6:52 In this context, "The Metroid" may be using 'Metroid' as a plural. All nouns in Japanese can be both singular and plural, depending on the context of the sentence.

So in this case, metroid hatch from eggs by a queen. We won't know that until next game so the ones you encounter in the first are likely clones made from the sample stolen by the pirates.

@@Gaia_BentosZX5 The manga doesn't mention it, but I believe that it's possible for Mother Brain to have furnished the metroid larvae that appear in Tourian. Considering she's a chozo supercomputer and that the chozo created the species, it's possible that there were some still hanging around in the labs.

I've played and beaten everyone but 2, Zero Mission, Other M, Prime Hunters, and Samus Returns (I'm not going out of my way to get a 3DS for just one game). But yeah, Metroid is awesome.

Unless it is an SR388 Metroid (which we know isn't) you need an energy based ice attack and a heavy powered projectile attack. Or just set 3 power bombs.

The Zebeth name might have been a mistranslation due to the "th" phenome in Japanese sounding like the English phenome "s". The Localizers might have assumed it was supposed to be Zebeth rather than Zebes due to this. It's the same mixup that caused Aerith of Final Fantasy VII to be originally known as Aeris. When such words using the "th" sound are romanized, they are often written with an "s" rather than "th".

"th" sounds at the end of a word are one of the hardest things to romanize with Japanese, but it's agreed upon that the best and closest thing to use would be ス "Su". And "Su" is also just used for words that end with an S also. So I think some poor translator had to just stare at ゼベス "Zebesu" and just flip a coin on weather it meant "Zebes" or "Zebeth" because he had no direction. Lmao. Also this is funny because if your name is "Seth" your name becomes the silly sounding "Sesu" セス

18:45 I actually found this segment super fascinating. I always love learning about behind the scenes stuff like this (course, I'm a huge tech nerd). I also find it interesting how, after all these years and after however many times this game has been decompiled and analyzed, we still don't know what those 12 bits are for. Fascinating!

Was 5yrs old when I first set eyes on Metroid(NES). I came home with my mother to find my brother & his friend from school playing this. At the time it had the most out of this world look of any game I'd seen thus far. Been in love with the series ever since.

@@TheMissingLink2 The only thing that really makes it hard is the fact that this is the only game in the series with no rest stations anywhere. Meaning you're spending long *numerous* sessions grinding just to get back to safe levels (for both missiles and health). Earlier this year, out of general curiosity (and because I was bored) of what it's like to be a Let's Player, I decided to make some playthroughs of my own. One of the first ones I picked was Metroid 1. *And it beat my ass.* Sure, I eventually won, but it was painful. 🤣 The grinding sessions are infamous for a reason if you're not a master like Johnny. I'm really thankful you're redoing a lotta the older series from back in the day because they truly deserve the vs treatment, but I also really respect you keeping your old content up to. The one thing that always bums me out is seeing creators privating their old content because well obviously like 10 year old videos aren't gonna meet the standard of your current ones, but those are your roots damnit and people should be proud of their evolution, not ashamed of it. That's my 2 cents anyway- but I friggin love you Johnny, been watching since 2016 and you're a massive inspiration to me and my personal nomination for pope of the Sonic community

Other comments have already explained the Zebes/Zebeth thing, but I just wanted to bring up the fact that a similar case of confusion in the translation lead to the Barrier Suit mistakenly being called the Varia Suit. But in that case the mistranslation actually stuck. Kind of a happy accident, I think. Varia is a much better and more unique name.

17:25 Dang, I didn't even know using the F-Bomb for the password works in the Metroid game. That is a lot like the Metal Gear NES Passwords that used the F-Bomb takes you straight to Big Boss.

YEEEEAAH! I just started getting into Metroid and Metroidvanias in general, so I can't wait for this! I beat Ori and the Blind Forest at the same time Dread got announced, so I finally dove into the Metroidvania genre. Beat Zero Mission, I've started Metroid II on GB, and I started Tails' Adventure on Game Gear.

If it wasn't for my cousin, I probably wouldn't even know that this game exists, but I do, and I love it. But I must confess, when I was a kid, this game used to scare the _shit_ out of me! Especially Tourian! Watching my cousin get devoured by a Metroid was quite frightening at the tender age of 4!

After years of hearing about the development story of the original Metroid and Kid Icarus, I always figured Metroid would have been the much better game. Then I actually played the original games, and I think Kid Icarus actually turned out better. Metroid without maps or a proper way to heal is a real drag, and the way the ice beam was handled hurts. It really came into its own on the SNES, while Kid Icarus just got forgotten until it became the best Star Fox game 25 years later.

Kraid is incredibly easy to beat by rolling into the ball, staying close to him, and spamming bombs.

@@Toadn100 I had almost collected all 180 red rings when I noticed my Park Token counter was maxed out and it certainly takes away from the experience a bit. In addition there's one glitch that was present in the original that I was able to replicate in the remaster so I guess in addition to the next ones Blind Squirrel still needs to patch out the olds one too.

They probably meant "Metroid" as both the singular and plural in the game itself. You know, like fish. Or moose. And it's called the Screw Attack because you spin to do it. Spin attacks and rolls… do I see fast, colorful furballs in the distance? And starting your jumps from a standstill will keep them from drifting, making the escape climb a cakewalk.
