Ever wonder what Fish look like on your sonar? In this video Tim takes you along with his Humminbird Solix and shows you what fish look like. He breaks down the basics of today's Sonar units including; Understanding your unit's transducer, how it works, and the "Cone Angle". All of these factors are important to painting a complete picture of what is below your boat.
Most default frequencies of today's transducers are 200kHz. At this frequency, the bottom area that the sonar is covering is approximately 1/3 of your overall depth. An easy number to remember is at 30ft deep, your sonar is scanning 10ft wide.
Here is the gear Tim is using...

That was great! You answered a lot of my questions, especially how wide the cone is. Reading sonar is a learned skill. I have found that reading it then catching fish has made a huge difference in my confidence. I hope this video has helped me break into that second level of understanding.

Well I haven’t looked at the comment section yet, but you answered a lot of questions I had. I’ve been to several major fishing schools and no one talks about sonar ... except for the offshore guys that say “look for that 6” rise on the bottom.” Then I feel stupid asking questions like I’m driving a Corvette and asking someone how do I put it in gear. Any rate - thank you for your time making this video.

I would love to see a series of videos with one of you fishing and the other narrating the video and going over the sonar and why you stopped there to fish. I think you guys do a really good job of breaking it down piece by piece and explaining it but I would like to see a video of everything put together you know like the whole thought process from the night before you go fishing to put the boat back on trailer and going home. It may take 10 videos to do but it would be the closest us the viewers would ever come to fishing with you. We have all of this awesome content to watch in pieces. I would like to see you both put it together and put your own advice to work in a series of videos like maybe a pov type video in the head Matt or Tim or you both!!! So glad to see both fishing again keep up the good work

Like this style of tutorial. First - Sonar 2D, then DI imaging, then SI, then combo 3 maybe 4 scree simultaneous. You could throw in fine tuning to adjust an compare images / and how that relates to fishing - prep and actual bait selection.

OnTopFishing as soon as you see a fish come across the fish finder he is directly under your transducer. I don’t use a fish finder for bass fishing but deep dropping in the Gulf of Mexico i can find a single fish in 1000’ of water and catch it. Best thing to do is learn all about your set up get out on the water and practice. I have now been able to distinguish the difference from snapper and grouper offshore. And you should be able to do the same for bass fishing. But I must say quality electronics make a world of difference in open water fishing. The transducer itself is just as important as good display.

With 2d sonar you can't really tell if the fish is to the left, right, in front, behind, etc. All the signal is telling you is that at some point the fish was inside the cone of your sonar. However, as he said if the fish shows up as a solid line then you know that it is right inside the cone. Depending on the water depth you're in your sonar cone may be pretty small though, so that narrows down the area the fish may be in. Using the 1/3 rule, if you're in 15 feet of water then that fish was within 5 feet of being directly underneath the boat. All of that said, even if you were able to locate exactly where the fish was they could have swam away already by the time you make the cast!

@@FishOClockSomewhere agree when I see the solid lines that's when the catching starts, mostly drop shot or just something that gets down there...even caught them on spinner baits in 25 foot of water. When I see arches I usually throw a spoon, crank bait or something top water (if they're busting shad especially)

Your description on the cone size was top notch. Better than anyone I've seen on KZfaq. I even emailed Humminbird about the cone width and I don't think they gave me that good of a description. They only mentioned the 20° and 40° angle. Not a 3rd of the depth. That's awesome. What Humminbird are you using?
