These older games had to calculate bits on integer value which often maxed out at around 256. Even if you jumped over the flag in Mario you could eventually reach the visual glitch area, usually timer will run out and Mario would die first, but that is an example like why Link can only hold 255 rupees in Legend of Zelda NES.

For those wondering: Sonic 2 added the spindash, Super forms, and 7 Chaos Emeralds. Sonic 1 did not have that. Still, remaning in the code is a Super Sonic flag, probably meaning Sonic was meant to go Super, but didn't for the final. There is no code for the Spindash&7th Chaos Emeralds.

Fun fact: you die when there's a bunch of enemies or rings on screen because the game is being overloaded and it needs to reset, and in order to do that it kills Sonic.

I hadn't realized before, but this hack made me appreciate how many onscreen objects this game can handle. Perhaps Sonic losing so many rings when hit was an intentional flex of the Sega console's capabilities?

Imagine how horrified Sonic was when he realized Eggman's technology had advanced so much that he now had the ability to program his Robotnik's with the ability to infinitely duplicate themselves upon contact.

I think what happened is your rings overflowed to 0. A single byte can only hold values from 0-255, so if you had 246 and hit two boxes, you'd end up with 246+20=256, which gets written as 0. Dunno why you would die because of that though, usually you need to have 0 rings AND hit an enemy (or fall, or run out of time, but those don't apply here).

The reason why some things disappear is because the SEGA Genesis/Megadrive could only display 80 sprites on screen (20 per scanline).

I was never able to beat this game without game genie codes as a kid as the water level was too hard for me. Just a few years ago was the first time I ever beat Sonic 1 haha. I'm glad that I can at least kick my kid counterpart's ass at gaming!
