I’m not sure if I’m using the correct terms here, but is this possible to do with just a 3d stroke? Like making a cube with just the outlines?

the growth animation on this x, that doesn't look like a simple scale. What is that part? love you guys videos to death but the one thing that has sometimes tripped me up is that there is usually an 'extra' effect that is left out and then I kind of scramble on how to find it or do it. 😅 doesn't look like a regular scaling..help!

I appreciate the feedback here! With short content it's challenging to show everything outside of the main concept. However, to answer your question, you're correct the animation is not a scale. I used Trim Paths to animate the shape from 50% (Start&End) to 100%&0%.
