This is my favorite John Hughes movie thank you for talking about it. I loved the soundtrack as well and even had it on cassette.

I’m an 80s kid who have this film rated as my favorite John Huges movie but even my older brother and cousins who also grew up in the 80s had never heard of this film. By the way i have many of the music videos of the soundtrack of my playlist. Same with the Lost Boys soundtrack. You should search for them if you haven’t already

This is one of my all time favourite films! And not just because of Mary Stuart Masterson... You want to know more about everyone, and Hughes has an abilitity to attract these ensemble casts that have left an amazing body of work.

Soundtrack is one of the best from the 80’s. I liked Pretty in Pink, but I liked this movie better. Better soundtrack too. Yeah, I said it!

I'm so glad you took the time to make this video. When this movie came out in 1987 I saw it in the theater. I was almost 16 years old and it spoke to me like no other movie had. And as you said, the soundtrack is just amazing. It exposed me to so many good new-to-me styles of music and bands I had never heard of before. To this day (thirty-six years later!) I still revisit the movie and soundtrack. Nice work! 🙂

Thank you so much! It’s so cool to see that this movie has touched 16 year olds from different generations!

I'm a gen x and loved your video! Some kind of wonderful is my fav too. Along with Say Anything. That girl that said "No" to you was insecure about herself. Straight up. High School life in the 80's was exactly like this movie and still is today. So sad. Just rise above it people! That's what Amanda did.

I had just graduated from college at the time this came , I graduated in 86 and saw this in 87 I believe. It so reminded me of my high school. I absolutely loved this movie more than any of the other John Hughes movie. I thought it better than Pretty in Pink. A little trivia Eric Stolz was tapped to play Marty McFly in Back to the Future, they even filmed scenes with him, but they thought he just wasn't right for the part due to his comedic timing and he lost out to Michael J. Fox who was perfect for that part, but then found this gem of a movie. I always kind of tear up at the end watching this movie and I absolutely loved it when Duncan and his boys come into the last scene 😊 I loved Mary Stuart Masterson what a great actress and she played in another movie after this, a sad one called Garden of Stone.

I know a lot of people feel in Pretty in Pink she should have been with Ducky, But he comes across more like a annoying little brother than any sort of true love interest.. millions of women have had a ducky in their life that almost always they turn a blind eye romantically to..

AGREE - this movie is definitely better than Pretty In Pink. As someone who WAS in high school in the 1987, I can tell you this story is very realistic [much like The Breakfast Club]. With stories that are so relatable [especially to Gen Xers], it's said that everyone can find themselves in a "John Hughes movie" character. I've always been a "Keith", which makes this my favorite John Hughes story [nicely directed by Howard Deutch].

Your review was excellent. Even your story related to this movie was well told and you seem to get the right lessons from this movie. I like how grounded you are. I saw a few of your other reviews and I think you have good takes, honest and funny. This was one of my favorite movies that I actually saw in the theatre (also Pretty in Pink) and I agree with your take. I loved this movie so much, it was one of the first DVDs I got (Jesus, remember those?). I had a crush on Mary Stuart Masterson, who always played interesting characters for most of her early career. Check out Heaven Help Us which also has her (and Andrew MaCarthy) but honestly she stole that movie in the few scenes she was in. Anyway, just subscribed and I hope you keep making these. I will check out your reviews in the meantime.

Lmao I'm Gen X & I named my daughter Watts. Amazing soundtrack. Stoltz dated Thompson for a few yrs. Met on Back to the Future. Before Stoltz was replaced w Michael J Fox. Harvey played by Craig Shaffer also played in That Was Then This Is Now. Check it out sometime if u like 80s films.

You have a good series here. Still a bit rough but improving. Maybe try to find some collabs? That way you can share audiences, sample some new techniques, and might get you a viewer boost. You're off to a good start. You remind me of early Nostalgia Critic.

You popped up in my suggestion feed. If the internet and vlogging had its beginnings in the 80's, this is what it would look like. And yes, SKOW is a great movie. I watched the release at the theatre. I couldn't wait for it to come out on video. Another movie using the same theme is The Cutting Edge (1992).

Hi! I was talking with my husband about BTTF (our favourite movie as a whole) and he asked me who was the actor that Michael J. Fox replaced and I told him and he asked me in what movies he was and I started to tell him and suddenly I realized that in this movie "Lorraine" played his romantic interest. Anyway, I went to KZfaq to see the trailer and came upon your video and wanted to tell you that loved your analisys and the fact that you have a picture of MJF framed behind you❤

1st off, I love this movie. I am male. But there is no way it passes the Bechdel Test. Maybe Watts. But, her whole story revolves around a man. Amanda, however; decides to be alone. I am beginning to think this is Amanda Jones story.

You mentioned Candace Cameron, but dud you know the other sister is Chynna Phillips, daughter of singers in the 60s/70's pop band The Mamas and the Papas, and singer in 90s group Wilson Phillips (Her hair actually like Watts in this movie) with daughters of Brian Phillips of The Beach Boys. Chynna married William Baldwin, also from a famous family.

I thought the characters were more interesting in this movie than Pretty In Pink and that the stakes were raised in this movie. I mean the plot revolves around a Love Square. I also find the Blaine/Amanda character to be much more interesting in Some Kind Of Wonderful. Amanda was a teenager from a low socioeconomic class using her connection with Hardy to raise her social status and attain things from the rich and popular crowd. Blaine’s character, on the other hand, was one-dimensional Plus I feel like Amanda’s character development is more well-earned in which she realises that it is okay to stand on her own and forge her own path through her discussions with Keith, the way she was treated by Hardy and the way Hardy was embarrassed at the party. Blaine, on the other hand, suddenly had a change of heart out of nowhere with Andie. There were also times when the plot meandered in Pretty In Pink whereas I remained engaged through Some Kind Of Wonderful. And finally, I think Some Kind Of Wonderful had more to say about class dynamics and social hierarchies. If you take one step out of line within the expectations of the popular group, people are shut out of the loop. This is what happened with Amanda.
@averyalyse7 ай бұрын
Oh yeah, 100%. I feel like Amanda is similar to Andie in Pretty in Pink in terms of a girl caught in a world between two social classes, but it’s explored in Some Kind of Wonderful better.

I love this movie, and most of John Hughes movies as well. I disagree that this is a remake of Pretty in Pink the way some people say. I mean, there are definite similarities, but there are enough differences between the 2 that make each it's own movie.

I love "some kind of wonderful" way way way more than any of those other movies where you practically shape every girl for how they should doll up or feel. "The sixteen candle" is THE movie that made me loathe 80's movies. I felt so horrified for month's even though I didn't even finish it! I can't understand why girls loved that! The hunk practically throw his girlfriend, his current one to a random stranger in exchange of new girls panty! That's horrible! You see, this is the time when you feel some sort of shame for your own kind. I know I sounded bitchy but that's exactly how I really felt, I can't tone it down! My shortcomings! I love Watts. She's awesome the whole time and Amanda's ending was awesome too. But I didn't like your review. It felt like you're forcing yourself to liking something that you shouldn't! ❤ for everyone else who really loved it for it's worth regardless of which generation they're. Because of this movie I know we've some really cool Aunts back in days who loved this movie and wasn't shaped by the society!

I wanted to love this movie when I saw it but it's not really funny and not all that interesting. Maybe it is Eric Stoltz acting as if he is on quaaludes. Really great soundtrack...I love that still

I got it later on, but these came out when I was a teen and despite liking this movie, this combined with PiP irritated me. I viewed it as pretty much the same story gender swapped, yet in both cases the main girl involved gets the guy she wants. Doesn't matter which perspective we center on, the girl gets her wishes fulfilled while the guy doesn't.
