Күн бұрын

Hey friends! Here's a quick question & answer video, where I'll talk about walk-ups and walk-downs, giving a quick to-the-point overview of what these are, when to use them, and how they work.
This question comes in from Patreon supporter Bill, who wrote:
"David, could you address walk ups and downs. Are there standard ones for each chord transition (a - c, c- g etc.). They really make a huge difference. I'm not sure where to start in adding them."
In answering Bill's question, I'll be showing the tool FretMonster which I've built and you can access here:
songnotes.net/fretmonster
This tool can help you visualize the notes in any key you pick, as shown on the fretboard. Also, the tool lets you change between seeing the notes with their name (e.g., C, F, G), or view those same notes but with their scale degree (e.g. 1, 4, 5). This can be a helpful way to see the notes of a scale in action, as they're positioned on the fretboard. And of course, I'll explain how walk-ups and walk-downs are essentially using these exact notes. Check out my video above for more!
Lessons I've made with walk-ups and walk-downs
If you're hungry for more, here's a list of the lessons I've made which make use of this general technique:

I´ve been incorporating a few walk-ups/downs in a couple of songs because I´ve learnt them specifically, like little unique tricks (Hallelujah, Let It Be and Hotel California). Watching this video just made all the lights come on, thank you so much! It all makes sense now, can´t wait to add it to other songs!

I need to rewatch this a few more times. It's starting to click. I know the 145 and 236 of each key but been swithing between cords only. Doing the step up and down to each makes it sound so much better. Sounds very Johny Cash, but love his music.

When my time gets tight but I need to practice I do what I call a minimal practice. Which for me is playing through two choruses of blues usually in e concert for the upcoming rock gigs ( popular key in rock). So since I play alto, tenor sax/ and flute that would be improvising in c# for alto, f# for tenor, e for flute. But a minimal practice 2 choruses of blues improv on each instrument. Simple but helps immensely.

I’m so sorry to say, but I didn’t get what you were saying. I understand what I lV and V are, I know what the lowest note in chords are too, but you moved your fingers so fast. I believe I understand the theory, but I still don’t know how to make my guitar do it. It’s like a math class, where the teacher spends so much time proving the equation, yet never really tells us how to do it. I learn best by being shown what to do very slowly, and once I know what to do, then explain the proof. I refuse to use it as an excuse, but I do have dyslexia and sometimes it works to my advantage, but not this time. That said, I’m going to subscribe to you, I’m going to download your fabulous fretmonster machine Because you’re good you’re really good, and I know once I get it it’ll be worth all it’s taking me to get through this.

Don't give up whatever you do! Keep plugging at it from every angle and eventually it will pop into focus. Try this angle...he mentions the 1, 4, and five chord (standard blues progression). The walk downs & ups are the individual notes between each chord. His Fretmonster is awesome, but, you can create this yourself by drawing the fretboard and placing notes with their intervals to get a visual. Go as slow as you need to. Also while listening to David, you can go to the settings button listed at the bottom of the video and slow down the playback speed. Hope this helps. Keep a song in your heart!
