Probably fake. I’m not a diver and even i know that when you hear that you should get out the water as fast as you possibly can if you aint dead yet. And this guy had absolutely no reaction whatsoever 😂

Imagine how startling and terrifying it must be to randomly hear a sudden Sonar Ping while diving.

I'd love to actually hear what the ping sounds like up close but with a camera drone so my organs don't fail

A nice sinowave sweep from about 2.7 khz to 3.2khz followed by an echo about 4 seconds later. With an assumed sound speed underwater of 4800ft per/sec, that sonar found something at about 6000-6500 meters away from you :) edit: its probably an SQS-53C bow mounted active search and attack sonar on an Arleigh burke destroyer.

Always carry a recording of a soviet era ping to play back on an underwater speaker. Really makes them start pinging cause they can hear it, but they can't "see" it.

I have a fear of the deep blue, but at the same time I'm in awe of it.

Waveform tells that the first echo is about 1.15 sec after the original ping hits, so assuming 1460m/s sound speed at average temp, the echo's path is 1680m longer than the original's path. Assuming an average coast drop of ~45 degrees to where the seafloor echo comes from, that tells us geometrically that the echo path is roughly longer by the factor sqrt(2)=1.41. Solving the trigonomic equation, this tells us that the surface distance to the ship is roughly 4055m away from the diver since pythagoras applies, assuming roughly 45 degrees down to the first ground reflection. Second strong echo is at 1.75sec, that would result in roughly 6170m distance to the ship. So on average somewhere 4-6km out, but this ofc is just an approximation not accounting for actual ground features.

One ping, Vasily. One ping only, please.

The sonar sound is cool but I can’t believe how deep this dude was diving and how long he was able to be down there all in one breath. That looks to be very deep at first I thought he had scuba but nope dude is a beast

I think it was some sort of sonar test... saw a lot of military out on the water that day.

We not gonna talk about this man holding his breath for like 4 minutes while being pummeled by sonar pings?

The moment I heard that ping I would be out of the water fast. That's it. Diving done for the day.

I served on the USS Saratoga for 4 years back from 89-94, including Desert Storm. When we did a deployment, we were accompanied by 2 subs that would always be near us at all times. I could always tell when they were right below us because we would be pinging them, and they would be pinging us. It was like call and response! They had a second type of ping that sounded much different than this one. To me, it sounded digital. That haunting sound would put me to sleep every night. It was interesting in the Medeterainian because I could actually start to tell what depth the seas were by the reflections. I would put my ear on the metal of my bunk, which was attached to the inner hull, and hear everything clearly. It blew my mind to think there were hundreds of men in a metal tube right below us!

To hear that sound out in the middle of the ocean would be terrifying. Especially if you didn’t know what it was and wasn’t expecting it.

Fun fact: Even without being close to it, if you are close enough the sound is powerful enough to make your insides, not so inside.

I honestly think diving is a world of it's own, when underwater you adhere to different laws of physics, you have different worries but most of all it's the silence, nothing the sound of something far away suddenly reaches you.

i heard that in WWII docked ships and subs would keep their sonar running to keep espionage/sabotage divers away. someone swimming in from a distance wouldnt be able to take it and give up and someone dumb enough to jump in close to the sonar would die almost immediately from massive internal damage. at close range its not a sound, its a shockwave

They’re close, you can hear the sonar reflection off of the floor. I love how clear the recording is
