The wonderful thing about Ellen Greene is that amidst the utter campiness of it all, she makes you feel real emotion. And I have seldom heard a singer with such amazing breath control.

Ellen Greene as Audrey... Wow....here is the breakdown folks.. There was the rock and roll moan like timbre of the head voice. Then the lifted neck to raise the larynx ( usually a awful thing in free singing) all combined with the platinum blonde Moll look and whiney spoken voice of Audrey -created something special in Greene's performance. A sort of naturalism and affected 1950's rock and roll pining that really was part of Menkens vision. The composition is almost a lullaby. A feminine doll like world sparkling with far away yearnings of a middle class homestead typical of the popular American 1950's idyll are in the lyrics. The entire effect is haunting and completely relatable to most theatre goers. An attempt to break free of a battered sado/masochistic gone wrong relationship is also underlined in the parallel unspoken lyrics. To keep it "plastic on the furniture to keep it neat and clean." Naturally there are many other people who could/have sing/sung this entire number in a more clean way with less veering off of tone or a more solid uninformed voice. However no one ever reached the success/believability of this character better than Ellen Greene. This role was originally created for the bright voiced belter Faith Prince ( Later, to acclaim the 1992 Adelaide in Guys & Dolls on B'way) who has a more well rounded technique, but could not get out of a previous running contract. Greene went on and simply owned this role for years. It is evident to her transfer to the Hollywood version, which was rare as Hollyweird often dubs over actors or simply overlooks the originators of the role on stage etc. The tear on her face is part of her expression in this role. She had the same tears literally over 20 years in another performance. Amazing. I don't know a grown man who does not feel the vulnerability in this song when sung . Nor a woman who does not resonate with it's message. Knowing that life can be so cruel. It is one of those special musical theatre moments in American history that stay with you. The entire musical is a fascinating piece. And has lots of messages peppered throughout, dotted alongside very "Doo -Wop" plucky score.

well said....I have struggled to say exactly what makes this performance so good but you pin point it very keenly. On the surface its something that I would not like unsubtle, over the top, even mannered. But, she makes it work and I remember she did it live too. The Cry "Far from Skid Row" is most poignant.

Fascinating! But how does she manage to switch between the different voices (head voice, chest voice etc?) She goes from a "little girl" voice to a powerful belt literally between words ("and I look like...Donna REED!"), for example. What an intriguing technique, which must be tricky to pull off without missing notes or sounding strained.

Whether it be the SDA's in 1983, Hey Mr. Producer! in 1998, or at the Little Shop of Horrors Encore in 2015, Ellen Greene proves that she has owned this role for more than 30 years. I don't think I can recall any other role that has been claimed so exclusively as Ms. Greene's portrayal of Audrey. She is simply perfection as the broken, battered and beautiful woman who steals Seymour's heart. The character calls for so much emotion, wit and timing, and no-one has better provided that unique mixture before or since. Ellen Greene is simply peerless. Thank you for posting this absolute gem!!

Her dream is campy, totally stupid and superficial, and the lyrics convey it in a parodic way. But the music and her acting manages to put you in a position where you're totally standing up for her. You really want her dreams to come true.

I don't think so, I think Audrey wants a simple life, a life that a lot of people have, but she will never get it. She doesn't want anything fancy, just a simple life which makes it tragic...
@michaeltoney2277

It’s not superficial at all. She doesn’t want things; she wants a secure life and love. Everyone wants it. She’s just describing it as a suburban utopia because of the camp of the show. To her those items mean wealth and security.

I think the whole point is that for those so far below the poverty line, like Audrey, even the sterile and shalow life of a lower middle class margarine ad family sounds as magical and unreachable as if she were dreaming with living in ice cream castles and riding flying horses. The fact is that, for many and due to no fault of their own, even the most bare bones version of the American dream can only ever be a dream, specially if you are starting from "Skid Row" level. In spite of her being a sweet and kind person, her dream life is cheap, ordinary and boring and yet completely beyond her reach, and that makes it all the more tragic.

It's amazing how she is able to make you feel pity, joy, hope, despair, happiness, sadness, & love, plus tears of joy all within 3 minutes. If such a thing were possible I would become her guardian angel and never let anything bad happen to her ever again. I guess technically that means I felt fear also. And laughter Wow!! Amazing song and singing. When the song is, purposefully, a parody of suburban middle-class lifestyle (of the 60s?), Green poignantly elevates it to sublimity that is unreachable to Audrey. The power of the song and singing is overwhelming.
