My stages over 3 decades: 1. Blissful absorption (year 1-2) 2. Disgusted remorse (year 2-5) 3. Disgruntled isolation (year 5-9) 4. Begrudging acceptance (9-15) 5. Numb sense of belonging (15+) 6. Complete indifference (25+)

The Philippines can be very difficult for westerners. For some, it simply is too taxing on the nerves especially those who are looking to have less stress during their retirement years. They may find it unbelievable how the simplest of products can constantly be out of stock. They may not be able to adjust to the continuous noise, dogs, roosters, poverty, brownouts, lack of infrastructure amongst a host of other things. After having both lived in the Philippines and having visited many times, I find that visiting for a specific length of time works best for me. And I am fine with that type of Philippines relationship. It does not have to be all or nothing gentlemen.

10 years and counting. Counting my blessings daily, a good habit to get into. As Joe says, I can't complain, but sometimes I still do.

Good points and interesting walk Randy. I find it surprising that it is rare that I see a mosquito or fly in the 6 condos I have live in over 9 years. Go to the markets or other streets, and there are plenty. One of several reasons I moved out of Miinnesota where the mosquitos abound in the summer.

Mosquitos are afraid of heights! You want flies, try hanging some pork belly on your veranda! 🤣 Walks here in the province are a bit different from walks in the city. And Minnesota, I fished there one time... ONCE! 😉

It is what it is. Warm beer, accept the ice if there is no alternative. It's not great, but it is beer. Good vid.

I agree with you. Foreigners who come to the Philippines for the first later in life have a rude awaking as you noted many times. They hear the stories of how cheap it is, easy to find women to have a relationship. When things do not work out, they begin to have a bad attitude about the Philippines. Some just come without any research prior to arriving and wonder why they are having issues. Both of us, we have been coming to the Philippines for over 40 plus years, for us, it will be going on 48 years. My wife and I were luckily enough to be stationed in Subic on two shore tours which gave us the opportunity to travel to see her family on a small island off of Western Samar. We built a house on the island about ten years ago and we travel back and forth yearly, if possible. I have met a few Americans in Calbayog City and on the island who have adapted to living in Calbayog, and other small towns Western Samar. It all boils down like you mentioned, adjusting to the culture of the Philippines and go with the flow. Of course, there are times we get upset on something that we as foreigners cannot understand or accept. But it's best to let it go and enjoy life in a beautiful country. As for the issues with the dumping of trash all over the land, in the ocean. Behind our house which is about 10 feet away from the water, our house is on the bottom of a "U" shaped barangay that collects all the trash. I have tried to clean it up with the help of the kids or even her sister. Filled up 6 snacks one day and still was not enough. The next morning, we had a trash build up. Last year, the women of the Barangay picked up as much trash as they could pull out from under the sand, and it was just a waste of time as it just keeps coming back. The people just do not care as being on an island, there is just nowhere to dump it for collection, burn etc.

My biggest issue in such a beautiful place... is the trash. Some of the trash we find along our shores comes from other islands. All we can do is attempt to educate and hope for even the slightest change in mentality.

Yes it is sad walking by a Sari Sari store and the former owners are gone. It would be nice to organize a cleanup party to police up the area of trash. Purchase about 50 rakes and boxes of trash bags or something. Then all elbow grease.

Several years ago, we pushed for a clean up, and it did happen. We also got the barangay captain to require trash cans outside each sari sari store. People would still throw their trash on the ground... right next to the receptacle. Then it became a hassle to empty the containers, now they are all gone.
