There was a great person named Martin Booth who helped keep the Turing museum open in the uk, they were trying to close it but because of him the museum is still around. I just wanted to mention this as he is no longer with us and is a huge reason the museum stayed open.

that's low-key what sucks about the world is you have to fight to keep things alive but eventually we all will die and all we did was delay the inevitable save one generation to make it worse for the next?

There's something so wonderfully poetic about him getting caught doing algebra instead of a divinity lesson, as if he was following a different form of divinity. On the nose, I know, but it perfectly encapsulates his future work and legacy

It was standard fare , the Greek would've been classical Greek. The order of importance was French followed by Latin then Greek then German. Depending on school facilities available , these subjects might be pruned back to only French and Latin though . English studies was kinda different category for an English speaking education system and included alotta clear thinking and reasoning exercises in later years . It's only in my later years I understand why .

I think that before The Imitation Game was made, he was really only dearly beloved by us gay nerds. Of course, a lot of very cool hetrosexual nerds loved him too and we owe them a huge thanks for helping keep his memory alive. I'm very glad that his genius has been widely acknowledged by society at large now. Certainly when I was a teenager, the idea of a gay man having such a huge impact on the war, computing, and helping his country was a huge inspiration.

Before anyone criticizes the teachers criticizing the handwriting too harshly... As I former teacher, one of the things I hated was having to write 200 of these comments, each in a very small space, in a very short time period.

Finished school at end of last millenium. Funny how teachers remarks are so similar to what they used to be during Turings time. But I got the feeling my teachers were simply more incompetent than decades ago, having diccifulties to grasp even simple mathematical concepts, while my english teacher gave me bad grades because he thought I was inventing words (he just didn't know some of my vocabulary) and my new ethics teacher gave me 0 points in my 12th year, while I had perfect scores the year before that. School is not meant to help children develop their skills, but more to produce industry workers whose predetermined capabilities may be measured and compared with the grade scores. I bet a lot of gifted children just resignate and give up at some point, being scolded for bad handwriting and slow speed solving simple calculus, while their abilities in solving multispacial geometry problems or similarly advanced interests get completely ignored and frowned upon.

I'm almost leaning toward being thankful for this lady for being the steward of the Turing memorabilia but her thinking that they would be safer with her was probably wrong. Those items were put in jeopardy being toted across the world like that. If few people came to see the Turing items then they were secure in their obscurity. We'll never know if everything taken was returned. I learned of Alan Turing in the early '70s and never would have thought that there were unsecured items just laying around like that waiting to be TWOCed.

12:37 I took a shot at making out these words: "I can forgive his writing, though it is the worst I have ever seen, & I try to view tolerantly his unswerving (?) inexactitude and slipshod, dirty, work, inconsistent though such inexactitude is in a utilitarian; but I cannot forgive the stupidity of his attitude towards name discussion on the New Testament." As someone who has spent hundreds of hours reading handwriting from the 18th through 20th century, I completely agree that this teacher's writing is also some of the worst I have seen. Just as ironic as you pointed out Tibees.
@Octa9on
@Octa9on 8 ай бұрын
I believe you're almost entirely correct. I agree on "unswerving" even though the U looks different from other Us in the text, and the G at the end is fragmentary and looks like an oversized comma. I believe it's "towards SANE discussion" though. the word-initial Ss in the text are tall and fairly linear, and can have a point at the bottom: look at the S in "such" above

I wonder if the teacher was either Scottish or from another part of the country, because it sounds like a non-standard pronunciation in written form.

"tolerantly his undeserving", perhaps? Seems wrong, the last three characters are oin, the first are und, to my eye. Can't find a word that fits. I do find it amusing that the teacher who is critiquing his handwriting is almost unreadable, tho - and he harps on about inexactitude, twice, too.

Between Sherborne failing to adequately catalogue this material, and Julie Schwinghamer stealing it, we may never know how much had vanished before it was returned. Alan Turing was treated poorly by most of those around him during his life, and the pattern has continued since his death.

It is an unfortunate reality that the very institutions responsible for Alan Turing's demise are the ones that now oversee the archives commemorating his work. A visit to Bletchley Park reveals a disconcerting narrative: Turing is posthumously lauded as a national hero, a status conveniently amplified by the global significance of computer technology. This portrayal serves a broader agenda, one that perpetuates the notion of British exceptionalism-a narrative that is, to put it mildly, problematic. The British have a long-standing tendency to emphasize their own greatness, often at the expense of confronting the darker aspects of their history. Rather than acknowledging past wrongs and giving due respect to the victims, the national narrative is frequently rewritten to sustain the illusion of unbroken greatness. In this context, Winston Churchill's reputation is particularly noteworthy. Despite his morally questionable actions, particularly in relation to Turing, he continues to be venerated as one of the greatest Britons to have ever lived. Thus, the historical record, as it is commonly presented, serves not just as a testament to the past, but also as a tool for shaping present-day perceptions and beliefs.
