Songkran Festival honoring Thai culture kicks off at Minnesota State Capitol

Organizers say it's the largest Thai festival in the country and is a late celebration of the Thai New Year that took place in April. It's also a nod to Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

Thai dance performances have a detailed and standardized teaching system. Those who learn Thai dance must practice Thai dancing to meet the standards set by Thailand. It is a beautiful and unique performance that is only in Thailand.

I was an exchange student 10+ years ago in Minnesota representing Thailand. Nobody knows Thailand or where Thailand was. A lot has been changing since and now Minnesota has the Thai Festival!

Papaya did not originate in Southeast Asia, including tomatoes. The very first ones to grow it were in Java (Indonesia) when they were a Dutch colony. It was then brought to Siam (Thailand) by the Dutch and spread to other countries in mainland Southeast Asia. Many Thais don't know the fact that Lao Som-Tum isn't actually from Laos as a country, but it refers to the northeastern region of Thailand where people are ethnically Lao. However, nowadays we don't use that word to separate people since Thai people have many sub-ethnic groups. Lao is the closest and almost becomes the same country. Lao (as a neighboring country of Thailand) has its very own version of Papaya Salad. In fact, they use different ingredients to cook a similar kind of salad and call differently, which is different from the one that one of them is cooking.

ก็ไม่เป็นไรนี่คะช่วยๆกันค่า ตำไทยตำลาว ยังไงซะที่คนต่างชาติส่วนใหญ่ชอบกินมันก็คือตำไทยอยู่ดี เพราะไม่มีปลาร้าและรสเปรี้ยวหวาน อีกอย่าง เราก็เรียกตำลาวอยู่แล้ว
