Sonata brought me to metal and I keep supporting them and I am glad that the sound picked up some elements of their first albums. Excited to give it a listen. Also great review \m/

Very nice, realistic and honest review. I think you could have mentioned more some particular songs and their overall style/atmosphere. I really like Angel Defiled with Tony toying with vocals with some amazing rhythms/riffs and overall theatrical style. Some of the songs, while being fast and stylistically pleasing power metal tracks like Cure for Everything or Shah Mat could have really used some truly memorable choruses, vocal lines or melodies, that one last hook, like The Cage, Ain't your fairytale or Weballergy

The mixing/mastering of this album was done by Mikko Karmila, who did the same for the first 3/4 SA albums to make that signature sound that they had (I also think he recorded all the keyboards for the first 2 albums). The sound production, and the volume level of the guitars in the mix, are very deliberate in order to make this new album feel more like a "classic"/early SA album. If you think the guitars are too low in the mix that is fine, but it is deliberate and not a flaw, as it is the same style mix as the early SA albums that so many people adore.

Only mixing by Karmila, mastering by Svante Forsbäck. And the production isn't that similar to the old albums. Not saying if it's better or worse, but it definitely is different.

They were my favourite metal band in their early days. They kinda lost me along the years. I still have listened all their albums. That how much they meant for me. The last 2 or 3 albums I started to lose hope they could make anything good anymore. First in line made me feel something similar than when listening them for the first time.

I am a guitarist and I think the guitars are perfectly mixed. It's about the song and if you want to hear the guitars beter just EQ them out.

Absolutely man, guitars sound great, prob better thanthe last couple studio albums I reckon. The drums sound wee bad ass in this album, it's produced by the same guy that done the first few albums I believe so that makes it even better 🤘

It's the same guitar volume as the first few SA albums, as Mikko Karmila came back to mix/master this album. This reviewer is likely not very familiar with SA's early albums. Also, a part of Mikko coming back to produce this album as if it was an early SA album is that it isn't engineered overly loud as the vast majority of music is now in the "loudness wars". Even someone like me, who is aware of music being engineered overly loud, can get thrown off when the occasional album doesn't do it. The overall sound volume not being so loud is probably adding to some people feeling they can't hear the guitars very well. I know my first listen to this album was on some earbuds at the gym and I at first kind of felt I couldn't really hear the guitars either, but once I got home to listen again on some good headphones it sounded WAY better.

@skeletankmcgraw7343 This 🤘 Yea I was like a wee schoolboy when I heard Mikko was doing it man. First thing I noticed straight away was the classic great sounding snappy drumsound was back only sounding better than ever 🤘I've been listening to the album on my mob with my AKG earbuds, they're tuned for modern bass in music these days which is shit when you want to listed to the unadulterated mix the band actually put out, had to turn the 60Hz right down just to enjoy it louder without the sub and bass range drowning the guitars, keys, and vox out.

3:00 That was my biggest concern when I heard First in Line. The speed is definitely there but the guitars are mixed HORRIBLY. Again. For like the 4th time. They need to just bring Jani back & have him help mix the music.

it's on porpuse, they have fans of every age, so the music has to be soft and speedy at the same time.

The guitars are mixed JUST like they are in the first 3/4 albums, so there is no reason you should complain about it if you like those albums? This album is literally mixed/mastered by the same guy who did those (Mikko Karmila), and he even was very purposeful in mixing it EXACTLY the same as those album. I don't believe Jani ever had any part in mixing anything when he was in SA, so bringing him back would not mean anything when it comes to mixing/mastering.

@@skeletankmcgraw7343 Volume wise they are probably the same but the guitars are mixed very differently. The first albums had quite a lot of mids and Clear Cold Beyond is just more scooped and have less body to the sound. I think it still sounds good but its not close to the first few albums (and even the first few albums have a very different sound when you compare them). I like how this album is mixed but guitars could be a bit more forward in the mids in my opinion but the way they are fits the mix well enough.

Long time fan of the band, enjoyed their first four albums but lost interest after they changed their sound to much. Will check out the new album hoping for class melopower. Good review Pedro! Now I hope for a review of the latest "Wintersun Time2 package launch video" from Jari 😅 see you soon guys 🤘

sonata was one of my favourite bands in the past but since unia or the days of grays sonata is not the same band.. they are not playing heavy metal anymore and the ballads are not the same quality of the old ballads .. i think 2 o 3 songs are ok in this album. but they are very far from the old times
