"Song to the Moon" from the opera "Rusalka," Op. 114 by Antonin Dvorak premiered March 31, 1901.
Orchestrated for band by Senior Chief Scott Silbert
United States Navy Concert Band
conductor: Capt. Brian Walden
soprano: Musician 1st Class Susan Kavinski
Recorded at the Hylton Performing Arts Center, Manassas, Vir. in May 2015.
"Song to the Moon" is perhaps one of the most beautiful arias ever written for soprano voice. The aria takes place early in the first act of the opera "Rusalka" by Antonin Dvorak. The protagonist, Rusalka, is a water nymph who falls in love with a human prince she views swimming in her lake. As a water nymph, she is invisible to humans, so she prays to the rising moon in a heart-wrenching aria to reveal her love to the human.

I have tracked this piece over again for the last twenty years to every Utube posting I can find. This is my number one soprano aria and I've been a student of opera for 40 years. I am a tenor and this year will find the sheet music so that I can sing this just for myself as I love it. Ms Kavinski is the rank of the very best I've heard sing this aria, that includes any one you can find on Utube....anyone. What is her future after the service? She should be heard beyond this "happenstance" posting. Brava!!!!!

I get goosebumps and tears in my eyes every time I listen to this piece of Dvorak as sung by the soprano Susan Kavinski. I wish I can congratulate you and the conductor myself. The sound is technically perfect too. I will look out for more music of Susan Kavinski as I am hooked on her voice - I hope you read the comments Susan.

That Susan and the Navy orchestra would think of themselves worthy of performing such a challenging selection as this is a definite tribute to their musical prowess. She does sing this extraordinarily well. To be able to render this kind of world class performance is just astounding--these people have this amazing talent yet sacrifice much to be in the service of their country. Very, very impressive. We do still have some in this country of whom we can be especially proud. Bravissimo Susan and orchestra!
