You kind of hit on the ideal use case for the pocket sai at the end there. Sais originated from a farming tool used for poking holes in the ground to sow seeds. It'd make the two smaller holes on either side, so you could line up the next hole, and end up with a nice straight row of crops. Lots of the old Japanese weapons developed as repurposed farming tools when regular weapons weren't allowed, and it turned out to be quite a good weapon for blocking swords, what with the side prongs that could catch the blade and twist it out of the opponent's hand. Nowadays you're not likely to get attacked by many people with swords, but it actually could be a nice little pocket tool for doing a little gardening.

I don’t think some of the old weapons were farming tools. The sai for example. If you used the long prong for one hole and the shorter ones to pre make holes to be more precise, it would be more efficient to just have 3 long ones so you get 3 full holes and you can line up the next ones. A pitchfork may do a better job as it has four prongs and doesn’t require you to kneel in the dirt. If the sai were made of metal, they could be used as weapons by higher ups or soldiers who could afford metal because they are somewhat concealable and great against swords and other weapons. But some like the kama totally make more sense as a farming tool.
@6022
@6022 3 ай бұрын
@@visousbeeTrue, but if you're making holes in tougher dirt, it is way easier if you're just doing one main hole at a time. Truth is, I actually have a sai, and I have used it to sow seeds in the heavy clay soil where I live!

@tobybigham4196 absolutely, and part of that has to do with shrinking its overall dimensions down. With a reduced mass effectiveness with blunt strikes goes down dramatically, so coupled with future intentions like my UPK-D4 Bayonets and sheathing fully double edged blades, the bevels popularized by modern marvel characters like Elektra already paved the way to the appeal of beveled Sai.

@Crystal.and.diamond
@Crystal.and.diamond 5 ай бұрын
@@CowsGoM3ow it doesn't, it just get destroyed very quickly so the weapon would have a very short lifespan and require constant repair. If you were using a sword to parry an attack you would use the flat side and not the blade. With the blade on this lined up towards the upwards guards (I don't know the technical term for them) the would be completely ruined in a very short time in a fight. The reason for the upward points on the guard is to use the center 'blade' to stop the attack and slide it down in between the two, a twisting action is then used to pry the attacker's weapon out of their hands by twisting their weapon against their grip towards their fingers which is the weak part of your grip.

It was a samurais last defense weapon as they commonly fought with bows, naginatas, and spears. Katana was not a great sword to use in combat againts another sword.

For your information,the sai was a specializedweapon like the Bundi dagger and was a cilíndrical knife with three edges. It had the two prongs to catch bladed weapons. Once you get stabbed, the wound could not be sutured surgically. This type of bladed weapon had three edges in opposition to the two-sided sword. It was part of the weaponry banned in World War 1 by the Geneva Convention. It is part of the Okinawan emblem. Instead of the Yin-Yang duality, it has the threefold pronciple.

That thing is designed to make nasty holes in people. That center channel completely eliminates the need for the slight twist you need to overcome the vacuum force once you’ve stabbed and want to remove the knife for another strike. Don’t know how well it would do with slicing, not a whole lot of handle to grasp and the connection seems like it might be a lot weak to side force, but for stabbing? Damn that’s perfect.

By the rules, the button does not release the blade. The button unlocks the blade, but since the button is integrated into the blade it must be biased open with an extra manual action, thus making it an assisted opener. Gravity won't work alone, an actual centripetal force must be created or just push it open manually.
@THIS---GUY

It's more of a centrifugal knife which is banned in many places as well
@upknife

@THIS-IS-GUY its not a button release though, the button is integral to the blade, so pressing the button only unlocks it, you must manually force the blade out of the locking position, a bias, then you can let go of the button, so its an assisted opener
