I’d be intoxicated too if I had done something so damn heinous, like doing that to my mom! Drunk driving is the very least of his worries. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, maybe not even a year from now, but one day he’ll deeply regret doing this to his mom, probably at a point when he’s down and needs someone in his corner and there’s no one. That’s probably when he miss her.
