Terry Kath is seriously one of the most underrated guitarist EVER. Jimi Hendrix absolutely admired him. Terry's solo in this Tanglewood 25 or 6 to 4 performance, solidifies him has an extraordinary guitarist. Chicago was never ever the same after he died. The musical soul of Chicago dissolved. He was a real gift to music.

He says "Terry Kath" at the end, the name of the guitar player he was acknowledging. Unless you knew his name there is no way to not think he said 'take care'. From a musician's standpoint, you got to love how other band members come over to help him adjust his drum kit. And then Terry just sits there and Treads water doing some nice little fiddling around and then he gets the audience into it,. This is the way bands are supposed to be for real.

@@mrfester42 You must be an aficionado of the guitar arts. As such your opinion of "bullshit" is not very nuanced or accurate. Shredding as an artistic choice is completely valid and has been used as that for decades by some of the recognized best guitarists of all time. It's when it's done as some race to a finish line that it becomes bullshit. You should know that. Kath was all you said he was and more. He inspired a whole generation of aspiring musicians, including me. His life was cut way too short, but not his legend. It lives on.

This is an amazing live performance. So glad you did this one. Terry Kath (guitarist) had a style all his own and the sound of Chicago really changed after his tragic death. The horn section in the band also helped to give a lot of their songs from this era such a unique and distinctive sound. The horn section in this band is a trumpet, a saxophone, and a trombone. In terms of the title, I have always heard the time as a commentary on the wee hours of the morning. The lyrics are about the difficulty of writing a song (so it's a commentary on the art of songwriting) and it's obvious that the songwriter is up very very late--at one point he says, "waiting for the break of day." So I have always heard it to mean 25 or 6 to 4 (in the morning); otherwise known as 3:34 or 3:35 am. Great reaction!

He says “Terry Kath” at the end (not “take care”). Terry was the guy in blue rocking that guitar solo. The fact that you appreciated it enough to listen to that masterpiece of live rocking solo was great. Chicago is one of those sleeper bands that hat a lot of great hits. “Color my world” and “smile” are same band but different sound. Terry Kath (the guitarist in blue as I mentioned) was a dead ringer for sounding like Ray Charles when he sang. Great react.

Songwriter Robert Lamm had writer's block. Much of the clues are in the lyrics. "Searching for something to say." He's in his room, trying to come up with lyrics to a song and nothing is coming to him. It's 3:35 in the morning, he's been at it all night, and wondering if he should continue trying or to just give up. What he does instead is write down his thoughts at that moment, what he sees and hears outside, and notes the time: 25 or 26 minutes to 4AM. Put that all together with some killer music, and you've got yourself a major hit.

Caught them at Sunday Break-2 on the Steiner ranch just outside of Austin Texas, Sept. 1976. The line up was England Dan/John Coley, Firefall, Chicago, The Band, Steve Miller and Fleetwood Mac. People had small grills going and were giving out food. People with hefty trash bags full of weed, $1 for a hand full and the river was full of naked people. Terry Kath was one of the greatest guitarists ever and that lead is possibly the best ever and to think that Rolling Stone magazine did not have him in their top 100 guitarists. That is a crime.

Tanglewood is a music venue in Lenox MA. It’s the summer home of The Boston Symphony Orchestra. They have popular artists in the summer, but nothing like in the past. I grew up in the next city to the north. Just an amazing place to sit on the lawn under the stars and hear great music.

The lyrics were pretty ingenious. To get the meaning, one needs only to look at a clock and think about time. This performance always gives me chills! I'm sure someone has already told you the meaning of the title in former comments, though. Thanks for choosing this one!

The horns are a trumpet, slide trombone, and a tenor saxophone. The saxophone is different from the others, as it doesn't have a mouthpiece like a trumpet or trombone. It has a mouthpiece with a thin, flat, replaceable part called a reed. It looks like wood, but it's made from a type of reed plant, and that thin vibrating reed is part of what gives woodwind instruments their unique sound.

Tanglewood is a classical music venue, summer home of the Boston Symphony so the acoustics are superb. They had some rock bands there especially post-Woodstock, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, etc. This was Chicago with guitar god Terry Kath, fire Chicago. They were never the same after he passed. You want 70's fire check out Johnny Winter Captured Live. Highway 61 Revisited. Johnny was plug-and-play, no special effects, just relentless shredding

When Kath died, they went from being a solid rock band to the softer, pop band they were known as in the 80s.

Totally locked into your choices. So, I play the Trumpet. In 1984, there was a really solid rock band (high school guys). The bass player invited a few of us in to jam... Trumpet, sax, trombone. We played this, Live and Let Die and No Reply at All plus a few others I can't remember. Another great memory ✌️

My brother is in the music business. He's quite succesful and knows a ton of people you'd probably recognize.. He knows Peter Cetera of Chicago and asked about the meaning once. He said that the band was late in the night, in the studio, trying to come up with one more song for the album, and someone asked what time it was. The answer was, Twenty Five Or Six To Four. The rest is history.

The horn trio is tenor sax, trombone and trumpet. I've seen them four times and that horn section has changed over the years but they have stayed true to the music. Tragically, Terry Kath, the lead guitar;; died during a gun accident in seventy six. He was the backbone of that band and it would never be the same without him. The studio version of this song was shortened for the album but Kath's playing is not diminished within.

EXCELLENT FIRST CHOICE!!! Chicago was touring their first album called "Chicago Transit Authority", which debuted in 1968, I know because I waited in line at the record store to get it. After Tanglewood, which is in south central Massachusetts, they came to Oakdale Theater in Wallingford, CT. in the summer of 70', I went to that show which is in a giant tent, they brought the house down and stunned the audience with a combination of jazz, rock, blues, with horns and one of the best guitar players at that time. The first 2 albums are similar in style and are my personal favorites, they were raw and untamed, the music just flowed on and on. No 3-4 minute AM radio songs, then they crossed over to a more commercial style with less horns and very little guitar and pushed the vocals with a lot of love songs. They have about 20 albums and multiple platinum albums. Enjoy.

I saw them perform this… in late 60s Or 1970… I sat in the front row! All those instruments, especially the horn section, ( plus his voice & that guitar solo) just blew me away!!! It was absolutely AMAZING!!!

Great tune by this group, I think he was wondering if he should write more music at 25 or 26 to four o'clock. They have 100 of songs to chose from. One of my favorites is South California Purple live from their album Chicago at Carnegie Hall and an "Hour in The shower" but all their radio play songs are great as well.
