IZ was a national treasure to his people. And for a good reason, he was such a delight and had the voice of an angel and he did so much for the Hawaiian people, their rights, and independence. When he died the Hawaiian flag at the state capitol building was flown at half-mast, he's one of only 3 people at the time to be honored like that in Hawaii, and the only one of those 3 that wasn't a member of government. I think some commenters said it already but around 10k people attended his funeral to celebrate his life!

The voice of an angel. A gentle giant. One cannot see him without processing his size, but all of us wrestle with our hidden demons in our own way. If he used food to cope, well, so be it. His voice is a voice of peace, a voice that brought joy to everyone he knew, and a voice that the world badly needs more of. Most of us will never touch so many in our lives. RIP Iz.

@@hmichaelr1 That's very true. Don Ho is an icon, though he is one of many iconic singers and groups from Hawaii, among those icon you could include Moe Keale, The Brothers Cazimero, Cecilio & Kapono, Ledward Kaapana, Kealiʻi Reichel, Kalapana, Ohta-san, Sam Ku West, Na Leo Pilimehana,, Mākaha Sons of Niʻihau (of which IZ was a founding member) and so many others. I think Hawaiian music needs to be appreciated more outside of the islands so it can spread the Aloha spirit around the world. :)

Yeah - I've always hated hearing uke's played like guitars, instead of the way old timers like GEORGE FORMBY used to play - That's when ukelele's come alive. But that takes skill. I make an exception in this guy's case because my best friend played this song to her unborn child all through her pregnancy (how - i don't know!) and Millie came out the most beautiful little girl imaginable. We had to listen to it 5 times a day during the first year or so of her life outside the womb - so I grew to like it I guess! I think I prefer other versions to be truthful - but I've only just realized this guy died - I should have known - (how - I don't know!) - Sad to hear that though.

After I got out of the army I went to work for a Power Contractor. On September 11th 1992 Hurricane INIKI hit the Island of KAUAI, HAWAII. It devistated that Island. I was on that Island for 3 years of rebuilding the Telephone and Power. This guy IZ and Bonnie Raitt, Graham Nash,David Crosby, and other's gave the worker's a free Concert. It was a great time in my life and this guy IZ does the best job on this song. 🌴🌄🐊 I felt so good being able to help the people of Kauai. That was a Cat. 5 hurricane. Sustained winds of 180 and gust of 227. I used to sing his ukulele version on kareoke night. Wow you guy's brought back a flood of great memories for this young 61 year old. Hope every Veteran had a great Veteran's day. Only way I can explain Kauai is it's like Fantasia. There are big huge Rainbows and little bitty one's. When I first got there everything was brown and dead from the salt water. Houses completely blown away. And Power lines and Telephone cable's were all on the ground. But I was there long enough that flora and fawns bounced back the first year. It was Da Kine for sho.

The American Film Institute ranked this the number one movie song of all time. Israel Kamakawiwoʻole gave us the definitive version of it.

The legend he woke up at 3:00 a.m., and this song just came to him, so he called a friend who had a recording studio, went in; and recorded this in one take.

This song always makes me cry, as I first heard it when Dr.Greene died on the TV show ER, and then learning about IZ and him being dead makes the song even sadder for me.

Sometimes you hear a version of a song that hits you a certain way...and you can't explain why or even understand where those feelings are coming from. this version does that to me.

THIS IS MY FAVOURITE CHANNEL BY A MILE. You're providing a great public service. It perks me up seeing about 5 songs a day played by you with a fresh perspective - There's usually at least one that has special significance to me. It helps to remind me just how much music I've enjoyed over the years and how thankful I should be to all those people. I've tried to make my own music - REALLY tried - and REALLY failed - Because it's REALLY hard if you're not one of the 0.1% of people with genuine talent. But it's wonderful listening to the work of those 0.1% of people who do have such talent - and a measure of luck too, I dare say - but mainly talent. ANYWAY, thank you for your service. Tis appreciate by most people here, I'm sure.
