YGO and MTG player here! I think why people get mad at the cEDH scene is because of a lot of coincidences. EDH was conceived as casual, where anyone could sit and play with everyone using a deck that rarely changes much. It’s pretty slow going, so I think that’s why cEDH split off kinda. WotC, though, has printed a lot of cards that have sped up the casual crowd. I think people also encounter a lot of “pubstomping”, which gets attributed to competitive players. Hope this helps out a bit!

I kind of liked playing MTG with my stepbrother but it got really hard to play fair games. I put effort into putting together a deck from my box of bulk, he didn't, I washed him. He bought playsets of Nightmare and removal spells, he washed me. I built Merfolk, I washed him (unless he opened well). He let me take the bad cards out of his deck for him, he washed me. I bought like 3 decks off tcgplayer and wrecked him in like 4 minutes with every single one 3 games in a row and we never played again.

CEDH is killing mtg as far as I can tell because the banlist is regulated by what appears to be some shady people. But mostly it's because all tutor effects aren't banned. You could leave fetchlands just fine, but like all other tutor effects need to go. It's highlander. One copy of a card should mean one copy, not functional 2 or 3 with tutors. Also, maybe screw dual lands.
