How could the Sesame Street music go from child entertainment to torture for prisoners in Guantanamo and Abu Graib?
Music elates, touches the soul and bypasses reason. Music is magic. But precisely this magic can turn it into an insidious weapon - for music and violence belong together. The brutal power of African war dances, the ferocity of Maori Hakas, the earth-shattering roar of US sound guns blasting Metallica at Taliban hideouts - the principle is always the same: Aggressive sounds demoralise the enemy and whip the allies into a frenzy.
In ’Songs of War’, we explore the extraordinary harmony between music and violence. Sesame Street composer, Christopher Cerf, always wanted his music to be fun and entertaining. But then he learned that his songs had been used to torture prisoners in Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib. He is stunned by this abuse of his work and wants to find out how this could happen.
Cerf embarks on a journey to learn what makes music such a powerful stimulant. In the process, he speaks to soldiers, psychologists and prisoners tortured with his music at Guantanamo and find out how the military has been employing music as a potent weapon for hundreds of years.

Many of the techniques listed are used in jails across the country. They have also been used in facilities holding migrants. The uncomfortably cold rooms have been mentioned over and over again by anyone who has experienced these facilities. The preventing sleep and the lack of food as well. Even using scalding hot water for showers that you couldn't get used to or enjoy. This type of torture is used on people who haven't been convicted of any crime, in facilities holding children and migrants that may very well have every legal right to be granted asylum and citizenship.

Chris Arendt is a fine and responsible person. A dishonorable discharge will make it hard to find employment. Its actually an honorable thing that he did. Why doesn't somebody help him find a job.

woooooow. thats horrible specially the sesame street theme (witch version ever) is blasting for days on end. for my little family member i played the theme on youtube and then he says: was that also not a dutch artical? go check it out. so i did and wow. even during a date a friend of mine says your dieing inside. its not fun

I'm gonna get some hate for this comment, especially from people who love the military, but it's really frustrating to listen to the Drowning Pool members. And I say that as someone who loves rock and metal. "Sucks that you have to go to war to keep peace." Like no buddy, you don't have to do anything. Your government told you it was for peace, and you just believed in them blindly. How could people be this gullible? If the government told him to jump off a bridge for peace, would he do it? And then his friend jumps in and says "We can argue all day, should somebody be somewhere, should we be the world police.." What's wrong with arguing about that? What's wrong with asking those questions exactly? What business DO you guys have in other people's countries, keeping the "peace"? (Mind you, he did say the band has conflicting opinions on this issue, so I don't know what his stance is.)

They believe it because that's the same lie that they tell about the founding this country. Oh the settlers were searching for religious freedom, or the indigenous people were savages who needed salvation. When really it was because the elites of Europe had depleted their land of it's resources and were desperately looking for a way to maintain their existence.

Exactly! I'm south Asian but grew up and went to school in the States, and our history classes fed us the same ridiculous narratives: the civilized pilgrims versus those savage native Americans. I was a kid and I ate it up, because I didn't know any better! It's tragic how they call the most intelligent and sensitive people "savages." Like go take a look in the mirror, buddy. I bet this occurred even earlier in history, with the Romans and Celts. The Romans referred to the Celts as "uncivilized" and "barbaric" and used that as an excuse to wipe them out, if my understanding is correct. Whenever you see those words in mainstream history, you know it's a red flag.

I'll probably get a lot of criticism for saying this, but, as long as the torturers weren't using Led Zeppelin's, "Fool in the Rain", as one of the songs, I'd say that the songs still fell within humanitarian guidelines.

They did this in Waco to try and get Koresh and the Dividians out of the house. Along with blaring music extremely loud for days on end, they also played screeching animal sounds, such as a rabbit dying/screaming.

Clearly you didn’t watch the video because it clearly stated that the Americans developed the techniques as a result of their soldiers experiences with being tourtured by the Chinese and North Koreans during the Korean War so gtfo with your bigotry you aren’t doing anything but making the world a worse place with that

@@geriatricjoe7871 I don't think something is true just because the video says it's true. Just because that CIA torture guy blames the Chinese, doesn't automatically mean it was the Chinese. Obviously an ex-CIA guy isn't gonna blame his own country, so he's a biased source of information. What does he even mean to say? That the Chinese were the ones who invented torture by music, and the Americans were inspired by them? I wanna know more details. How did the Chinese have the budget/technology at the time to invent these torture techniques?
