I love this tune too. I was obsessed with it about 10 yrs ago and learned it by ear to play on guitar with a drummer. We could never find a bassist who knew how to play on this level.

Fantastic, thanks! I was born and raised in france and this is classic 60s culture, i remember my parents and grandma talking about this soundtrack. It's one of these that once heard at a young age, it just stays in your mind forever. Those strings are something else... The band Air, also frenchies a bit older than i am said a bunch of times Morricone was a big inspiration, and it's pretty obvious in a good way in their music. I had enjoyed your Brian Wilson related vids before, now this is next level on my list :] Thanks, please keep it up !

Reverb probably comes a lot from the big studio room where the orchestra was recorded in. This was still traditional orchestra conducted and recorded at once along with more modern instruments like electric guitar in the same room. As for production techniques, there is not much involved but some clever mic placement from mid/far distance (no close miking -even the spring reverb guitar amp sounds from afar). That makes everything incredibly well glued and naturally mixed togheter. As for Italian studio musicians, they were simply the best in the world in those days (along with their British studio fellows) because of the huge cinema industry. A lot of them would become well known and ridicilously prolific on their own, for instance Alessandro Alessandroni, in the flourishing Library Music production for films and TV. Great analysis, thanks for your video.

The theme is My Way in a minor key. Always thought this was a subtle reference to Sinatra’s mafia connections or vice versa.

I fell in love with music at a very early age because if Enio. To me, his music captured the magic of the Spanish landscapes better than Sergio Leone's cinematographer.

Grest analysis, but it seems worth mentioning how insanely simple the clarinet melody is in the A section. It's 4 descending chromatic notes, ending on A. The rhythms vary, but it just cycles thru those 4 notes. I think that also helps anchor it in the key.

Yeah good point. I thought I had covered it better and you can see it as in my score. I especially should have put more emphasis on it considering that one of my main ideas was that the simplicity and perfection of his ideas are one of the things that makes his music great. There is a simultaneous sophistication and simplicity

Excellent as always. You have an intuitive way of identifying and breaking down chord concepts that makes your videos easy to learn from. I've heard about Radiohead's Morricone influence for a long time, but halfway through, it occurred to me that this song must have been the inspiration for "Exit Music (For A Film)". You can sing the melody of the verse over the B section of "The Sicilian Clan" and it fits perfectly.

Remember that D major is in melodic A minor. What romantics used to explore. So you can still see all as a tonicization of A Minor’s subdominant. The major/minor thing is again a romantic thing. Interesting is how he loops a romantic chordnprogression

Great point. This progression sounds so smootht hat it doens't strike the ear as "look how crazy this progression is..." it just sounds good. Thanks for watching commenting, and please make sure to subscribe. Thanks!

Is that true, that 2 or 4 to 5 can resolve from minor to major or vice versa? Great video! Ennio's themes have a kind of deceptive simplicity to them. You did a great job explaining the coolness in the harmony, and arrangement. Funnily, I don't think I've heard the original before. Have you heard the Naked City version? It's pretty good.

Yes it is true. This song is a great example as a typical 4 to 5 in D minor would be Gmi6 to A7b9, but in this case it resolves to D major instead of D minor. Yes, Naked City is what turned me onto the song originally. They do a very creative version although the sound quality and aesthetic of the original is more enjoyable to my ears now.

The horn is probably alto saxophone. ( classical sound).

I feel like this has a 4/4 vamp as a turn around, and then it is in 6/4 during the initial melody. That's what gives it kind of a trippy feel at first -- it sounds like the melody keeps jumping or skipping ahead because of the 6/4. What you say is the extended melody, I see as a switch to 4/4, which gives the melody some breathing room. The chord progression is great, but it makes more sense if you follow that there is a line cliche that is descending in semi-tones.

Another great analysis. The movie is available on KZfaq movies kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rNuBf9Vz3LeUeJ8.html , I'm sure I've seen it a long time ago but I'm definitely going to rewatch it and see how the music and themes are used.
