Tales of earthsea. I always watched it whenever I was sick to feel better and even sang with in the song if I felt good enough. Also since my grandpa died I feared death (a lot) so far as being afraid to fall asleep because I or someone else I loved could die while doing so. This movie saved me and I no longer fear death. I don't want to die and its still sad, but I have accepted it and don't fear it anymore

Oh, and me and my 2 year old watches Ronja as soon as it is on TV. I really like that too. It's a lot different from the old live action adaptation we have here in Sweden but it's great :D I only miss the part where Lovis forces Mattis out in the snow as well xD

Up on Poppy hill hands down. I did like Tales of earthsea but, I connected more with Poppy hill more. It seemed more calming, realistic and I really loved the music and backgrounds in it.

@@Stevem You guy's think there will be another Princess Mononoke movie sequel? Because it was a greatest movie of all time. And plus do you guy's think that Princess Mononoke is a Disney princess? Because princess mononoke is a part of Disney even though she's ghibli. San is a princess like a Disney princess and San's princess dress will look similar to Pocahontas princess dress from Pocahontas 2. Do you guy's agree with that idea?

@@shinmadd3517 it's not that bad, it's just not relatable for everyone, as it is based on his emotions. On what he felt with his family especially his father. The movie could be better? Yes. But Goro prioritized to relay a message to his father and to other parents, that being an absentee parent is not a good role model to your children. It's a Philosophical Film, yes many meanings can be derived in this film.

Kind of ironic that a guy who shaped the childhood of many children around the world was an absent father. But i guess that's just how it goes. I'm happy that Goro is finding his narrative voice and moving Ghibli forward and, hopefully, will keep the studio running for a few more decades at least

Erik Romão He mentions in his book that he wasn't proud of the fact but because he worked 6-7 days a week and was so dedicated to his films he left his wife to raise the children. Which was a bummer for her because she had to give up animating to do it

@@Stevem That sounds exactly like the Jiro character from "The Wind rises", when he is a workaholic and doesn't have much of a private life. Everything comes at a cost. You can't be the boss of the best anime studio and be around your family enough. Or you probably could, if you wanted to. It's sad.

Honestly , I feel that Gorō Miyazaki has received WAY too much unnecessary hate for his Ghibli films. From Up on Poppy Hill's design and animation development is actually spectacular and I believe that Gorō is trying his absolute best in his development as a director. And he already gets an earful from Hayao, how much longer should he suffer?!!!!

True dat, the only reason is cuz he's being compared again and again; as a film itself Tales of Earthsea is pretty bland but it isn't horrible. Hayao made flops in his early career too, Goro's legacy is only starting

On the surface, Goro drawings was incredibly astonishing. And I have to commend him for that, he indeed is a talented artist but not as a story director during his first movie. Ghibli is not only about beautiful drawings which Goro does incredibly great but about relatable characters with soul, with emotions, that is how it is. And Goros' first try falls incredibly short for.

I dont blame hayao. What the fuck was the kid doing. He had zero experience as an animator or director. He'd earlier decided he didnt want to follow his fathers career and then suddenly he decides hes going to direct a feature? I'm sure hayao would have been fine and proud if he'd started from the bottom and learnt his craft from the bottom upwards, but he never should have been offered the tales from earthsea directing gig and never should have accepted. I watched it on Netflix and it was just bland and soul less, like a ghibli film that was missing what made ghibli films so memorable. No wonder.

Such wasted potential, if his father would have dropped his pride and aided his son instead of sabotaging him just image what could have been accomplished. Miyazaki could have become an animation dynasty.

It's basically the same thing when a child try to make/experiment something but their parent stop them. no matter how old they have become, as long you try to prevent your child of doing something, that will hurt their feelings to you and became unmotivated. As a parent, you only need to watch them from the sideline. especially when they have become full grown adult.

I think i agree with Hayao, it’s okay for a first film though. Im sorry that they had a strained relationship, but there is a difference between emotion and professional. Hayao has literally been a huge figure, but he is also realistic about how there would be a huge competition especially in Japan.

in my opinion, goro did a fantastic job with up on poppy hill. it's such a beautiful and peaceful movie, just look at the scene in the club house when umi and shou are busy doing their thing while you can see the dirty and messy room they're in, i love it it's so wonderfully relaxing. and that soundtrack omg...

Goro's biggest problem is his father. Doesnt seem like a bad director, but yous howed that he gets constant pressure over him. Goro would need to win five straight Oscars, make 3 movies a year uren ten years and create hypersensorial animation just so people could even think that someday can be at his father's level.

It would not be easy, though I hope if he does his own thing in 3D, as he was implying then he could paint his own legacy enough that people don't keep comparing them. However knowing how it goes even with his contemporaries (Hosada and Shinkai) that's not going to happen.

While Whispers of the Heart is my favorite Studio Ghibli film myself, there is just something about at least Earthsea and Poppy Hill that strikes a cord in me no other Studio Ghibli film has.... oh I know why, my own dad was either absent or overbearing...

Hayao had been working in animation for over 20 years before he ever directed his own movie, doing storyboarding, key animating, TV show direction, overseeing the evolution of the craft from practically its inception. Goro OTOH jumped straight into directing completely with no substantive formative experience whatsoever, it was impossible for him to have the same background and experience his father had. I'm surprised anyone gave him reins to direct a film when he was completely unproven and hadn't personally produced anything, it's a wonder that his films even turned out mediocre TBH.

RedZeshinX it was all on Suzuki, he has a very old school mentality. He likes the idea of a son doing the same craft as his father and he convinced Goro to direct the film. Goro was so naive he just went with it, but yes it does seem like a decision made from nepotism opposed to earning it. Lucky Goro did have some talent or project could of been a major disaster

@@afafreen It wasn't Hayao's decision basically it was Suzuki who chose it for nepotism esc reasons, but as the years have went by I think Goro has made himself into a fine director and I hope his future 3D project goes well

When I first watched From Up On Poppy Hill- I was slightly disappointed, it was too laid back for a Ghibli Film. But when I rewatched it knowing that Goro was the director, I actually fell in love with it. It’s different; a subtly beautiful film in its very own way. Kind of a new side to Ghibli. Goro is indeed gifted and has a distinct way of telling stories- plus, this must be said; his musical taste is rather exceptional. Tales from Earthsea was a total mess, but I still like it somehow. It’s weird, but I like it.

I hope he finds his way, while there's a lot to like about Ronia I still feel in my heart, it would have been better if it were shorted and 2d. So if he is going to keep making 3D they better start looking fantastic.

@@dreamingblue3939 The Ghibli animators are extremely talented the best in the world, they can take Goro's storyboards and do anything with them. I'll have to watch the whole thing because I didn't see it yet. I just didn't want to, I was like Miyazaki, I looked at the faces and saw things wrong with them and figured the pacing would be off and timing. I'm sure the music was great and over all art from the studio. The thing is, Goro is not an animator, and he never proved himself to be one, or a great one. We need to see if he can learn, and it takes years of hard work. Miyazaki spent years flipping pages and animating, and he is one of the best, Goro just came in and was handed the very top job above all the other Ghibli animators based on nothing he had done and everything his father had done, its quite frankly insane.

@@Stevem Somebody should ask Goro to do some of the animated sequences from scratch without help, and see how they look, guaranteed he could not do it at all. Miyazaki animated some of the greatest scenes in all his movies, he wasn't just great at story boarding, he was great at animating, people don't realize this.

@@counterstrike89 it's a collaborative effort ,Miyazaki did key animation but he didn't paint the cels or put in in-betweens. Even so people like isao takahata couldn't draw it's not a necessary skill for the director

Me too. It's definitely flawed, but I can't help but love it. Though it's missing the warmth and heart of Hayao's movies, I think it's the combination of it's mystery, animation, atmosphere, and music that lets me enjoy it.

I know that Tales from Earthsea is considered the black sheep of Studio Ghibli's films, but I honestly never understood why it gets so much hate. Is it as good as some of the other Ghibli films? No. But so what? When judging it alone, by it's own merits, it's a totally fine film. I saw it for the first time last year and I really enjoyed it.

I honestly love the movie. I love how different it is from other Ghibli movies. I know the pacing for near the ending is abit weird, but this is a few of Ghibli story that makes me feel I want to cry. The mc relationship with the wizard is very lovely. I literary see the wizard as his surrogate father. So when he died... OH GOD IT HURTS SO MUCH. I really feel sorry for the mc when that happen.

Exactly its 'fine'. Studio Ghibli is not known for producing films that are described as 'fine'. It creates masterpieces in japanese animation. The likes of Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and Nausicaa valley of the wind. Up against them you can easily see why earthsea is a black mark on the studio. It's not up to standard.

I think that Hayao Miyazaki's movies are far superior (or some of them); however, in my opinion, Tales of Earthsea is better than other Ghibli movies, such as Only Yesterday.

Hayao might have been against Goro directing because he lacked experience, when he himself worked his way up to be one of the most respected animation directors. If Goro wanted to start at entry-level maybe Hayao wouldn't have been against it. Ghibli studio's name would be at stake after all. However, instead of sabotaging his son's project, he should've been more supportive or at least first tried to convince him or the board to have him start as an apprentice or staff before giving him the director's chair. In any case, I hope their relationship has become better. I now find it hard to rewatch Miyazaki films and enjoy them when at the back of my mind, I'm thinking these wonderful movies were made at a cost of one boy growing up being neglected by a constantly absent father who is also his biggest critic.

Yeah and not only Hayao, but a bunch of shit heads attack Goro just because of Tales from Earthsea in their eyes was awful. But, I feel I'm the only one who enjoyed Tales from Earthsea. I wished Goro did Pippi Longstocking, then again the shit heads will attack again.

I wasnt a huge fan of the Earthsea movie when I first saw it, but knowing about the history behind it makes me a little more empathetic to it. And I genuinely love Poppy Hill, I love all of Ghibli settings, but I really love the way Poppy Feels alive. I respect Goro, and even though I am not a huge fan of 3D animation, that Tv show actually looks really good!

Ours fathers are better people towards others outside of family. My father was everyones best friend and offered awesome advice so im told. But sadly his children will never seen a glimpse of that person

I enjoyed Earthsea quite a bit on its own merits. Ultimately, Goro will be best served by continuing to pursue themes and ideas that his father wouldn't. And someday when their legacies are re-examined, we may find ourselves surprised at just how great Goro became in his own right.

If he ever made Earthsea 2, it would have started with Aaron getting treatment for the murder of his father and later his reunion with Teru. Cob is a hybrid of Orochimaru and Äs Nödt.

I find that I keep coming back to Poppy Hill around the summer holidays. It's such an easy feel good movie albeit with some tearjerking moments sprinkled in-between. The soundtrack alone is just a big reason to watch it!

Tales of Earth Sea is one of my favorite Movies. When I saw it I didn't knew who made it nor did I realize the connection to Ghibli.. for me it was just a good movie.. hearing this.. makes me kinda sad but also happy...

I watched Up On Poppy Hill without any bias nor knowledge on who the director was so I thoroughly enjoyed it. Sure it wasn’t as exciting and fantastical but it was endearing and touching. I’d argue it’s just as good as Miyazaki’s films so he deserves a lot of credit. My only issue is the ending because I wanted to see what happened to the couple lol

Hayao Miyazaki is treated like a god. People will always look at his opinion and tend to agree, even if his criticism might include emotions not really related to what Goro produced because of his inability of communicating with his son.

I don't always agree with Miyazaki, and often find him to be a grouchy old man, but I do deeply respect his skill and craft because he is one of the greatest animators of all time. The fact that he's such a grouchy old man, and was an absent and neglectful father, strengthens the power of his movies. They have so much heart and soul with a radiant light of pure goodness and pure-heartedness shining through, and are often some of the cutest shit ever put on screen. I really hope Goro can grow into his own path and leave his own touch on animation.

Preach. People attacking Goro and putting Hayao in a pedestal are really wack. Hayao has some flops under his belt too, he isn't some god and Goro, if given the chance, could do great things in the future. It must be a hard situation for both father and son.

The whole thing with Goro taking a story and adapting it in his own way, and getting his arse handed to him by several people for doing so, including his own father, is quite ironic seeing Hayao did the *EXACT* same thing with Howl's Moving Castle. Yet because it has Hayao's name on it, then it's a "masterpiece"... Howl's, while it being a good and beautiful film, it strays *SO* far from the original story by Dianne Wynne Jones, that it is basically a totally different story. The only things in the film that sticks to the original story is some of the names, the love story between Howl and Sophie, that Sophie gets cursed, that she has a sister in a bakery and that Sophie works in the hatshop. Hayao basically changed *EVERYTHING* else and left details hanging in wtf scenarios plenty of times throughout the film, like when Sophie goes to the wastes and says she's trying to find her sister (which is NOT the sister in the bakery, but a different one who is never mentioned in the film.) So in my opinion, Goro did not deserve the amount of shit he got, especially not from his own father. That being said, I highly recommend the Howl book trilogy, though Howl's Moving Castle (1) and House of Many Ways (3) are the best. The second book, Castle in the Air never really rubbed off on me and just seems like a sort of half-hearted attempt on rewriting Aladdin/1001 Nights. And they can all be found as audiobooks as well. From Up On Poppy Hill is a great film in my opinion. I like that it strays from the classic Ghibli film, just like When Marnie Was There, which I also think is a great film.

Well tales from earthsea is a close adaptation from the book whereas Howl's moving castle is a different story story from the book.

Preach. Howl' s moving castle left me with so many questions that should have been answered in the movie (and were addressed in the book) but people still call it a "masterpiece" because of Miyazaki. I say let Goro learn from his mistakes and grow and stop acting like his father is a god. Nobody is perfect.

If not "better" at least a director doing his own thing. I hope he can work out the 3D stuff Ronja was rough around the edges and I would have preferred that to be a 2D story. However if he can work with talented 3d animators with the time to perfect it I see no reason he couldn't do something unique.

Same, but I disagree with him becoming a better director than his father. I would much prefer if he becomes a better person altogether than to seek his title of "Successor of Hayao Miyazaki". It'd be like his whole life is just about getting his father's approval and not really growing as a person, in my opinion.

I really liked "From Up on Poppy Hill". I think it is a great movie, layered yet simple and easy to believe inn. I never watched the film based on the EarthSea trilogy because adaptations of books that I read always disappoint me. I saw the first Lord of the rings film and didn't like it. Anyway. The EarthSea trilogy, that became four books, is a masterpiece in my opinion, and If one should compare it with Tolkiens work I think the characters are deeper and has a far more interesting story from an existential and psychological view. It's actually the best fantasy I'v ever read and to make one film out of the three first books I believe is impossible. But this is interesting stuff and great work from you again.

I've never read the Eathsea series would you recommend it to someone who isn't that into Fantasy books ?( I like the Witchers books that I've read, but that's all I can think of)

It's a long time since I read it and I'm not that much a fan of fantasy anymore, but what I do remember about this book is that the characters are much deeper and therefor more "real" than in most such fiction, and that probably because of this they and their lives becomes much more prominent than the magic and strange creatures etc. So If I should ever recommend any fantasy it would be this "trilogy". Orsinian Tales, a collection of short stories also by Ursula K Le Guin is also good, and less fantasy. Maybe this would be better to start with as it is short and you can see if you like the style of her writing. Since talking about this author I must also mention Always Coming Home. A strange book that has been described as an archaeology of the future: "...about a cultural group who might be going to have lived a long, long time from now in Northern California. Part novel, part textbook, part anthropologist's record,.." Wikipedia. If I should compare this what I wrote here to anything I can say that I loved Narnia when young but would not recommend that to anyone now. I'v never read the Witchers books so I can not make any comparison to that. If you are interested in Sci-fi I recommend this rather recent book: The Windup Girl www.goodreads.com/book/show/6597651-the-windup-girl And since the subject mater of your video is about Japanese culture I want to recommend this short little book: The Guest Cat by Takashi Hiraide

Oh wow that's a lot of recommendations, I'll do my best to have a look at them. The Witcher is a fantasy book, but more that focuses on the characters who live in the world if anything it's a bit more of a detective esc story. I'll try some of Guin's short stuff and see how I feel I wouldn't mind reading more or even making videos about books if the right thing came up (probs something Japanese) and yes I'm more into Scifi

A good thing about "the Guest Cat" is that it is short and not much seems to happen. What I mean by this is that as a westerner I do not have the cultural references and that what is really going on and or written between the lines is lost. Therefor If anyone should talk about this book some research ought to be done. I still liked it though because of the time it depicts and the overall mood. About "The Windup Girl" I can say that it is a dystopian novel partly reminiscent of the world of "Bladerunner".The sea levels have risen and almost all oil resources are depleted so they use airships and mechanical springs. Almost all food is genetically engineered and the world is mostly controlled by a few big companies and bureaucrats . There is pirate-food that makes you sick and new diseases that affects plants as well as humans. All bird life is gone because cats can make them selves invisible, and mastodons are pulling springs in factories. I could go on but finish with saying that I think this work is more relevant and has more of a story than "Bladerunner", aka "Do androids dream of electric sheep."

Yeah that's always the issue with translation, always good to see the context or cultural background that the novel came from. I once did an animation project think its on this channel, inspired off Do androids dream of electric sheep, I'm a fan of the vibe of the book. It's quite different than the sexy neon film adaption.

The threatening a strike over Goro directing is so harsh. My dad didn't invite me to 4th of July this year purposefully and THAT hurt my feelings quite a bit i couldn't imagine how Goro felt. Talk it out Miyazakis. Parents have the ability to really break their kids confidence even when the kid is an adult.

I really like Goro's films. Earthsea had its problems but made up for it with it's visuals. From Up on Poppy Hill was just really great and has everything I look for in a Ghibli movie. I still couldn't get myself to watch Ronja as I don't like the 3D style....maybe one day.

I loved Ronja more than any animated series I’ve watched in a long time. Hard to say if that’s the magic of the original book or Goro’s talent and skill. It’s probably both, in addition to the fact that my own experiences map well onto major thematic and plot elements. Whatever the case, I didn’t think it was too long and I wish there was more to learn about those characters!

Goro improved GREATLY and continues to do so. He gave us an old (but quickly forgettable, unfortunately) lesson on what to do with past traumas/tragedies/experiences of life: using them as fuels to improve your own character/profession/life instead of hampering yourself, finding culprits and blaming everyone. Anime was not a mistake. It's a form of self expression, story telling and dreaming of better things. The anime he thinks is a mistake is a byproduct of what Japan as a country does to its people. Valueing the group over the individual's needs and desires. Forcing them to compete with one another and work till death is not an ideal reality. You want something else. I love Japan and its culture. I am critical because you can't love something blindly without acknowledging its flaws and how it should fix them.

Although Goro Miyazaki doesn’t lack any talent, I don’t think I can stand him as as a fellow artist (especially in the animation realm). He’s not “entirely” at fault, but part of me wishes he could’ve stuck to what he’s really good at (landscape/architecture). I don’t think Goro fully realized how difficult it is to be a “multidisciplinary” artist. Sorry if I sounded rather harsh. I have mixed feelings for Goro Miyazaki as an animator.

I (strongly) feel that "From up on Poppy Hill" is a better movie than "The Wind Rises" as well 😉 (is not a popular opinion AT ALL and it's been quite lonely thinking this way, so thank you for saying that!) I've loved your review on Goro's Miyazaki's career in Ghibli's Studio. When it comes to youtube reviews on Ghibli films, I'm used to poor reviewing skills and frankly nothing that I can relate to. me too, don't let anyone persuade you otherwise, because i guarantee half of those on the dislike, only do so because Hayao dislikes it, a very sad need to agree with the icon unfortunately i believe. instead of having their own thoughts and feelings about it. i believe if his father thought his son was on a path of disappointing fans, then he should have guided him with his extensive experience, simply should have been a father.. instead of attempting an animation strike and voicing his opinions on camera for all to see straight after the movies premiere, disrespectful.

Oh come on, Goro's Earthsea is still by far one of my favorite Ghibli movies to date. I hate knowing that in his eyes and most it's a meh movie. For me, Tales from Earthsea was my introduction to Ghibli movies as a whole, and to a degree changed me as person when I watched it.

Goro seems to be hit-and-miss at the moment. Poppy Hill's his best-reviewed movie, meanwhile Earthsea and Earwig and The Witch have been Ghibli's most derided films. But I'd love to see him keep making stuff. The themes he presents are worth exploring further in other projects (and they give Goro his own voice as a filmmaker) and it'd be sad to see that potential get thrown away.

I've just finished watching the entire Ronja series and I've also seen Earthsea and Poppy Hill. I enjoyed all of them, as well as most of the other Ghibli films. Then I watched _The Girl Who Leapt Through Time_ and realized why: there was not a single Ghibli film that confused me, whereas most other films (including _The Girl Who Leapt Through Time_ ) get me all mixed up to where I don't know what's going on.

As someone with an absentee father myself (who means well, but like all these things its complicated.), and also simultaneously really looked up to Miyazaki senior, this whole story resonated with me on a deeply personal level ever since I first heard about it, so I really appreciate this elaborate look into the subject. - I do really hope their relationship has truly improved, more for Goro's sake than his fathers', cause that's a rough situation. - Also -I actually completely agree with Poppy Hill being a better period drama than Wind Rises- I didn't say anything what are you talking about.

Think of it like this: Goro Miyazaki is a student and he is trying to impress his father like a son trying to give some good scores for him in the form of movies but it always ends bad. So, who cares if the scores are bad Goro Miyazaki is still a student he needs help from the teachers (all the other Japanese directors) and his classmates (his other family members) to succeed in both his life and works. We're all students and teachers ourselves and we are attending a school called life and if the teachers assigned us to something it's our choice to either study hard and get help or not it's all up to us.

Great series of videos! :) Up on Poppy Hill is one of my favorite Ghibli movies, such great story and characters and of course visual and music. I'm one of the Ghibli fans that watched Tale from Earthsea after hearing about the worst movie of the studio claim and while it wasn't as bad as people say it is(at least for me), it's in my bottom list of Ghibli films.
