I think it's cool how you can take a topic like this and make it accessible to your audience of video gamers who probably aren't dancing with a 40 at the function (that "what's a 40" joke KILLED ME!!) But it's even cooler how much you're learning and executing on different forms of media. Your pause menu sample beat is very pretty, and I'm guessing you're the one modelling and creating the things for your game. I'm excited to play it dude. You got that multimedia talent going on but you're dedicated and have the vision to really pursue it.

4:08 thanks for including this song! Fun fact: when making that song, I swear the engineer and I actually heard navi in the song saying “Hey!” BEFORE we ended up sampling it to put it in there. The engineer was like “That’s cool, you sampled Navi” I said “No I didn’t. Play the me the part you’re talking about.” He plays it, we both hear her yell “hey!” and I freak out. One of my favorite cases is Janet Jackson's "China Love" sampling "Moonlit City Roa", from Legend of Mana. It's extremely blatant, especially considering it's literally the beginning of the song sped up and repeated throughout. But the best part? The Medallion, a 2003 Jackie Chan movie, used China Love in its soundtrack... but only a very small piece, specifically _the vocal-less beginning notes that sampled Moonlit City Roa!_ And that's how Yoko Shimomura technically composed a track for a Jackie Chan movie.

This stuff is always interesting to me. Video game music being hidden in real music and vice versa is an interesting thing. Still to this day my favorite little bit of info is Michael Jackson's influence on Sonic 3 and Knuckles' soundtrack. And on the opposite side of this video. I like when video games reference real songs. Like in Hifi Rush, the newer game. The first Boss Fight goes to a song titled "Too Big to Fail, and it's identical to Nine Inch Nails' 1,000,000 which is the song they used in the game if you play with the OST off. The beginning of the song is identical to 1,000,000.

It's so nice to see that you of all people appreciate Burial's style of sampling. It's genius and really creative and the only other artist I know that is as good and as creative with sampling is DJ Shadow, who created an ENTIRE ALBUM purely from samples

It's quite probable Burial did the same thing for his Untrue album which was made using soundforge, a program which afaik only allows you to edit audio i.e. samples are the only thing you really can use. If anyone wants to know more about Burial's Untrue look for the video titled "Burial's Untrue: The making of a masterpiece" by Resident Advisor. Burial's music is almost too emotionally charged for me, even when I'm very happy some of his songs can make me feel like I have a lump in my throat, powerful stuff.

So this is very niche, but if you are into this sort of stuff, I can absolutely thoroughly recommend "Den Sorte Skole", a danish act who have also created several albums purely out of samples - plunderphonics, if you will. The main hook of Kernkraft 400 by Zombie Nation (an incredibly popular sports anthem) was lifted from one of the few original pieces of music from a Commodore 64 game from 1984 called Lazy Jones (the track is called Stardust in the game).

Kero Kero Bonito is another band that frequently samples video games. Their song Sick Beat recreates a sample from Super Mario 64, their song Graduation has the Mario Kart 64 lap sound effect in it, their song I'd Rather Sleep uses a bass MIDI soundfont from EarthBound, and their song Make Believe samples some Super Mario World sound effects near the end

My favorite video game sample is one Janet Jackson did for her song “China Love”. A Legend of Mana sample of all things, but damn, it sounds great.

Love this video! Thundercat is a pretty big Sonic fan. I couldn’t give you another example off the top of my head, but I know I’ve heard more references in his music outside of Them Changes. Terrific job researching and making the topic fun and engaging whether you’re coming from a music background or video game background. “40 what?” had me dying. Great job!

3:33 God damn this video feels so personal, I love rap/rnb and I pretty much knew all of these, it was really exciting to see someone else notice them. (I would have another one, tho it's not a sample and just uses a similar sound, the song "closed on sunday" has doot doos that always make me think of mario sunshines soundtrack.)

The mr. Bungle self titled album uses lots of video game samples and it came out in 1991. The song 'Egg' has samples from both super mario brothers and altered beast. Going into 'Egg', the end of 'Carousel ' has a sample from Scoreboard, a Nintendo baseball game. The song 'Girls of Porn' has the smash TV sample when the guy says "I'd buy that for a dollar". There's pinball machine sound effects on 'Stubb a Dub" as well.

Oh MAN my favorite example of this is Jakey (of Nakey Jakey fame) sampling the Shadow of the Colossus soundtrack (specifically the track Epilogue at a minute 17 seconds in) in DRIVE OFF A BRIDGE. His music is absolutely peppered with video game samples, which makes a lot of sense given his background, but this one is my personal favorite.

One of my favorite artists who does this is bo en. In his album pale machine he sampled sound effects from yoshi and pikmin for one of his songs, another in the album is a straight up lyrical remix of a song from a game called anodyne ("Friend"), and there's a bunch of other little fun samples that he takes from all sorts of places. The dude also composes music for video games, super cool artist imo
