I'll never forget the first time I ever heard this song. Me and my dad were taking the back roads from the town 15 miles away, home. Halfway through the drive, this song came on the radio. As soon as the beginning played, he looked at me (mind you, I was around 7 or 8) and he had a tear roll down his cheek. I never ever had seen my dad show any kind of sad emotions, as he prided himself on being such a macho dude. Anyways, fast forward about 2 years before he died, we heard this song on the radio again. And he told me the story. This song was the song that had broken up him and my mom. They had their issues, mainly her with the drugs and alcohol. But he told me, he spent the night with me and her. We all layed in bed. They agreed to move along with their lives. My dad listened to this song quite often at the time, and he told me how that was the hardest decision he ever had to make in his life. He raised me to be a pretty good man I would hope to think. And I have him to thank. History repeats itself. And I went through basically the same thing. But I have my son with me, and I've been able to start a new family with him. And so this song, will hold significant meaning and value to me forever. I want this song played at my funeral. If you read this far, thank you for taking the time to read a bit about a strangers life. Much love to all of you.. and yeah.. i might have a few tears myself right now

I don't think your story about your father was long at all. I'm sorry you had to go through that and your mom was an addict but I can see you've grown from the past nightmares of those old days. I thank you for sharing and by the way, we aren't really strangers if you touch someone else and that my friend you did. May you always have happiness and remember, life's too short for regrets so I'll just say,.......Until & God Bless you friend ...

Ironically, I heard this fav laying out on a picnic blanket w my mom (and her date), and my l'il sis on the Grant Park Bandshell Lawn; some college-aged couples next to us had a radio with them, and this song came on. The Chicago Symphony was about to deliver Beethoven's Ninth, so the packed lawn was waiting in the sultry twighlight. The old Standard Oil sign was lighting up with a weird sync, complimented by the tune on the radio. I was 10 years old, too, and the 'stream of consciousness' left an indelible impression. I think the song eludes to NYC, maybe😅

Last night I attended a funeral for a friend who took his life. The last time I saw him was at a funeral for another friends father. It was obvious he was no longer the same person I had come to know. I knew he was unhappy in his marriage and being dominated. This song comes to mind when I look back on all of this and can’t help but cry. We never know the internal battles being waged within those we love unless they let us in. When they don’t it leaves a hurt that feels like a black hole in your heart. Good bye Brian, & God bless you; may you find peace and love in God’s heavenly domain.

What a tragedy it would be not to feel a song like this one so powerfully that you cry just from the sheer beauty of it. When he says 'I would of walked to the deep end of a river' I now know what he was talking about. I love like that. With abandon. But he finally realized that he could be a friend to himself. That's what took me a lifetime of experience to appreciate because this beautifully haunting song was always playing in the background of my life. I always wondered when he'd explain who this 'someone' was who saved his life. 🤷🏻♂️ It is powerful now to realize who it was..him ❤️

It's the story of Elton's being dragged toward marriage just as his career seemed ready to progress. He managed to break off the engagement and go on with his career. After he sings "Someone saved my life tonight", he sings "Sugar Bear." "Sugar Bear" was the nickname of a close friend of his, one who encouraged him to break off the engagement and stick with his music.

With a powerful piano, a voice that goes from fear to triumph, high-flying literary lyrics, John takes us on a tense tale from doom to redemption. Not to be THAT person but this song was written by Bernie Taupin. He collaborated on almost all of Elton John's songs as the lyricist with Elton writing the music. Possibly the best songwriting duo ever.
@kaytownes591224 күн бұрын
@@mathewfullerton8577 true, but this is one of the few songs Bernie wrote ABOUT Elton. He was engaged to a witch of a woman according to Taupin, to the point that Elton had a haphazard attempt at suicide long before the one we all know about to get out of the relationship. That's how this song was written, so this one is deeply personal to Elton himself, because it's truly one of the rare songs about him.

The older you get, the more these songs begin to make sense. I went through two breakups in the same year. The first one was amicable. The other less so. The second relationship made me unhappy. She ended up leaving me for someone she met online. She still wanted me as a friend, but then started criticizing and blaming me for everything that went wrong in the relationship. I decided to keep going forward realizing that while I loved her and cared a lot about her, she was never going to change, that I would always just be some guy she would lean on when times were rough, but was never there for me when I needed her. She would always judge me, but I could never say anything about her. She would insist on me seeing things her way, but never be open to seeing things my way. I realized also that hating her and her husband and being bitter about it was not going to help me either. This song helps me move on and realize that I'm free and so is she.

Long live the 70's. I turned 14 in March of 1970. Was the greatest time of my life. Everyday i hear a song that brings back a memory. If time travel is ever invented in what's left of my life I'm so outta here. I'd do it all again, and i don't need to know what i know now. There's a couple mistakes i made I'd like to avoid but even WITH them I'd still do it again.

I had every album that I saved my meager allowance for. This particular song goes to the depths of my entire being, moves my soul in a way I can't explain. Moves me to tears to this very DAY!! MUSICAL GENIUS' HANDS DOWN. Can't wait to see the farewell tour. Thank you Elton John and band for a lifetime of the best music. Respect and reverence aren't good enough words.

I am an old fart, 62 years old. I saw a documentary decades ago about Elton, and parts of this song are autobiographical. He was engaged to be married to a high society girl, maybe even a "dominating queen" as he sings in the song. When one day he realizes that he cannot go through with it, because he would have been very unhappy. "Freedom whispered in my ear ...." And his life, as well as the lives of all of us who love his music, were changed for the better forever.

Your not old
@ehjfan46254 жыл бұрын
Yes, this song is autobiographical. The producer wanted Elton to push harder vocally rather than focusing on the words. As soon as someone told him what the song was about, he relented. He further honoured the sentiment by not embellishing the song too much. The result is uniquely beautiful and heartfelt. And don't sell yourself short, "old" friend. I enjoyed reading your thoughtful comments. 🌞

I relate to this song as someone who came within an inch of killing myself one time. It wasn’t over a relationship, and another person didn’t save my life, but the song is still very powerful with its message. Elton is grateful to still be alive, and so am I. an unbelievably clever song - lyrically of course it tells a tragic and heart warming story, and musically it is enigmatic and elusive. It's amazing!
@CocoWantsACracker6 жыл бұрын
The story told is the one thing that really puts me off when it was explained to me (during a TV interview with the person involved) that this song is about/against the woman who was engaged to be married to Elton John before he even assumed his stage name and persona. I mean: if you are homosexual, being caught in a male-female bond of marriage is not a good thing, but although you can blame society for pushing you in that direction, you should not blame a woman who fell in love with you, unaware of your sexual preferences, and who wants to spend her life with you. Of course, a story has two sides, but even if half of the other person's story as she presented it ("Suddenly he was gone and he never talked to me again; he just wrote this song about it, which is still very painful today, because I had no idea what was going on.") is true, I think this is a song that - lyric-wise - should not be. It is a song that executes revenge rather than emphasise freedom. Sorry if this ruins anybody's appreciation of the lyrics as it did for me (before I knew this, I really loved the song and the lyrics), but I feel it is only fair to present this side of the information about this song as well for the sake of completeness.

In my opinion, this is the single greatest song ever written and performed. An absolute masterpiece of sheer perfection. Not only musically, but because this song does, extremely well, what only a few others have been able to do before. Which is that it speaks to the listener personally. Every person who has ever listened to this song can relate to the words and apply the words to their own lives. We all feel as if this song is being sung directly to us, about our lives. Very few songs can evoke the kind of involvement and emotion that this song has done and continues to do to this day. This is the greatest song of all time - at least in my opinion.

This song is so POWERFUL and AUTHENTIC . . . I just know this by intuition. One can feel it. Probably Elton John's best song ever because it is so deeply real and thus expressed as the most noble form of art: personal experience of the deepest consequences accurately reprocessed and expressed via art. Sublime and an affirmation of humanity's divine essence potentiality as a realization.

In his youth Elton was engaged and one night very drunk he told a friend he was contemplating suicide by hanging himself. He told his friend that he felt trapped and didnt want a family life he wanted to be a singer and make music more than anything. His friend leaned over and whispered, Youre a butterfly and Butterflys are free to fly! That evening Elton broke the engagement and pursued his dreams. Bernie Taupin, Eltons room mate at the time wrote this song Eltons good friend was nick named Sugar Bear. In many subsequent interviews Elton has said Sugar Bear saved his life! Pretty Damn Cool....
