Michael was a SEGA fan, he loved working with them on Sonic 3 and Space Channel 5. Nakamura clearly was a lot more cynical about it and wanted to milk his success... success Dreams Come True only found because of his compositions for Sonic 1

Listened to the songs and I don't think they're bad at all. I'd say the problem is more in the beat. It seems a bit slow for a Sonic game. It'd definitely fit with a slower, more methodical platformer. Clearly, the music isn't fully realized too so I'd imagine a lot of the more off putting sounds would get smoothed out if it had been used. That said, there are aspects to the music that are reminiscent of later Sonic music. The second song's beat of the batman module reminds me a bit of Knuckles' Genesis theme. I know that probably wasn't meant for Sonic 2, but the similarity is there.

Looking at the video and hearing the full track on his channel. With what was composed, it's not bad really.. just not something thatd be fitting for a track on sonic.

Not only is there a Lost Sonic 2 Soundtrack but also a music scrapped one in Sonic Superstars I knew this soundtrack even before Sonic Superstars released. It was when IGN or whoever in red first showed the gameplay of Sonic Superstars which evolved Sonic going through a Jungle with music similar to Sonic 4. There was no Hud, sound effects for the end cutscene and no performance of the Drop Dash in that gameplay video.

The song wouldnt be so bad if it was used in another ip. But using this in sonic 2 after sonic 1 pretty much set the standard for what people expect from the soundtrack of these games would have been a mistake. Thats like if mario 3 used the battletoads ost.

In terms of the sound capabilities of the Sega Genesis, that soundtrack clip was awful. The Genesis is capable of much better sound than many developers ended up using.

yeeeah, no offense, but i'm not a big fan of javelosa's work. i don't think it's very fitting for sonic, and generally not something i personally would listen to... for a second i thought maybe it was gonna be something like tim follin's work, something really fast paced and such. but i think nakamura's work was ultimately the best fit for sonic 2.

Understandable you didn't like it, given the quote. This is an aggregate of existing interviews and information found on the web. It just happened that most of the stuff found on it was one sided. Wasn't intended to slide you in anyway and it isn't really journalism at all and isn't intended to be.
