I'll never forget the day my aunt came home and heard it on the news and mentioned it to us as teens at the time. Broke her heart because she loved Bob Crane as an actor on that show. Broke my heart too to know someone did that to him and his murderer was never brought to justice to pay with their own life, as they should. I love that show and its awfully sad and gut wrenching to know someone took his life.

I did the photo analysis on the case and was an expert witness. I interviewed Carpenter twice. There were no other solid suspects. It was Carpenter, and everyone knew it. As you know, his life quickly fell apart after the acquittal.

I have to agree. Put yourself in Carpenter's place. He was friends for a while with Crane. He was getting women he wouldn't otherwise get. Then probably on the night or leading up to the night of Crane's murder. He told Carpenter he has to stop being a tag along. Crane wanted to try to get his career back on track. This would make most people mad, if your best friend told you to F-off. Now no more women and fame of being "Hogan's best friend" (Carpenter would feel like he was used for the making of video's and teaching Crane about the video equipment. Now that Hogan knew how to operate the equipment, in Carpenter's mind, Crane didn't need him anymore and felt betrayed). Hence the cord around the neck. In Carpenter's mind it would be "Here take this and cord and connect it!"

I don't think Carpenter did it but he knew who did or at the very least knew it was going to happen. There is too much circumstantial evidence. For one thing, Carpenter would always schedule his business trips so that he would be in the same city as the one Crane would be performing at and Carpenter would stay with Crane in the latter's apartment. But this time, Carpenter stayed in a hotel. Also, Crane had made arrangements to take Carpenter to the airport on the morning of the murder but Carpenter went to the airport on his own without first going to Crane's apartment. After Carpenter got home, he called the apartment but a detective, Ron Dean, answered the phone; Carpenter never asked Dean why the cops were there. And then he called Bob Jr ostensibly "just to chat" (something Bob Jr. insists Carpenter had never done previously). And since Crane's apartment had been burglarized in another city, he had become very security-conscious and always locked his doors and windows at night but this time the cops discovered that the door was left unlocked. Maybe Carpenter told Crane that the former would stop by before he left town to pick something up in the apartment and convinced Crane not to lock the door, maybe so that Carpenter would not disturb Crane while the latter was sleeping (Carpenter's swimsuit was found in Crane's apartment during the investigation; maybe that's what Carpenter told Crane that the former was going there to retrieve but never did). To be sure, all this would not have proven that Carpenter committed the murder but as I said, it may show that Carpenter knew that Crane would be murdered that night.

@@princeofcupspoc9073 even the detectives said it was John carpenter. Don't need to see the police records, all this is public knowledge now, it's all been out in the open for years. The circumstancial evidence stacks up really high pointing to carpenter... he more than likely did do it.

Well, he was cheating on his second wife, sure she was not happy about it, does not mean she killed him. I believe Carpenter did it out of jealousy of Crane's fame and Crane dismissing him. From what I read Crane was trying to straighten his life out.

About 13 years ago, I had a brief email correspondence with Crane's second son Scott (who was the only child he had with Sigrid) and he denied that his parents were contemplating divorce and that his mom knew what sort of man Bob Crane was (since he was having an affair with her while still married to his first wife) and she more or less accepted it. Scott even told me that his mom never remarried after Bob died and wore her wedding band for the rest of her life. I asked him about the Robert Graysmith (the same man who wrote Zodiac) book about the Crane murder and Scott insists that this book was full of inaccuracies. No, Scott did not try to idealize his father or attempt to deny the things he did but from what he said and from what I read independently about Sigrid Valdis, she does not sound like a person who would kill - or order the killing of - another person. Yes, she may have benefited financially but as Bob Jr said in this video, the money she ultimately got, while substantial for the late 70, was not a king's ransom. IMO, Carpenter either did it or knew who did. Dead men reveal no secrets.

He had a book coming out in March. From what I have read through the years, I have very little doubt that it was at least 2nd degree murder by John Carpenter.

John Carpenter did it. the Scottsdale police botched so much at the crime scene that key evidence was lost, compromised, or not even collected. Carpenter's rental car had blood smears in several places, which was the same type as Crane's (they didn't have DNA testing back then). when arrested in 1990, Carpenter called his wife and told her, "they finally got me." Although she denies his guilt, she quotes this exactly. Crane and Carpenter basically ran a small soft porn and kink video and photography, and Crane told several people that he was going to dump Carpenter because Carpenter was an idiot and was living off his association to both Crane and Richard Dawson. Carpenter had a notorious temper. He always stayed in Crane's apartment when they travelled, but this time he sought a separate place, but was definitely at Crane's place and even had a key.. His behavior the morning after the murder was very strange, and his interviews with police were cryptic. Detectives seemed more interested in the celebrity and his dark business than sealing the crime scene and so much evidence was missed and mishandled.

I too tend to believe that Carpenter did it, or at least perhaps hired someone to do it, or at least knew who did it. That having been said, I wouldn't put too much weight behind what he said to his wife, supposedly, "They finally got me", since that could just be a statement of exasperation, since he knew for many years, since 1978, that he was still the prime suspect. It's not necessarily an incriminating statement. Very sad case and I feel sorry for all his (Crane's) kids.

Just from what I've heard of the investigations, It's hard not to think Carpenter did it. His actions after the murder, his clothes still at Crane's apt where he was suppose to meet Crane so he could give him a ride to the air port but without warning decides to go him self. MY speculation is they went out to a club, Carpenter had an argument with Crane. Crane went home and Carpenter came over to crash the night since Crane was suppose to give Carpenter a ride to the air port. Some time in the night Carpenter got up clubbed him over the head and tied the cord around his neck as a message. He left in the early morning to fly out and when he got to where he was going called Crane so there was a phone record of him calling from somewhere else.

Crane was bedding so many women it's very possible he, sooner or later, came across a boyfriend/husband who found out and took revenge. The murderer looked like he wanted to bust Crane's head open, and then took delight in choking him with the cord. No, this crime was a revenge crime. The murderer was really angry.

I have said this many times. If the American authorities had have conducted a proper investigation in the first place we all wouldn't be sitting here making wild accusations. The only thing left I have to say on this is that if the evidence hadn't have been mishandled, or contaminated or whatever you wish to call it, it is very likely the culprit would be rotting in prison or already dead.

I personally think the reason this crime has gone unsolved for so long was because there was too much focus on the sexual part of Bob Crane's life. It may have played a factor, it may have not. People get murdered all the time for various different reasons, and they all have complex lives with lots of things going on in them. Sex could have been a motivator, but it could have also be financial, or just a robbery that went bad.

It was also believed that neo-Nazies were behind it. Hogan's Heroes was not exactly sympathetic to the 3rd Reich- at the end of each episode the Axis is not only defeated but humiliated and embarrassed as well...!

John Henry Carpenter did it or had someone do it for him, hands down. There is never a justified reason for murder, especially like this. He's paying dearly in the afterlife for this. For Bobby Crane to accuse his stepmother Patti of having something to do with it... it's your standard "you broke up my parents' marriage, I don't like you" case; she truly loved him, look at the last 30 years of her life, what she did to make sure she was buried by her husband, etc. And, yes, her son is his father's child - just look at him! Same eyes and mouth and jawline! RIP Col. Hogan

I remember hearing part of the Police report where it said that there wasn't any sign of a forced-entry. But I wondered about any Forced-exit because someone had to have known about the rear sliding window-doors and how the risk of being seen was lower than going back out the front door. Either someone was there and Bob went to bed and told the person let them self out when they leave, or he was expecting someone that had a key and was to wake him up once the person came in . It made no sense with the story that was given to the public , my gut tells me that 2 people may have been in on it just in case things went wrong at first and they had a Plan-B . Bob had to have been in a deep sleep because any person with a key would be taking a big risk coming in quietly because an Emergency Vehicle noise or local car crash could be heard while the door was open and prompt Bob to wake up . The person coming in would also have to know that nobody else was making a visit such as a another women for a quick fling.

Does Bobby not have a family of his own to focus on? Yes, it's terrible what happened to his dad - yes, he and his siblings deserve to get justice for their dad - BUT everyone involved is dead or very old. Scott Crane deserves to know what happened to his dad, too - but in the meantime, he is working to preserve his dad's memory and not holding a vendetta or crusade. Let it go, trust that the guilty party/parties will get justice in the afterlife, and do what your father never got the chance to fully do: spend time with and focus on your family.

Now no more women and fame of being "Hogan's best friend" (Carpenter would feel like he was used for the making of video's and teaching Crane about the video equipment.) Now that Hogan knew how to operate the equipment, in Carpenter's mind, Crane didn't need him anymore and felt betrayed). Hence the cord around the neck. In Carpenter's mind it would be "Here take this cord and connect it!" You have to take into account that John Carpenter had a bad temper. It probably ate at him.
