A deleted scene featuring the "Song of the Rebel Irish", from the film "Gods and Generals". Lyrics are below.
And as a general note, I do not approve of cussing or the use of foul language and if any post contains anything of that sort, I will delete it. I don't have any problem with discussion over this video, but keep it clean and dignified.
I have ancestors who fought on both sides of the war and I have Irish, French, English, Native American, and African American blood. So please, I don't want to hear anything demeaning regarding race. Personally, I think the Civil War was a very sad time in America's history and I sympathize with both sides as well as those who were not Americans and yet fought in the war.
LYRICS:
Oh, not now for songs of a nation's wrongs,
not the groans of starving labor;
Let the rifle ring and the bullet sing
to the clash of the flashing sabre!
There are Irish ranks on the tented banks
of Columbia's guarded ocean;
And an iron clank from flank to flank
tells of armed men in motion.
The Irish green shall again be seen
as our Irish fathers bore it,
A burning wind from the South behind,
and the Yankee rout before it!
O'Neil's red hand shall purge the land-
Rain a fire on men and cattle,
Till the Lincoln snakes in their own cold lakes
Plunge from the blaze of battle.
Whoe'er shall march by triumphal arch
Whoe'er may swell the slaughter,
Our drums shall roll from the Capitol
O'er Potomac's fateful water!
Rise, bleeding ghosts, to the Lord of Hosts
For judgement final and solemn;
Your fanatic horde to the edge if the sword
Is doomed line, square, and column!

As a born Irishman and a resident Southerner I fervently resent your notion. The north treated the Irish like second class citizens. The South welcomed us with open arms. The South was then, and still is now, a far greater and more caring place. There's a reason you never hear the term "northern hospitality".

It is very sad how so many Irish came off the ships in the North, immediately recruited to a cause they did not understand, in a land foreign to them, most for money or food for their families. The Irish of the South knew exactly what they were fighting for and why.

David Kincaid does an amazing version of this song on his album "The Irish American's Song". I advise all Irish Americans too go to Antietam to the sunken road, its a beautiful yet sorrowful place. As well as Gettysburg, i wish to visit Fredericksburg soon. ERIN GO BRAGH! Riamh N'ar Dhruid o Spairn Iann!

The movie is Gods And Generals. 1st movie in a trilogy, but was released second. Gettysburg is the second movie, but it was released first. The third movie called The Last Full Measure should be released over the next few years. The movies are based on a book trilogy with the same names. However the book that Gettysburg is based on is called Killer Angels. Anyway, this scene was deleted from Gods and Generals.

I said the IRA of 1916 were not to be even slightly considered terrorists but freedom fighters. They were fighting the British because they wanted freedom. My great grandfather gought in that war at the age of 17. Droch ( bad ) Ni raibh ( negative of bhi siad ) ag troid ( fighting ) Bhreatnaigh ( British ) Sean aithir ( granfather ) cogadh ( war ) sin ( that ) :)

" "Song of the Rebel Irish," created by David Kincaid, whose "The Irish Volunteer" album of newly unearthed Civil War Irish soldier songs. The wartime lyric came without a melody, but Kincaid found a period tune that fit the lyric's difficult meter and put them together to create as historically accurate a "new" Irish song as can be found. Ben Shaeffer, as "Sgt. Fitzgerald" plays period guitar and sings three verses at the campfire."

Thank you very much for your post! I am also tired of people dissing one side or the other in the Civil War and complaining about accents. I know my imitation of an Irish accent is quite poor, imitating any accent is hard. Being a history enthusiast, I also loved this film because it showed the other nations that were involved with the Civil War and how it hurt them as well. Again, thank you!

FYI..My GGGrandfather got off the boat from Eire and was harassed in to the Yankee Army. In his own words (written and oral traditon) he said he was treated no better than a dog (Waterbury CT). He left the army in Savannah, GA, at war's end and stayed here in the South because he couldn't bear the bastard Yankees for one more day.

It is good that people such as yourself post such fantastic historical material onto KZfaq. I like your analysis of the Civil War as a conflict that involved many nations- from the ancient Indians to the recently arrived refugees escaping from oppression in Europe (sadly they too often turned into the oppressor)

Yet that's exactly what they did. AOL featured a 3 or 4 minute clip of Antietam on the film's opening weekend...anyone else remember that? It had battle scenes from the Cornfield, Jackson and Hood sending couriers back and forth, General McClellan and Hancock discussing tactics on the battlefield, etc. Films cut expensive scenes all the time; the Antietam sequence was even scored and everything.

@MattCFC300 It's referring to the red hand which was the symbol of the O'Neill clan (who were High Kings of Ireland at one time), and which also figures on the flag of Ulster.
@crazycelt89
@crazycelt89 13 жыл бұрын
@MattCFC300, O'neill refers to Niall, in ancient Ireland. His ancestor HyNiall claimed the present province of Ulster under the dominion of the O'neills. The red hand is from HyNial's bloody left hand that he chopped off and flung ashore, thus first "touching" the land and securing it for himself and his descendants. Since England's first invasion of Ireland, they've gone through the closest part of Ireland to England, Ulster, the province of O'neill. Guess the rain is their vengeance.

I'm Irish & I don't think the accent is too bad. Better than our attempts at American ones! As with the USA, each area of Ireland has a different accent & the movie portrays a number of them. ANyway, it is wrong for an Irish person to insult 'Gods & Generals' over the small issue of an 'accent'. For the film does our nation a great service by telling the largely unknown story of how Irishmen fought & killed Irishmen in a foreign land. Many thanks!

i had ancestors fight for the union, get captured and sent to the now infamous andersonville prison camp where they died, God rest their souls, but i still support the south. the south had many anomalies like the south had a indian high in in the ranks, its was general Stand Watie who reeked havoc out in the west, i.e. texas and arkansas. along with that the story of general joe shelby who would not surrender so he went down to south america and breed with the locals.

i agree, but then again it is an interpretation of the civil war which was over 140 years ago, so none of the movie is going to be perfectly accurate. It might have been what the irish were like in those times, but, like the rest of the world, they are completely different now.
