High temperature during breeding season tends to make open cows.. not only does the bull not want to do his job, but the cows that are bred just before an excessive heat spell will slip or absorb the fetus.. last year was good for it! We have 7 left to calve, all bred a few times.. all just before a hot spell. The gaps in our calving season align with the heat. Congratulations on the family addition!! To bad on your open cows hopefully your luck is better this year. I like your new heifers though I’ve always had a soft spot for white face and broccol face cows. Good video thanks for sharing!

Would it cost much to hire a second bull for at least 3 weeks at the start of breeding season, if 1 bull is not working the other 1 might be. Or can you swap your bull with another ranchers bull after 3 weeks.

Usually ranchers don’t swap bulls. They are very expensive and you don’t want anyone hurting your bull. We buy bulls that we feel are good off of their EPD’s. Running more than one bull, in Mitchell’s case, with 20 cows is costly too. It was just some bad luck. Hope that doesn’t happen again with his cows. Thanks
