, but I've seen waaaaaay too many instances (including personally) where a large vehicle is stopped for a pedestrian in a crosswalk and another driver approaching the intersection from behind the larger vehicle can't see around them. It's unfortunate and horrible to see people injured but in some cases this law isn't applied appropriately. In my city buses load and unload near the corner of intersections. There's often no way of seeing a person that may dart out from in front of the bus to cross the street.

I never ever use these types of crosswalks for that reason alone. No one pays attention to the yellow flashing lights, because most people don't know those are pedestrian CROSSING lights. Having said that, sadly enough a lot of people also don't know that pedestrians have the right away when crossing a street and you must STOP for THEM. IT'S THE LAW. They also need to put up bigger and more noticeable signs, warning before they get to the crosswalk.

Nice work the city has done. Instead of narrow down the road or putting a stop light on, the city chose to harass drivers who were likely not having the chance to see the pedestrians. It takes engineering to stop accidents, not harassment from "law enforcement".

This is all part of the dominance the car on the US road system, there just isn’t the expectation that a pedestrian has right of way and they are a lesser being for walking anyway. There doesn’t seem to be a solid convention for crosswalks anyway (happy to enlightened otherwise), seems a bit harsh to entirely blame the motorists in that environment. That’s seeing it from a UK perspective, would be interested to hear if anyone from the US can shed more light. I found crosswalks and 4 way stops the strangest things when driving in the US, everything else was easy, despite driving on the wrong side😂

It happens in small towns as well. I live in a Village in Michigan. Try using a walker to cross at a 4 way stop! I have been almost hit 4 times and clipped once, why? Because these people do a "rolling" stop whilst on their cell phones. Then, they bitch at me because I am holding them up!! When I was using a cane to walk. I made sure no cars were stopped or coming. The closest car was 3 lengths from the stop sign, and they just went through it, while looking towards the Bay, away from me, my elbow clipped their side mirror, but the candle took out the rear passenger window. The State Trooper behind them cited them for running a stop sign, failure to yield to a pedestrian in the crosswalk, bodily harm to pedestrian, distracted driving, (on cell). Driver went to jail, passenger could not drive, no license, so the vehicle was towed. These idiots get what they deserve.
