In this video series, Berklee Songwriting instructor Scarlet Keys shows you the songwriting tools that professional songwriters use and how you can apply them to your own songs. Scarlet will demonstrate how to write songs in major and minor keys, and show you how to use notes that feel stable and unstable, and when to use them to best fit your lyrics. She will also get into how to write melodies that bring out the best in your songs’ lyrics, and how to incorporate rhythms intentionally. After watching this video series you will be able to paint the scene in your musical story, which will allow you to gain a new awareness as a songwriter and use these time-tested tools to make your songs more emotionally impactful.

Beautifully illustrated with such clear examples. Love her voice too.....never consciously thought about these two methods of highlighting key words. I have never used the first one but plan to try it out soon! So many simple things that can make a real difference.

Great tips/lesson and a great video series. Just curious, when extending a moment by a few beats to draw in the reader, does it make a difference if this moment is part of a verse or a chorus? Also does it matter where in the verse or chorus this extension is, like either on the second to last line or last line? Thanks again. Great stuff

Awesome lessons. I have a question. Would it really matter if 2 measures I keep chord change on beat 2 and last 2 measures on beat 3? Would it be overkill or adds contrast again?
