Try to remember -- try to BELIEVE -- that the same man who wrote this exquisite, romantic evocation of Old Europe before 1914 also wrote the electronically charged, ultra-modern title song to "Company". AND the vivid recreations of '30s theater music in "Follies". AND the myriad vaudevillian delights of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum." AND the black musical humor of "Sweeney Todd". What Picasso said of Marc Chagall could just as easily be said of Sondheim: "Steve must have an angel living inside his head."

Great way to describe each of those things.

In terms of musicality, this is Sondheim's greatest piece.
