This was a MG line till Veraval. I have travelled extensively till 1997. Girnar Express was the only train where they would provide you with bedding (like in the AC these days) in sleeper class as well when you book your tickets. The legend is that Mahatma Gandhi travelled on this train/section (to Porbandar probably) and the system continued even in 90s. Jetalsar used to be our dinner station (going from Veraval) and passengers were served food in the Vegetarian Hall at Jetalsar. The station used to be filled with MG Steam Engines at that point. There was no line to Somnath at that time. Only two trains from Ahmedabad, Somnath Mail and Girnar Express. Keshod had an airport at that time to cater to executives of the various cement plants/ GHCL/Indian Rayon located in Junagadh/Amreli Districts.

MG trains were from Ahmedabad not Rajkot, upto Veraval. Delhi Ahmedabad line too was in MG. We had to change at AHMEDABAD if coming from Mumbai or Delhi

Avinash, I had visited Somnath with my wife and daughter at the year 2005.My daughter was a small child then.There was no Somnath Rly station. The BG track used to end at Veraval JN. at that time. From Veraval we took an autorickshaw to Somnath nearly 6km away. Before BG line, the MG track from Ahmedabad used to end at Veraval but through a different route, which was via Botad JN.,Dhola JN. and DhasaJN.route.In fact that was the era before 2000,when most of Gujarat and other parts of India were under full MG route.

Very nice. Bought back faint memories. Back in the mid-70s we lived in Rajkot. Then the Saurashtra Mail used to run only till Viramgam. I was in primary school then. So am assuming that it was metre gauge beyond Viramgam to Rajkot etc. So whenever we used to go to Mumbai we used to take a passenger to Viramgam (steam hauled of course), change trains and then to Mumbai. I think electrification was only from Vadodara to Mumbai. I think only just before we moved from Rajkot to Kolhapur that the line was converted to BG. I may be wrong. Funnily, even KOP was metre gauge just till before we moved over there. it was BG only till Miraj Jn. So after regularly using the Saurashtra Mail, we shifted to the Mahalakshmi Express, and the occasional journey by Sahyadri if tickets were not available in the former, for our trips to Mumbai. And to carry forward the MG to BG kahani, we then moved to Indore. Guess what just before we moved to Indore, a BG line And we took the Avantika Exp the day after its inaugural run, with the festoons and flowers still adorning it.

i am from rajkot....earlier veraval was the last terminal for said section ,, but after BG it is extended upto somnath & now somnath is terminal station in this section. Further Mountain @ junagadh is is known as GIRNAR which is very famous & many pilgrimages visit to this mountain in december to circle around it.

Brother if you travel Somanath again in Next two years then you can see electrified train line because right now they are extend rajkot to all the way Veraval all electrified service.

Both Ines between Rajkot to Veraval are very Old. Main line converted to broad Guage in 2002.

Also the meter gauge line is same from jetalsar to Veraval as present broad gauge. The MG line from jetalsar to Ahmedabad was via Dhola, Botad and not via rajkot. (For Girnar Exp and Somnath mail)

Somnath railway station was built after broad gauge. Before it veravalbis the terminal station. Now somnath is terminal station

Electrirication is good. In terms of efficiency, economy and the environment. I understand that you like uniterrupted views and the sounds of diesel engines. But I think the attitude towards electrification needs to change, especially of railfans who influence views of the public about the railways.
